Successfully Navigating the Literary Marketplace
Author: Wendell Mayo
Date: 01-16-02 First presented March 16, 2000 by Wendell Mayo at the Houston Writers Conference. Imagining the Territory So... you've written something, perhaps you've written many things, but you are faced with the nagging fear that what you've written looks nothing like the popular books you find on newsstands; there are no renegade submarines, love affairs, gosh, not even one murder can be found among the pages of your writing. You fall into a stupor, you dream, you wonder if there is a world where what you write will ever be published and, if not fame, you'll gain at least some recognition for your originality and means of expression. You wake up. You go looking for the real territory that you imagined in your dream ... Finding the Territory The Land of Lakes The Maps As daunting as this land of lakes may be, there are some excellent maps of this literary territory, some in bound volumes and some on the Internet. Here are a few, with descriptions:

Katsura Khan - Danza Butoh

The Lotus Eaters: Citcle of Life
Posted by Vincent Pagano , 11/14/02 at 11:54:39 PM. “Renew! Renew!”
Perhaps one of the most dramatic tales in mythology is legend of the phoenix, which, depending on the culture is a bird that is reborn every 500-1000 years. When it is time for the phoenix to be reborn, it circles the massive fire it has created and is consumed by the flames. As the flames continue to burn, out of the ashes a new phoenix arises and the cycle begins again. For Leopold Bloom in “The Lotus Eaters,” the fifth chapter of Ulysses , his rebirth takes place over a shorter period of time. During the 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. hour, the reader is treated to a dynamic range of what the city of Dublin’s inhabitors are dealing with both socially and economically. Though the specifics of the chapter are seen through the eyes of one man, we are not necessarily treated to a good or bad view of Dublin, but rather an honest one. While the honesty may be one-sided, “James Joyce once said that he wanted to create a picture of Dublin so complete that if one day the city disappeared, it could be reconstructed entirely from his book Ulysses ” (Harmon). From the various happenings in “The Lotus Eaters” as well as it’s focus on the cycle of birth, life, and death, we can draw conclusions that Leopold Bloom is a man whose bearing of the truth may not be exactly what we want to hear.

DEBRIEF: DAVID MAYO
8 Dec 83
Dear Mark, The following are brief accounts of what I consider to be the more germane points of: a) the events leading to my removal from the post of Snr C/S Int and the subsequent CommEv, declare etc., and b) the visit from Geoff Shervell in August '83.
Summary of events leading to my removal
This story probably starts at the end of '81 when several apparently unrelated events occurred. It starts with the re-opening of a comm line from LRH to and from CMO INT and others in late 1981 after a period of almost two years of little to no comm from (or to) LRH (from Feb '80 to Sept '81). Unfortunately, although the comm line was re-opened in late '81, it was a very limited comm line in that all communications travelled through Annie Broeker, Pat Broeker to David Miscavige and back up in reverse order. Pat and Annie were living with LRH and David Miscavige was living primarily at CMO INT. Other than Pat and Annie, no one, including Miscavige, knew of LRH's location. Miscavige would receive a phone call from Pat Broeker and then would go to a restaurant or parking lot and meet Pat Broeker to pass the mail. Thus, there was no way for any comm to get to LRH without it going through those persons. I was one of four people who originally received and sent comm via that line in Sept/Oct '81, these comms from LRH and to LRH were technical.
