The Poetry of William McGonagall William McGonagall lived from 1830 to 1902. He considered himself to be of the calibre of Burns, and sadly no-one ever put him straight on this matter. Quite the contrary - he received letters from Scotsmen the world over lauding his work. I find it difficult to believe that so many can have had such poor taste, and can only assume that they were taking the mick!! Am I wrong? To help you decide I reproduce below one of his finest (!!) pieces, and if like me you have trouble reading through the tears of laughter by the time you reach the end, then I rest my case. If more evidence is required I am happy to provide it. THE MIRACULOUS ESCAPE OF ROBERT ALLAN, THE FIREMAN
'Twas in the year of l858, and on October the fourteenth day, That a fire broke out in a warehouse, and for hours blazed away; Situated in Buchanan Street, in the City of Glasgow.
The flames burst forth about three o'clock in the afternoon, And intimation of the outbreak spread very soon; And in the spectators' faces were depicted fear and consternation; While the news flew like lightning to the Fire Brigade Station.

In Honourandum of William McGonagall 1830-1902
by Sean O´Donoghue Hayes
Oh forsooth,
U'll be so uncouth,
not to know grand McGonagall,
the greatest poet of them all! He was a scholar of little regard,
who did not let his discourse retard,
spake on things of the everyday,
and gave the common man poetic say. The glory of his words enshrined,
are the fact by structure or rhyme not undermined,
he sought only to express himself to all,
the rich, the poor, short or tall. It was Spike Milligan who re-dug him up,
and brought him to us who on such things sup, allow the world to again express amazement, at McGonagall's word enslavement. That Tay bridge disaster of which he reports did so happen, and his poem follows the official report almost exacten, oft this tee-totalling poet would perform to the Scottish lad and lass, to make of more amusement they would alcoholically lace his drinking glass. No, forsooth do not cast a stone at fair Will McGonagall, he did not allow pure lack of talent to block him at all

Blake: A Lament, in the style of William McGonagall, Poet and Tragedian
By Chris Blenkarn
'Twas in the Autumn of the year in the fourth series of Blake's Seven
The crew of the Scorpio did resolve to leave their base at Xenon
To run away with dignity, bound for Gauda Prime
To find Roj Blake, whom they had not seen for a very long time.
O hideous Gauda Prime! Thy dreaded name fills all men with fear and dread
For it is a place where vile bounty hunters kill true rebels dead.
Across the vast and raging galaxy the ship fled on and on
The crew's hearts still were true and stalwart, and not at all woebegone.
Blake sat on the forest greensward, the trees arched high o'erhead
His hair was gray, his eye was wild, his heart grown hard, 'tis said.
Upon a fire the grim-faced leader was roasting animals sundry When a rebel bold called Arlen assayed him, for she was very hungry. Three bounty hunters came through the trees, Arlen for to slaughter She killed two, but the third shot her in the leg when he fought her. As she lay desp'rate wounded, Blake slew the man in the fray

McGonagall Night 2002
www.VORD.net William Topaz McGonagall was the greatest of all Scottish poets and passed away in September 1902. We had a party to celebrate his great works. As always the little pics get bigger in a click. The guests arrive..... John turns up on his brand new Aprilia fitted with more trick bits than you could shake a titanium exhaust at. ....... And are immediately put to work chopping wood..... John and Robert doing their synchronised wood breaking thing. .....into smaller and smaller pieces. It should be noted here that Robert and John are both highly trained in the ancient Japanese art of breaking wood with sledgehammer. On no account should you try this at home. The farmer spots the bonfire being built and quickly ploughs a fire break in the stubble. Maybe he doesn't trust us. The furnace is up to temperature.... ....and Carlo, Gary and John re-shape a molten glass bottle. "I've gone slightly mad" says Ralph. Renate seems to be coping with this strange group of people very well..... .... but Gary isn't coping quite so well with someone...... .....Carlo always copes well. Even while sleeping he maintains that firm-but-fair manner. In the morning: Looks like that wood chopping has taken it's toll on John and Robert. Or was it the beer?
