and American "Cultural Ambassador"
As part of the State Department's CultureConnect program, American "Cultural Ambassador," Pulitzer-prize winning author Frank McCourt, visited Israel February 26-29. Mr. McCourt captured the attention and imagination of students, educators, and writers with stories from his "miserable Irish childhood" in Limerick, and his later life as a high school teacher in New York City. At a high school in Jerusalem, he exhorted the school's Israeli Jewish students and a group of Israeli Arab students visiting from a high school in nearby Abu Ghosh to consider the uniqueness of their day-to-day personal experiences. "Each one of you is a potential protagonist of your own story, a star of your own film script," he told them. The program took place a few days after a bus bombing in Jerusalem had claimed the life of a student at the school. Mr. McCourt spoke to the students of loss and pain and urged them to look with fresh eyes at their own lives to turn their often harsh realities into artistic expression.

You've certainly addressed this question in your first book, but to begin with, what was your childhood like? It was rich in the sense that... Even though we were poor, at the lowest level, even below the lowest economic level, we were always excited. It was rich in the sense that we had a lot to look up to, to look forward to, a lot to aspire to, a lot to dream about. But in economic circumstances it was desperate.
It was Calcutta with rain. At least they're warm in Calcutta. video audio But it was desperate because of certain things, ingredients like my father being an alcoholic, my mother having too many babies in too short a time, no work available in Ireland, and even when my father did get a job he drank the wages. Then there was the harsh kind of schooling we had with school masters who ruled with a stick and then because of the overwhelming presence of the church, which imbued us with fear all the time. So it was fear, dampness, poverty, alcoholism, fear of the church, fear of the school masters, fear in general. But at the same time when we got out of school, when we were away from the church, when we were out of the house, we were on the streets and we were always excited. And when you have nothing little things become very precious, like books. There was an occasional book that came into our house and we just devoured it. In that sense it was very rich.

Pulitzer Prize for Biography Inducted into the Academy in 1999 "F. Scott Fitzgerald said there are no second acts in American lives. I think I've proved him wrong. And all because I refused to settle for a one-act existence, the 30 years I taught English in various New York City high schools." Frank McCourt was already retired when he published his first book at age 66. Angela's Ashes, a memoir of his impoverished boyhood in Limerick, Ireland, shot to the top of the best-seller lists and remained there for over a year. Angela's Ashes won McCourt the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Biography. It was still topping the paperback lists when McCourt's second book 'Tis hit the bookstores, and the best-seller lists. "After retiring from teaching I wanted a second act, not a rocker in Florida," McCourt says. After a lifetime of helping young people find their own voices, Frank McCourt has found his own, and millions of readers have found a friend to treasure.

IRISH ASHES
March 17, 1997
TRANSCRIPT Elizabeth Farnsworth speaks with New York writer Frank McCourt about his Irish childhood and his memoir, "Angela’s Ashes." JIM LEHRER: Finally this St. Patrick’s Day one man’s story of growing up in Ireland, and to Elizabeth Farnsworth. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: New York writer Frank McCourt celebrates his Irish childhood in his memoir, "Angela’s Ashes." Writing in first person, present in the voice of the child he was, McCourt leaves the reader laughing and crying, often at the same time, over stories of his family’s terrible poverty in Limerick just before and during World War II. "Worse than your ordinary miserable childhood," he writes, "is the miserable Irish childhood. And worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." McCourt is 66 years old now, and this is his first book. It has won numerous awards and been on the New York Times Bestseller List for 27 weeks. Thank you for being with us, Mr. McCourt. FRANK McCOURT, Author: Thank you, Elizabeth. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: Tell us about Limerick, the lane you lived in, what you had and what you didn’t have there, the house you lived in.

there once was a man from Limerick...an interview with author Frank McCourt
By Jim Saah When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I survived at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood.
from Angela's Ashes Frank McCourt's first book Angela's Ashes: A Memoir is an amazing piece of work. McCourt manages to delve back into his psyche as a small boy and relay the hardships, tragedy and humor of his youth with the insight and innocence only a child could have. Relentless hunger, an alcoholic father and the Catholic Church are constant burdens on him. His story is replete with disease, death and humiliation. But as many Irish seem to thrive on their misery, McCourt manages to deliver an irreverent, humorous tale of his daily struggle to survive and to get back to his birthplace, America. I can't help but think that because Frank McCourt did survive he has a special outlook and appreciation on the way his life turned out. It was a great joy to chat with him through the course of this interview. He was kind, funny and forthcoming. UNo MAS: How do you feel about the way this book is being received?

'Tis a blessing that the author narrates his own work. McCourt follows up his Audie Award-winning performance in Angela's Ashes with another brilliant reading as he chronicles his return to post-World War II New York. Like all good storytellers, McCourt has good stories to tell; 'Tis pulses with grim adversity and quiet triumphscharacter-shaping moments that gain the listener's empathy. What makes McCourt a great storyteller is his ability to give these moments just the right amount of humor and perspective. His lyrical tones are wise but not weary; he's survived life's challenges to tell his tale. And while it may be trite to credit McCourt's verbal skills to his Irish heritage, these war stories were undoubtedly polished amongst friends in the pubs. 'Tis is Grammy material, and a perfect example of how an author's voice can enhance the written word. (Running time: 6 hours, 5 CDs) Rob McDonald
