John D. MacDonald
"The only thing in the world worth a damn is the strange, touching,
pathetic, awesome nobility of the individual human spirit." Attended the University of Pennsylvania 1934-35 but took his BS from Syracuse University in 1938. The next year MacDonald acquired an MBA from Harvard University. The approach of WWII seeming obvious, John enlisted in the US Army in 1940 and served until 1946. He was stationed primarily in Asia working out of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) where he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel.
MacDonald was a mainstream writer who spread himself around, making more of a splash in the special genre of mystery writing than in science fiction. His short work in SF was mainly written in the 1948-53 time span with his first SF novel, Wine of the Dreamers , appearing in 1951. MacDonald's 1962 novel

Do You Believe Muslims Now? Dick McDonald Do you really believe that Islam is a peaceful religion? That the fact that 1.3 billion of them hate America doesn't bother you? Their deafening silence for almost three years since 9/11 is not a ringing endorsement that they would soon as not wish all us non-Muslims were dead. Well self-interest is an underlying human condition (stop the presses and notify the NYT and the UN) called survival and American Muslims are only humans under the skin. They want to save their own skin, so in light of the news that a new attack by Muslims in the United States is coming, they have started a drive to condemn terrorism. If you read the article closely you will note that some of the sponsoring organizations were the conduits through which the terrorists were funded. This time they are worried that their inaction is that endorsement and they better get cracking or their actions might cause reactions they are not willing to endure. American Muslims and those in the country know who the bad guys are better than we do. Isn't it time for that "peaceful" religion to clean up its own closet. Until they do, they will suffer the "eye for an eye" conflagration only the US Military can deliver. More scarily, they don't want the leftist press to start up on them. To date, the world press has been with them. They can't afford an American defection.

The Color of Truth When a friend recommends Travis McGee as the perfect man to solve a problem, Travis McGee finds himself employed by Mono Yeoman - a woman who is as tough, and as hard, as nails. McGee leaves his Florida houseboat for the Nevada desert, where he expects to to help Mono untangle her estate from the greedy fingers of her estranged husband. But he barly gets his bags unpacked when a sniper does away with his employer. Any fan knows that nothing is more calculated to upset McGee than murdering someone right under his nose. The detective/troubleshooter has very little patience under the best of circumstances and he takes that kind of interference very personally. So client or no, McGee dives in to find the killer. And uncover a complex land and money scheme at the same time. In short order it becomes obvious that nothing is ever as obvious as it first seems and McGee is on his way to a showdown that might bring an unexpectedly swift end to John MacDonald's series. McGee is the classic not-quite-noir hero, mad of the same cloth as Nero Wolfe's Archie. Tough, a dash sarcastic, but basically a defender of the underdog, his solutions to problems combines subtlety and violence in just the right mix. By now generations of mystery lovers have come to see McGee as their man in Lauderdale. A solution up to the toughest challenge. This is one of the earliest McGee's (The Deep Blue Good-by was first) and remains one of the best after nearly 40 years .

    John McDonald: This old drugstore
    By David Cecelski
As published in the May 9, 1999, edition of the
McDonald's Drugstore has been on Ninth Street in Durham for more than 80 years. When I interviewed John McDonald, I asked him how things had changed over all that time. I guess I expected him to lay into the chain stores that have taken over the pharmacy business or to feel uneasy about the new tattoo and body-piercing parlor next door. Instead, he looked around the old pharmacy, with its antique soda fountain and soothing blue bottles of Hunter's Sarspirilla and Cow Balm, and he said, matter of factly: "See that south wall? When I was little, there used to be a booth there."
Not much has changed at McDonald's Drugstore. Six days a week, John and Frances McDonald still greet children with warm smiles and the best milkshakes and vanilla Cokes in town. The dress shop owner next door knows to go behind the counter and help herself, and the walls are adorned with hundreds of school photos, mementos from customers whose families have been coming to McDonald's for generations.
Their drugstore might not carry every gewgaw that you can buy at a shopping mall or chain store. But as I watched a crowd of gleeful children sipping orangeades while an older woman chatted with Mrs. McDonald about her granddaughter's piano recital, I got the feeling that maybe their customers were coming there for things that money can't buy.
