A bravura belle-lettristic performance that could have existed in no other medium, Windsound Windsound written all over it. Let me add, as a final note, my conviction that even the flashiest technical motion remains artistically static unless it bespeaks significant emotion. Instrumentally as promising as elegiac, Windsound is able to do just that. Eloquently it announces the fact, within a larger and unfolding human story, that letters really matter. Heather McHugh
Ghoti
The gh comes from rough, the o from women's,
and the ti from unmentionables presto:
there's the perfect English instance of
unlovablility complete with fish. Our wish was for a better
revelation: for a correspondence
if not lexical, at least
phonetic; if not with Madonna then at least with Mary Magdalene.
Instead we get the sheer
opacity of things: an accident
of incident, a tracery of history: the dung inside the dungarees, the jock strap for a codpiece, and
the ruined patches bordering the lip. One boot (high-heeled) could make Sorrento sorry, Capri corny, even little Italy a little ill. Low-cased, a lover looks one over eggs without ease, semen without oars and there, on board, tricked out in fur and fin, the landlubber who wound up captain. Where's it going, this our (H)MS? More west? More forth? The quest itself is at a long and short behest: it's wound in winds. (Take rough from seas, and women from the shore, unmentionables out of mind). We're here for something rich, beyond appearances. What do I mean? (What can one say?)

VOL.20 NO.36 BOOKS : MAKING GESTURES
Meeting Michener Center Poet Heather McHugh in False Time
Making Gestures
BY LISSA RICHARDSON
May 4, 2001:

When I approached poet Heather McHugh for an interview, I had to leap into the future of electronic interaction. She said she was too busy to meet face-to-face, but if I e-mailed her my questions, she'd be happy to answer them. This threatened my tried-and-true methods of reporting. No phone pressed to my ear for an hour as I scribbled answers on a notepad? No recorder on a coffee-stained table top in a South Austin dive? How would I respond to her answers? How would I interact with her responses and know what to ask to get to the bottom of things? The bottom of what? The bottom of being an immensely successful poet, one who has a career spanning almost 25 years, one who has written a dozen books of poetry, essays, and translations, and one who has been a Visiting Writer at UT's Michener Center this spring. Could she be shy? I wondered. I only know her through her poems, which are bold, sometimes even brash, but the written word can be a way for shy people to write things they won't say out loud. I agreed to the e-mail interview, but with this conventional format: We had to sit at our keyboards and send e-mails to each other in a mimicry of real-time conversation. I kept in the back of my mind that, if the interview was too contrived or somehow unsuccessful, I could ransack her by telephone later. McHugh is not shy, I learned. Nor were her e-mail answers contrived. Nor did my requested format mimic a real conversation. We responded in counterpoint, in some limping forward motion where I read her answers and shot new questions which, on her end, must have seemed generated from an illogical mind. I think one of my questions went altogether unanswered. I think she thought I asked something that I didn't.

Eyeshot: Poems
by Heather McHugh Wesleyan University Press, 54 pp., $20 No matter how far you get from that introductory poetry workshop, you never quite forget the daunting, mysterious warning that goes something like this: "In poetry, every word must count." Reading Heather McHugh's new collection, Eyeshot , you realize that not only does every word count, but many of them in two or three directions at once. Language and an intelligent wit are at the foreground of these poems, which unabashedly embrace wordplay and rhythms you can really feel. They rollick through topics that span all the major concerns love, politics, God, death through the filter of minute sensory perceptions, largely visual and keep rollicking right on through the end. The final poem, "The Looker," is told from the perspective of a woman recently dead, still witnessing the living: "I was a looker at last, head back, mouth wide/as in a heat or holler. (I had always looked/my best astonished.)" There is a "you" addressee (whom we take to be a loved one she had outlived), who appears in the first line of the poem and returns again only in the last line, to give us a sock in the gut: "Given the almost-clear, the near-/unclouded glass, I did what you/weren't there to do./I took my breath away." This is a sort of poignancy possible only through the striking together of profound sadness with tough humor. The result: a spark of humanity like no other.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Poet Heather McHugh to Read at Smith
NORTHAMPTON, Mass.-The Poetry Center at Smith College will present poet Heather McHugh at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Wright Hall Auditorium.
McHugh is the author of six books of poetry, a book of essays and translations from several languages. Called a "postmodern metaphysician" by Booklist, McHugh is widely praised for her attention to, and fascination with, language itself. Her poems, which have won many awards, often revolve around complicated wordplay and etymological games. Former U. S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass described her as "a poet for whom wit is a form of spiritual survival." The Village Voice Literary Supplement declared that McHugh's poems "are honest and essential as a blood count."
Born in California and raised in Virginia, McHugh entered Harvard at the age
