Synopsis
In a novel that challenges our expectations at every turn, acclaimed author Wil McCarthy sweeps us into the future as only he can imagine it. Here is a thrilling odyssey of discovery and adventure aboard a ship of exiled rebels coming of age in an eternity that may be a lot shorter than anyone ever guessed. Brash and idealistic, they were rebels without a cause in a world governed by science, reason...and immortality. Banished for their troubles to the starship Newhope, they now face a bold future: to settle the worlds of Barnard’s Star. Now King Bascal Edward de Towaji Lutui, former prince of the Queendom of Sol, together with Captain Xiomara “Xmary” Li Weng and her lover, first mate Conrad Mursk, face a perilous voyage with thousands of their fellow exiles. The journey will last a century, but with Queendom technology it’s no problem to step into a fax machine and “print” a fresh, youthful version of yourself. But what this crew of rebels will find is far from the paradise they seek. Before long, their optimistic young colony has started to show signs of strain. And worst of all, death itself has returned with a vengeance. 67% - 3 Review(s) "Far future monarchy is one of the hoariest cliches of science fantasy, but McCarthy does a creditable job in making it believable in a hard SF context among a high-tech society of immortals."

The entire inner solar system has been taken over by a self-replicating organism called mycora in Wil McCarthy's latest novel, Bloom . The mycora eventually bloom and become lethal to humans. This men-made horror, originally named due to its similarity to fungi, has continued to evolve and grow until it reaches the point that humans have been driven from the Earth-Moon system and a few survivors have found refuge in the asteroid belt and on Ganymede. John Strasheim, a shoemaker- cum -reporter has been assigned a mission to dive back into the inner solar system, the Mycosystem, the gauge the current status of Earth's inheritors. McCarthy tells his story through a series of excerpts from Strasheim's published works and realtime views of what Strasheim sees and does. Unfortunately, because Strasheim is a reporter, much of the first hundred pages seems to be Strasheim interviewing his colleagues aboard the starship Louis Pasteur or giving data dumps via his published writing. Wil McCarthy, after ten years of rocket science with Lockheed Martin, traded the hectic limelight of the space program for the peace and quiet (ha!) of commercial robotics at Omnitech, where he works as a research and development hack.
He writes a monthly column for the SciFi Channel's news magazine (www.scifi.com/sfw), and his less truthful writings have appeared in Aboriginal SF, Analog, Interzone, Asimov's Science Fiction, Science Fiction Age , and various anthologies. His novel, Bloom , was selected as a New York Times Notable Book. Further biographical and bibliographic information at: www.sff.net/people/wmccarth

Bloom by Wil McCarthy
(Millennium, £6.99, 310 pages, paperback; published 18 May 2000.) It's good to see nanotech books finally beginning to proliferate on the sf shelves. As someone who read K Eric Drexler's Engines of Creation with unadulterated awe a few years back I've long been waiting for them to appear. There was something of a false start with Greg Bear's Blood Music back in, ooh, donkeys years ago; Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age failed to quite ignite the zeitgeist, and Kathleen Ann Goonan's Queen City Jazz was just too... convoluted (and had too much jazz in it for my liking). This new genre still needs a handy name to pigeonhole it though - "nanopunk" or something. Bloom sounds as though it might be the wide-screen novel nanotech sf needs to kick-start itself. The entire inner solar system has been taken over by a self-replicating nanotech (here referred to as "mycora") bloom that has converted every piece of solid matter 99% of the human race included into more nanotech. The remaining 1% of humanity has escaped to the moons of Jupiter and the more reckless ones the asteroid belt. They've managed to survive there for almost 30 years because the bloom cannot replicate nearly as efficiently in these cold outer wastes. Now, however, things are beginning to change and the first mission is being sent sunwards in a specially prepared ship.

One of the time-honoured SF themes is the exploration of what we might call "edge science": ideas that are current in the scientific world, but far from established, often very speculative, sometimes even close to kooky. This novel is built wholly around such wacky scientific speculations.

The Collapsium
by Wil McCarthy
A book review by Mark L. Olson
Bantam Spectra, 2002, $6.9, 399 pp
I wish I could say that McCarthy's The Collapsium was a fine piece of hard SF. I think the problem here is that McCarthy is writing a super-science story (which means that the story is about a scientist or engineer who builds wonderful gadgets and uses them to do something big) but has gotten the notion into his head that stories need character development, too. Now the epitome of the super-science story is the Arcot, Wade and Morey series of John W. Campbell, Jr. which were published in the 30s. There are three books, The Black Star Passes The Islands of Space , and Invaders from the Infinite By the end of the first book they've intervened in a war on Venus and fought off an interstellar invasion of the Solar System. In the second book, they build a spaceship capable of intergalactic travel and the third book finds them fighting off an invasion of the entire galaxy using weapons which can obliterate stars. Each step is chronicled with plausible scientific jargon and hangs together more than adequately.

This is a bizarre little gem of a novel. I've been aware of Wil McCarthy since I read Bloom a couple of years ago. I remember it being good, but it didn't make a huge impact on me, and I didn't see anything else of his for some time. A short while ago another poster to rec.arts.sf.written described The Collapsium as being like injecting fun into his brain; later that week I saw a paperback and added it to the To-Read pile. So glad I did...
This novel is about the very cutting edge of physics/material science. It's based around the manipulation of exotic states of matter - wellstone is programmable matter, where atoms can be made from any particle, collapsium is composed of miniature black holes held in a matrix and persuaded to behave like giant elementary particles. Sounds like Greg Egan territory right? Dry, emotionless science, interesting in its own way, but maybe not such a good choice for a novel. I mean, this book has appendices. And a glossary. Got to be hard going, surely?
Nope. From the very start you know you're in for a treat. Let's call this "
