    Notes on Life and Works
Born in about 1830 in Edinburgh of Irish parents, William McGonagall earned his living as a hand-loom weaver. He married Jean King on July 11, 1846. He heard, and obeyed, a call to write poetry in June 1877 and brought out a collection the next year, including a poem on the great Tay bridge in Dundee. An actor in Shakespeare plays performed locally, and a bard whom many held in contempt, McGonagall lived variously in Dundee, Perth, and Edinburgh. He travelled to London and New York, though very poor. In 1890 two volumes of his collected poems came out, many previously issued as broadsides or in newspapers. The King of Burma honoured him with the title of Sir William Topaz McGonagall, Knight of the White Elephant of Burmah. He died on September 29, 1902, at 5 South College Street, Edinburgh.

    The Battle of Omdurman
Ye Sons of Great Britain! come join with me And sing in praise of the gallant British Armie, That behaved right manfully in the Soudan, At the great battle of Omdurman.
'Twas in the year of 1898, and on the 2nd of September, Which the Khalifa and his surviving followers will long remember, Because Sir Herbert Kitchener has annihilated them outright, By the British troops and Soudanese in the Omdurman fight.
The Sirdar and his Army left the camp in grand array, And marched on to Omdurman without delay, Just as the brigades had reached the crest adjoining the Nile, And became engaged with the enemy in military style.
The Dervishes had re-formed under cover of a rocky eminence, Which to them, no doubt, was a strong defence, And they were massed together in battle array Around the black standard of the Khalifa, which made a grand display.
    But General Maxwell's Soudanese brigade seized the eminence in a short time, And General Macdonald's brigade then joined the firing line;

    http://scotlandvacations.com/mcgonagall.htm
William McGonagall William McGonagall is Dundee's best remembered nobody. He was a man without talent who thought he was a great poet and tragedian and only needed an opportunity to prove it. This made him the perfect target for practical jokers who abounded in his day. He was engaged to give entertainments in small halls just so his audience could make a goat of him. His teetotal drink was spiked with alcohol. McGonagall had passed middle life before he got the idea he had been visited by the muse. He was born in Edinburgh in 1825 and grew up in Dundee, to which his father moved in search of work. William also laboured long hours in the weaving trade. All his life he was the butt of cruel jokes, but his faith in himself could not be shaken. His remains were dropped into a paupers' grave nearly a hundred years ago, but his memory holds up. All his poems have been published and so are there to be judged: they have, if nothing else, the quality of inimitability. Until earlier this year his name and portrait flourished over a public house in one of Dundee's main roads and a McGonagall Society endures.

Full review William McGonagall is one of the 19th century's true life tragic romantic heroes - especially so because he was blissfully unaware of the fact! His reputation has without doubt been tarnished by the literary prejudices of the age, where snobbery was rife, and discrimination against the Irish community within Scotland was commonplace. I won't seek to provide a 'beginner's guide' in this opinion, other people have provided this far more eloquently than I ever will, instead I will try to explain why I feel he is worthy of serious study in spite of his limitations. Although born and died in Edinburgh, he was best known within his adopted city of Dundee. He was a hand-loom weaver by trade, and was largely self taught. In his middle age, when doubtless his employment prospects became limited by increasing mechanisation and de-skilling, he turned to poetry to keep himself and his family from the workhouse.

Pictures taken by Nick Nicholas, August 1995 Beautiful city of Glasgow , with your streets so neat and clean
Your stately mansions, and beautiful Green
Likewise your beautiful bridges across the river Clyde
And on your bonnie banks I would like to reside. Chorus
Then away to the West - to the beautiful West!
To the fair city of Glasgow that I like the best,
Where the river Clyde rolls on to the sea,
And the lark and the blackbird whistle with glee
'Tis beautiful to see ships passing to and fro,
Laden with goods for the high and the low,
So let the beautiful city of Glasgow flourish
And may the inhabitants always find food their bodies to nourish Chorus The statue of the prince of Orange is very grand, Looking terror to the foe, with a truncheon in his hand And well mounted on a noble steed, which stands in Trongate And holding up its foreleg , I'm sure it looks first-rate. Chorus Then there's the Duke of Wellington's statue in Royal Exchange Square - It is a beautiful statue I without fear declare, Besides inspiring and most magnificent to view Because he made the French fly at the battle of Waterloo.

    The Tay Bridge Disaster
by William Topaz McGonagall At 7.15pm on 28th December 1879, The Tay Bridge was blown down while a passenger train heading north from Edinburgh and Fife was attempting to cross. There were no survivors. Only 46 bodies were ever recovered. However, the train was pulled from the River Tay and went on to continue in service until 1902. The Tay Bridge Disaster is McGonagall's best known poem. He once asserted that "it was the only poem that made me famous universally". His tragic account of The Tay Bridge Disaster has become the definitive McGonagall poem and is often thought to mirror his own career. Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay!

