Any publication, personal or commercial use, in any form is PROHIBITED. John McCoy and Nancy Hatfield were married in Wayne County, Kentucky by Justice of the Peace, David Duncan, on February 21, 1828. They lived in Wayne County during the 1830's where the birth of the first five children occurred in or near the town of Monticello: Andrew E., Millie Ann, George W., William Riley, and Francis Marion. The McCoy family relocated to Campbell County, Tennessee where John purchased 128 acres from Joseph Hatfield. In March 1849 John acquired two more tracts of land adjoining his present farm. The first Entry No. 1267 was a parcel containing two hundred acres on Puncheon Camp Creek waters of New River. Tract two, Entry No. 1268, contained one thousand acres on the Montgomery fork waters of New River. Both tracts were filed August 21, 1850 in Nashville, Tennessee, and the combined acreage of the three parcels equaled 1,382 acres which was known as "The John McCoy lands." Their remaining ten children, Elizabeth, Joseph, John L., Martin T., Nancy, Louisa, Ewel W., and Nicholas Patterson were born in

Donn and Nancy Moyer Remember Tim
McCoy and the Carson Barnes Circus Special thanks to Donn and Nancy Moyer, the husband and wife team who have the 'Reptile Safari' and traveled with Colonel Tim McCoy and the Carson Barnes Circus in the late 1950s. You can read more about their unique show at:
http://www.wa.net/~djmoyer/
"Colonel Tim was the feature act on the Carson Barnes Circus owned by the late Jack Moore and his wife Angela, and the show wintered in Hugo, Oklahoma. The year was 1958 and we did not work the entire season on the show as we had been previously booked for part of the season before we joined them. Jack and his wife were very nice to work for and we enjoyed the 'family' feeling that the show had. It seems the Carson Barnes Circus furnished Tim with a new two-door Mercury automobile which was canary yellow. They also provided a Yellowstone trailer about 30 feet long that was the same colour. Scuttlebutt around the show was that the Colonel didn't like to stay in the trailer and just used it for a dressing room. One day as we were heading towards Silome Springs, Arkansas, I looked in the rear view mirror (as we were also pulling a trailer) and saw a yellow streak catch and pass us in a flurry. Of course it was the Colonel and later, when I asked him why he was going so fast on the hilly two lane road, he said that he was trying to get to a radio interview (and had overslept). I can't remember if he made the radio date or not."

Above, Tommy Scott and Colonel Tim McCoy
Doc Tommy Scott and his Wild West Show In some of my Old Corral ramblings, there has been mention of cowboy film stars owning and/or performing with circuses and travelin' shows. "Big Guns" like Tom Mix, Ken Maynard and Tim McCoy owned circuses and had mixed success with those ventures. And lesser cowboy stars, such as Reb Russell, Tom Tyler and Lee 'Lone Ranger' Powell hired on with established circuses. Others, such as Bob Steele, Duncan Renaldo, Tim Holt and Max Terhune, did personal appearances and shows at local fairs, local movie houses, et al. The reason for doing this work was simple - they needed to supplement their income and provide a more consistent paycheck (as the salaries that some of these performers received for doing six or eight B-westerns per year was often meager).
One of the more famous of these "traveling shows" was owned by "Doc" Tommy Scott.
Why should Tommy Scott's show be highlighted in the Old Corral? For about a 20 year period beginning in the mid 1950s, Scott was home to several B western performers: Tim McCoy, Johnny Mack Brown, Sunset Carson, and Al "Fuzzy" St. John. In addition, the Scott show represents an interesting slice of entertainment history. Lastly, the B western film had faded away by the mid 1950s, but Scott, via his show, would highlight the ol' western movie performers for another 20 years, thus extending our memories of these actors and their heroic adventures on the silver screen.

McCoy Family Tree
NOTE: This family tree is taken from a seventh grade class assignment. It is meant to show my immediate family how we are related to one another. We've been McCoy's for a long time and the excitement has worn off. If the webmaster doesn't know you personally, then she doesn't know who your great great grandfather is, and cannot give you any information about how to trace your roots. Unfortunately, Alex Haley has also died, so chances of him helping you find your roots are also slim. Please do not e-mail asking such questions. They will not be answered, only laughed at. What you see here is what you get. William McCoy, progenitor of the McCoys of the Kentucky-West Virginia border area, (family tradition calls him "Old William") was born about 1750-1755. His birthplace is unknown. His wife's name is also unknown. He was the father of thirteen children, ten sons and three daughters. It is thought that the McCoys came from Maryland, and there is evidence that two sons, John and Samuel were born there. Some descendants say that William lived near Cumberland, Maryland, and one descendant was told many years ago by an older McCoy relative that the McCoys once lived where the Antietam battleground now stands. Most census records give Virginia as the birthplace of William's children. For the younger children, this information is, no doubt, true. William lived in Montgomery County, Virginia, and some of his children were probably born there. Several of his older children seem to have married there. Two sons, Ezekiel and Walter, lived in Tazewell County, Virginia, just prior to coming to Kentucky.

Linda Hornbuckle Amazing vocals from Linda swirled with entrancing rhythm. A local favorite. Linda packed the Fourth of July festival this summer and had the Peacock dance floor filled earlier this year. Be prepared for long breaks between sets. - The Regular Guy, October, 2001
Lori's penetrating vocals and the full sound from the Interpreters filled the Peacock as patrons danced and the lead guitar wondered the floor with his remote jack. A blues'ed up version of Silent night highlighted not only the rhythm sections flexibility, but Lori's as well. - The Regular Guy, December, 2001
Martin Fitzpatrick Martin again earned rousing applause from the Big River patrons. Finger picking acoustic perfection with solid base note variation entertained a full house at Big River. Although Martin did not offer vocals, his crisp, clear and bright sound was absorbed by all. - The Regular Guy, December, 2001
Martin's acoustic skill created an atmosphere in Big River that made customers think twice about leaving the lounge when their table was ready. The sound is rich and full of high and low tones each picked with varied intensity and a polished rhythm. - The Regular Guy, November, 2001

To add to her shame, Johnse married her 16 year old first cousin, nancy mccoy.ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE. In August, 1882, three of Rance s sons, Randel, Jr.
    http://www.libby-genealogy.com/hatfield-mccoy.htm
I've encountered several difficulties researching my mother's maternal grandfather. My mother's mother was Norma Fletcher. She married Edgar Preston on December 24, 1918. Norma was only 14 years old. Her parents were Joseph Robert Fletcher & Catherine Scott. Joseph's father was Joseph Robert/Robinson Fletcher. This Joseph was born about 1838 in Pike Co., KY and married Mary "Polly" Preece. Thanks to a fellow Fletcher descendant and researcher, I've found my Joseph's line. Imagine my surprise when I found out his father was John F. Fletcher and his mother was Sarah McCoyof the fame. Sarah was the first cousin of "Ole" Randolph McCoy who's sons killed Ellison Hatfield on a fateful day in 1882. Sarah's father was Joseph McCoy, Randolph's uncle. In doing additional research, I found another of my mother's lines. Her great grandfather was Andy H. Scott, father of Catherine Scott above. Andy's grandmother was Elizabeth McCoy, a sister of Joseph McCoy. Randolph's father, Daniel, as well as Joseph and Elizabeth were children of "Old William". One of the sad elements of this story is that the Hatfield's & The McCoys came to depict the definition of what was known as the "hillbilly". This is where the gun-toting overall wearing hillbilly perception came from. More focus was placed on that than the true tragedy of this story.
