Marshall McLuhan was born in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada), and studied at the Manitoba and Cambridge universities, obtaining at the latter a Ph.D. in English literature. McLuhan taught at the universities of Wisconsin and Saint Louis, at Assumption University and at Saint Michael's College of Toronto University, where he directed the Centre for Culture and Technology. This Centre does research on the psychic and social consequences of the technological media. Its current director is Derrick DeKerckhove. To honor McLuhan, the centre is currently called The McLuhan Programme in Culture and Technology. Some of McLuhan's best-known
concepts and aphorisms:
The medium is the message. The content of any medium
is always another medium. The world is
a global village. We look at the present through
a rearview mirror. And we go towards
the future

Marshall McLuhan
Marshall McLuhan, once referred to as the "Oracle of the Electronic Age", is perhaps best known for his phrase turned into book title, The Medium is the Massage [FYI: 'Massage' is not misspelled.]. As director of the Center for Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto, McLuhan rose to fame as a "guru" of media culture. According to Rogers (1994) although McLuhan served on the faculty at Toronto with Harold Innis , and acknowledged Innis's contribution to his theory, the two had little direct contact (p. 488). According to Christians (1989), McLuhan replaced "Innis' more somber historical and sociological themes" with a psychological and doxological approach (p. 238). McLuhan's contribution to the field of communication study was widely acclaimed by popular standards while simultaneously being dismissed by those in academic circles. According to Rogers, "During his lifetime McLuhan did more than any other individual to interest the general public in communication study" (p. 489). Gary Wolf, writing in

http://www.mcluhan.utoronto.ca/marshal.htm
About Marshall McLuhan Marshall McLuhan Key Dates in the Life of Marshall McLuhan On Reading McLuhan Toronto School of Communication Marshall McLuhan by Mark Federman Novelist Tom Wolfe said that he sounded like, “the most important thinker since Newton, Darwin, Freud, Einstein, and Pavlov … the oracle of modern times.” Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau offered, “I think that some of his intuitions were those of a genius.” His turns of phrase and aphorisms — most importantly, “The medium is the message,” and “global village” — are embedded deeply within the psyche of Western culture. And yet this intellectual giant, who informed our society of the effects of television, the nature of advertising, and, over forty years ago, predicted the changes we have seen with the Internet came from humble beginnings. McLuhan loved the academic life at Cambridge, becoming a keen member of its rowing team. An oar, awarded to McLuhan from a winning competition, was a favourite memento that adorned the wall of the main seminar room at his Centre for Culture and Technology years later. At Cambridge, McLuhan indulged his deep interest in G.K. Chesterton that began when friend Tom Easterbrook gave him the book

Who was Marshall McLuhan? last known address: Marshall McLuhan 3 Wychwood Park Toronto, Canada
In a paragraph
Herbert Marshall McLuhan was a visionary educator of mass media. "The medium is the message", perhaps his most often quoted phrase, was one of many of his many advanced perceptions. In media, he studied both their overriding effects on society and their character as extensions of the senses of the individual.
On a kiosk
Who was Marshall McLuhan was produced for a touch sensitive kiosk with the help of Apple Computer. It appeared in the lobby for a performance of The Medium . The kiosk also traveled to Siggraph 1995 in Los Angeles in the lobby for the ACM exhibit and before the Blue Man Group performance.
On a CD-ROM
Understanding McLuhan - CD-ROM made by Southam in Canada. Voyager's New CD is pretty good. It has the full text of Understanding Media and the entire Fordham lecture among many other interesting pieces. My only quibble is that when I want just want to "SEARCH" for subjects and quotes and they have embalmed rather than serviced the literature. The interface gets in the way of the facing.

McLuhan
Signs abound indicating that Marshall McLuhan lives again in the 21st Century, as the media and cultural transformations that he diagnosed continue to unfold. Lewis Lapham writes that McLuhan makes more sense now than ever in his introduction to the republished Understanding Media. TV and radio shows mention McLuhan. Plays are written, and performed in San Francisco and Ottawa. In Toronto, the McLuhan family prevents a Jason Sherman play from being performed, as it takes liberties with McLuhan's persona. A CD-ROM appears in the 1990s, and many now have trouble running it, thus showing the obsolescence of the once new medium, while brilliantly showing how his ideas hold up in new media formats. The Economist and other magazines that once disdained Canada's intellectual comet now routinely refer to McLuhan in discussions of the meaning of new media. McLuhan as intellectual and pop icon has survived the millenium, and become part of the invisible background to our thought. A computer-weaned generation turns to McLuhan as it explores the invention and habitation of new media environments. An interdiscipline emerges, called Media Ecology, deeply inspired by McLuhan, Innis and their heirs including the late Neil Postman. Baby boomers watch in amazement as the once revolutionary impacts of television collide with the subversive effects of inter-networked digital media. The Oxford English Dictionary listed 346 references to McLuhan in 1997. His phrases now turn up constantly, and in surprising places. Take for example the U.S. federal court decision to overturn the Communications Decency Act: "Any content-based regulation of the Internet, no matter how benign the purpose, could burn the global village to roast the pig."