Famous Scots - William McGonagall (1830-1902)
Despite his reputation as the "world's worst poet" McGonagall's poems are nowadays read, quoted and enjoyed more than ever, although perhaps because they offer more amusement than insight. McGonagall's parents came from Ireland but they moved to Scotland where McGonagall was born in Edinburgh in 1830, or thereabouts (some sources give 1825). McGonagall's father was a hand-loom weaver and the family moved to Paisley, then Glasgow, before settling in Dundee. Due to lack of money, William's education lasted only eighteen months but that was enough to start him onto reading and then writing. Although he trained as a hand-loom weaver like his father he, had a brief career on the stage - as Macbeth. But, as McGonagall himself said, "The most startling incident in my life was the time I discovered myself to be a poet, which was in the year 1877." He became a well-known public figure and toured Scotland giving performances of his poetry and selling copies of his poems. The fact that his audience was more amused than impressed did not seem to perturb him. He had a brief and disappointing trip to New York in 1877 but a selection of his poems were published under the title "Poetic Gems" in 1890. His self-belief in his own brilliance as a poet was unshakeable and an unsuccessful attempt to drop in to see Queen Victoria at Balmoral left him "not in the least discouraged." He still wrote "An Ode to the Queen in her Jubilee Year." MacGonagall's poems on the "Famous Tay Whale" and the "Tay Bridge Disaster" are perhaps his most famous but he also produced a great many other poems about the people, places and events of his day. His wayward rhymes, mixed scansion and choice of subject matter perhaps justify his title of worst poet of the world. And yet he is held in great affection and a memorial plaque was erected to his memory in Greyfriar's Churchyard in Edinburgh in 1999. He would have enjoyed writing a poem about that...

Home MP3's Today's Joke SHOP ... Guy Aldred William McGonagall Poet - 1825-1902 "Mac Gonagall, Mac Gonagall, the worst of writers, of them all. He's known tae pen a poem or two, and through so doing gather, a fame that gets the purists goin', in somethin' o' a lather." William McGonagall was born in Edinburgh but brought up in Orkney until his family moved to Dundee when he was 11. This was his true, spiritual home and no mistake. The City that would ultimately spawn such literary classics as "The Beano", "The Dandy", "The People's Friend" and last but by no means least "The Sunday Post", is a somewhat fitting scenario for a genius such as McGonagall's. He has the somewhat dubious claim to fame of being the worst poet that Scotland, or indeed the world, has ever produced. When one examines his work, it's easy to see why. But damn, he's so bad, he's superb. We think he's an utter Superstar.

Full review (Plenty of different editions of McGonagall on amazon, all at very modest prices). I sometimes wonder how many billions of unpublished writings are floating about in Manuscript Heaven. It’s so easy to write poorly, to have your work rejected, and even easier never actually to get around to submitting something. I’ve had my share of rejection slips, and binned a lot of stuff I knew was poor. But imagine this : your writing is so very bad, so totally appalling, so ludicrous, banal and demented, that it makes you famous. It’s a fate which befalls very few, but one who was destined for fame because of the vast quantities of mind-numbing tripe he produced was William McGonagall. McG was born in 1825 in Dundee. He went to work as a weaver, and conceived a passion for the tragedies of Shakespeare. Convinced he was a great actor, he committed to memory great chunks of his favourite parts : Macbeth, Richard III, Hamlet and Othello, and would recite these to entertain his fellow workers. The din in Victorian mills was intense, so it’s possible that his efforts went mercifully unnoticed. Encouraged by persons malicious, he began to appear regularly on the amateur stage, where he was rapturously received. What McG never realised was that all the applause was mad glee at his absolute lack of any talent whatsoever. But worse was to come.

    William Topaz McGonagall
William Topaz McGonagall September 29 ) was a weaver, poet, and actor. Born in Edinburgh , of Irish parentage, he was working as handloom weaver in Dundee when an event occurred that was to change his life. As he was later to write:
The most startling incident in my life was the time I discovered myself to be a poet, which was in the year
McGonagall has been widely acclaimed as the worst poet in British history. The chief criticisms of his poetry are that he is deaf to poetic metaphor and unable to scan correctly. Of the 200 or so poems that he wrote, the most famous is probably The Tay Bridge Disaster , which recounts the events of the evening of 28 December , when, during a severe gale , the Tay Rail Bridge near Dundee collapsed as a train was passing over it.
Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay! Alas! I am very sorry to say That ninety lives have been taken away On the last Sabbath day of 1879, Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

The poetry of William McGonagall If Rudyard Kipling was the most notable British poet of the end of the Nineteenth Century, then William McGonagall must rate somewhere close behind him. Regarded by some - especially himself - as being an unrecognised genius, as well as Scotland's foremost poet, McGonagall wrote verse to celebrate every major event of his day, including Britain's colonial adventures. He has been described as being: 'A real genius, for he is the only truly memorable bad poet in our language.' The following collection of his military verse had been selected to inspire and entertain all those who hanker after a different, Victorian view of the world. I urge you read them and enjoy them, because they are, without doubt, some of the worst poetry you will ever see on the printed page.
