Poetry The Hero of Kalapore: An incident of the Indian Mutiny The 27th Regiment has mutinied at Kalapore:
That was the substance of a telegram, which caused a great uproar
At Sattara, on the evening of the 8th of July,
And when the British officers heard it, they heaved a bitter sigh. 'Twas in the year of 1857,
Which will long be remembered: Oh! Heaven!
That the Sepoys revolted, and killed their British officers and their wives;
Besides, they killed their innocent children, not sparing one of their lives. There was one man there who was void of fear,
He was the brave Lieutenant William Alexander Kerr;
And to face the rebels boldly it was his intent,
And he assured his brother officers his men were true to the Government. And now that the danger was so near at hand,
He was ready to put his men to the test, and them command; And march to the rescue of his countrymen at Kalapore, And try to quell the mutiny and barbarous uproar. And in half an hour he was ready to start, With fifty brave horsemen, fearless and smart; And undaunted Kerr and his horsemen rode on without dismay

A handloom weaver by trade he is world renowned for his disjointed poetry that simply doesn't scan. Whether he was an ingenious buffoon or a shrewd entertainer (McGonagall extracted fees of between 5 and 10/- (50p) from the crowds who gleefully attended his public humiliations) is open to debate. Whatever the case, one cannot fail to admire McGonagall's eternal optimism-this is the man who walked from Dundee to Balmoral to present a volume of his treasured verse to his beloved Queen Victoria only to be told at the gates of the castle to go away. Tezcatlipoca I've recently been reading a little of William McGonagall , a chap Spike Milligan called "his favourite poet". McGonagall was quite possibly the worst poet to have ever lived, so I'm starting this thread through a sadist desire to inflict him on the rest of you. Enjoy. Unencumbered Incidentally, IIRC, the Book of Heroic Failures listed McGonagall as the least successful Macbeth. Essentially, he was enjoying himself so much that he refused to die during the big fight at the end. You have to admire the man. Stoatie (Male Student No. 23)

by William McGonnagal of Dundee.
BEAUTIFUL MONIKIE! with your trees and shrubberies green
And your beautiful walks, most charming to be seen:
'Tis a beautiful place for pleasure-seekers to resort,
Because there they can have innocent sport,
taking a leisure walk all round about,
And see the anglers fishing in the pond for trout. Besides, there's lovely white swans swimming on the pond,
And Panmure Monument can be seen a little distance beyond;
And the scenery all round is enchanting I declare,
While sweet-scented fragrance fills the air. Then away, pleasure-seekers of bonnie Dundee,
And have a day's outing around Monikie, And inhale the pure air, on a fine summer day, Which will help to drive dull care away; As ye gaze on the beautiful scenery there, Your spirits will feel o'erjoyed and free frozen care. Then near to the pond there's a beautiful green sward

Although new bad poems are being written by the hundreds every day (many of them in university creative writing classes), most bad poetry is simply weak and ineffectual and lacking in interest and (fortunately) is soon forgotten. To achieve memorable badness is not so easy. It has to be done innocently, by a poet unaware of his or her defects. The right combination of lofty ambition, humorless self-confidence, and crass incompetence is rare and precious. (There is a famous anthology of bad poetry called The Stuffed Owl, which I recommend to those interested.) Seamus Cooney, W. Michigan U. William Topaz McGonagall
Dundee's most famous poet came up in conversation at work today. I am sure no-one can fail to be moved by the words of this immortal bard. Here's what he has to say about Shakespeare , for instance: In his beautiful play "As You Like It", one passage is very fine. Just for instance in the forest of Arden, the language is sublime where Orlando speaks of his Rosilind, most lovely and divine; and no other poet I am sure has written anything more fine. TrackBack

http://pulinapoksi.undonet.com/wtmcgonagall.htm
Web Site Hosting fre e web hosting ... Reseller Hosting William Topaz McGonagall (1825?-1902): He is Dundee's best remembered nobody. He was a man without talent who thought he was a great poet and tragedian and only needed an opportunity to prove it. This made him the perfect target for practical jokers who abounded in his day. He was engaged to give entertainments in small halls just so his audience could make a goat of him. His teetotal drink was spiked with alcohol. McGonagall had passed middle life before he got the idea he had been visited by the muse. He was born in *Edinburgh in 1825 and grew up in Dundee, to which his father moved in search of work. William also laboured long hours in the weaving trade. All his life he was the butt of cruel jokes, but his faith in himself could not be shaken. His remains were dropped into a paupers' grave nearly a hundred years ago, but his memory holds up. All his poems have been published and so are there to be judged: they have, if nothing else, the quality of inimitability. *Recent research and family lore suggest that William's claim to be born in this city may not be correct. His father, in an early census entered William's place of birth as Ireland. Possibly Donegal according to surviving family members.
