McCarthy is able to make complex subjects such as nanotech comprehensible. But he is also the respected author of such novels as Aggressor Six The Collapsium The Wellstone and the upcoming Lost in Transmission (Spectra Books, 2004). He has written the comprehensive nonfiction work Hacking Matter and edited the anthology Once Upon a Galaxy . Review:
David Sanger is a young nanotechnology researcher, off to a conference to give a paper about his latest inventions. But things start to go very wrong: his arch enemy assaults him, and is later found murdered, with David as prime suspect. Then someone trashes his lab and steals all his work. David must race to find the solution before he too ends up dead. We get a good view of a nearish-future world, where technology is omnipresent, and where an over-protective government, influenced by the Gray Party vote, is stifling most peoples' lives, without really solving any social problems (but the politics is a bit too heavy handed). We get lots of nice details of nanotechnology, of how the machines are built, how they work and what they are for. The rivalry between the 'mechanical' and 'biological' approaches is key, with our hero dismissively referring to the exponents of the latter as

Wil McCarthy's novel, The Collapsium , is built wholly around such wacky scientific speculations.

Are you currently writing full time now, or are you fitting in the odd day-job for variety? L ike almost everything these days, that question defies a simple answer. I spend most of my time in an office at home, either writing or dealing with the ghastly minutia that plague one-person businesses. But I'm also the co-owner and Chief Technology Officer of Galileo Shipyards LLC, an aerospace corporation doing balloon research for the U.S. Government, and in addition I'm involved with a software startup called Keystrike. I also do a bit of consulting and public speaking. So yes, I'm a full-time writer, and yes, I work a variety of other jobs on the side. I don't anticipate any changes in the foreseeable future, but I do try to stay loose, and flow toward the interesting. The reality of science is as interesting to me as the fiction about it, so it makes sense to keep a foot in both worlds.

Rating: "A/A+". A thoughtful hard-sf novel of ideas. This is a major work by an oustanding young writer. Highly recommended.
[SF] was a commercial genre born in the old adventure pulp magazines of the first third of the twentieth century, aimed primarily at adolescent males, which, over the decades, in fits and starts, evolved into an intellectually credible, scientifically germane, transcendental literature without losing its popular base. Of what other literature in the history of the western world can this truly be said?
Norman Spinrad
It's been twenty years since humanity was driven from Earth and the Inner System by a runaway Bloom of mycora, a "[nano]technologically generated lebensform" (TGL) that's eaten all of Earth's life (and most of its crust). Humans have retreated to the moons of Jupiter and the Belt the Immunity (Munies) and Gladholders, respectively where constant vigilance is required to keep the Mycosystem at bay. The mycora are generally thought to have been created in an industrial accident, but human malice or an extrasolar origin can't be ruled out.
The viewpoint character (who isn't the strong point of the book, but is more believable than his girlfriend), is a part-time newsnet columnist in Ganymede, a member-state of the Immunity a rather Teutonic, no-nonsense culture, contrasted nicely with the more laid-back, Latinate culture in the Gladholdings. The Gladholders may be more technically advanced.

(7.68 MB, 50:15) Yes, this is a strange experiment. One of my friends recently lost his eyesight, and in the course of investigating assistive computer software we came across Robison Bryan's handy SayPad audio text editor, which is capable, among other things, of converting text into speech in MP3 format. To evaluate the product, we produced an audio book of The Wellstone , as read by the MAPI 4.1 speech synthesizer. It is available here for free download, one file per chapter, and may be distributed freely. The catch? Well, it's read by a machine. No inflection, no emotion, just the words themselves, often with unexpected pronunciation (especially the proper names). Bowing to popular demand, I have made the entire novel available here rather than just a teaser.

"[A] rousing yet thoughtful adventure story." The New York Times Book Review "[A] VIEW OF MANKIND'S FUTURE AND THE UNIVERSE REMINISCENT OF ARTHUR C. CLARKE." The Denver Post "BLOOM is one of the most fast-paced and powerfully dark visions of nanotechnology gone awry since Greg Bear's Blood Music. McCarthy succeeds on many levels, combining a unique literary style with complex scientific speculation and political intrigue." Locus "What clever and compelling science fiction! The Bloom future is all too believable." JAMES GLEICK "Wil McCarthy makes ideas jump. Bloom grabs you from the very first scene and doesn't let go till the last page. It's irresistible." WALTER JON WILLIAMS "Swiftly paced, consistently inventive and tightly written." The Washington Post Book World "McCarthy is an entertaining, intelligent, amusing writer, with Heinlein's knack for breakneck plotting and, at the same time, Clarke's thoughtfulness."
