21. The Evil Stepmother
An essay by maureen F. mchugh on her experience with her step son.
http://my.en.com/~mcq/stepmother.html
The Evil Stepmother My nine-year-old stepson Adam and I were coming home from Kung Fu. "Maureen," Adam saidhe calls me 'Maureen' because he was seven when Bob and I got married and that was what he had called me before. "Maureen," Adam said, "are we going to have a Christmas tree?"
"Yeah," I said, "of course." After thinking a moment. "Adam, why didn't you think we were going to have a Christmas tree?"
"Because of the new house," he said, rather matter-of-fact. "I thought you might not let us."
It is strange to find that you have become the kind of person who might ban Christmas Trees.
We joke about me being the evil stepmother. In fact, the joke is that I am the Nazi Evil Stepmother From Hell. It dispels tension to say it out loud. Actually, Adam and I do pretty good together. But the truth is that all stepmothers are evil. It is the nature of the relationship. It is, as far as I can tell, an unavoidable fact of step relationships.
We enter into all major relationships with no real clue of where we are going; marriage, birth, friendship. We carry maps we believe are true; our parent's relationship, what it says in the baby book, the landscape of our own childhood. These maps are approximate at best, dangerously misleading at worst.
Dysfunctional families breed dysfunctional families. Abuse is handed down from generation to generation. That it's all the stuff of 12 Step programs and talk shows doesn't make it any less true or any less profound.

Interview: Maureen F. McHugh
By Pat Stansberry
M aureen F. McHugh often delves into the world of the outsider, from society, from politics, even gender. She has published four novels and numerous short stories. Her first novel, China Mountain Zhang won the James Tiptree Award, the Locus Best First Novel Award, and a Lambda Award, and was nominated for a Hugo and a Nebula. "The Lincoln Train" won a Hugo for best short story in 1996. Her latest novel, Nekropolis will be published in trade paperback in Nov. 2002. The New York Times Book Review observes that "McHugh writes science fiction from the inside out, with the focus on character." Karen Joy Fowler writes, "I know of no writer who is more deft, more dazzling, or more dangerous to read. You pick up one of Maureen McHugh's books and whole days pass before you remember to put it down again." She has been compared to Ursula K. Le Guin. This discussion took place at Café Tandoor in Cleveland, in the torpid afterglow of Jhinga Biryani, lightly spiced rice and shrimp, Baigan Bharta, rich and pungent roasted eggplant, Palak Raita, a spinach and yogurt condiment that cools the palate, and the wondrous Indian bread naan. "Food is the center of my existence," says McHugh. Pat Stansberry: When writers talk about writing, it's fun to start with our embarrassing youths. Do you remember your earliest speculative fiction story?

In a future Morocco, slavery is legal, an institution deeply ingrained into the fiber of society. Slaves are jessed, given mind-altering drugs that make them loyal and eager to please their master. Hariba, born into poverty in the NEKROPOLIS, actually lived with her family in adjoining crypts until her brother was caught in the sin of adultery. He was flogged and sentenced to thirteen years in prison. Hariba fearing any deep emotion sold herself into slavery and was jessed to her new master Mbarek. She becomes a housekeeper in his home where she meets the biological construct Akhmim. Despite herself, and knowing any relationship between them is illegal, she falls for him. When she is resold, she runs away from her new masters, taking Akhmim with her. Unless they can find a way to be smuggled into a country where slavery is illegal, even for Chimeras like Akhmim, the two risk capture and death at the hands of the authorities. Maureen F. McHugh has written a literary science fiction novel that will be enjoyed by fans of Ursula LeGuin. The story line is riveting, but what makes this work so very special is the way slavery is accepted by both slave and master alike. The subcultures of the biological constructs raise interesting social and ethical issues, especially what constitutes humanity. This is a novel that makes readers think and ponder their own values system. Ms. McHugh is going to be a giant in the science fiction genre.

Nekropolis , Maureen F. McHugh, Eos, 2001, 257 pp. Nekropolis is a stunning work, a massively ambitious novel that fulfills all of its promise. Paradoxically, in this book McHugh’s writing is pared down, cut down to essentials of purest prose and character. It’s also a relatively short work. By some alchemy that very few can reproduce, McHugh takes simple elements and constructs something rich and strange out of them. The book exists in the reader’s mind after reading the last page, kind of like an artifact of exquisite beauty, carved and perfect and glowing. As I said, each sentence itself seems as plain as could be, but taken together the writing is astounding, smooth and flowing and seductive. I’ll quote the first paragraph of the book to give a feel for how swiftly and silkily McHugh brings us into the story: How I came to be jessed. Well, like most people who are jessed, I was sold. I was twenty-one, and I was sold three times in one day, one right after another; first to a dealer who looked at my teeth and in my ears and had me scanned for augmentation; then to a second dealer where I sat in the back office drinking tea and talking with a gap-toothed boy who was supposed to be sold to a restaurant owner as a clerk; and finally that afternoon to the restaurant. The restaurant owner couldn’t really have wanted the boy anyway, since the position was for his wife’s side of the house. (1) The “I” of this first passage is Hariba.

    McHugh, Maureen F.: Nekropolis
Eos : USA, 09/01. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed first edition with a letter from the publisher. There is life in the Nekropolis but no future. Hariba spent her youth here, among the exquisite paper flower wreaths her mother meticulously constructed, playing contentedly with other children around the rows and rows of old buildings housing the crumbling bones of the dead. But when an older brother's criminal indiscretion robbed Hariba of any possibility of a husband, she agreed to have herself "jessed" submitting to the technoblological process designed to render her docile and subservient to whomever has purchased her service. In this way, Hariba could escape the confinement of her surroundings and hopelessness of her fate...though she could never again be truly free. (Inventory #biblio2)
