An interview with Frances Mayes, Part 1
Lee Svitak Dean, Star Tribune November 7, 2001 "Under the Tuscan Sun," Frances Mayes' 1996 tale of home renovation in Cortona, Italy, with its passion for all things Italian, struck a chord with readers unlikely to ever live in the Tuscan countryside. Perhaps it was the chance that Mayes took buying a rundown house in a foreign country that attracted readers. Maybe it was the pace of Italian life that she described, where good, simple food and warm companionship were high priorities. Undoubtedly, her quiet, descriptive prose kept readers enthralled as her story and renovation unfolded. In her second book, "Bella Tuscany," she wrote, "I came to Italy expecting adventure. What I never anticipated is the absolute sweet joy of everyday life la dolce vita. Mayes will be at Minneapolis' Historic State Theatre Sunday to talk about memoir writing. We caught up with her in a phone interview from Venice, where she was celebrating the 50th birthday of her husband, Edward.

An interview with Frances Mayes, Part 2
Lee Svitak Dean, Star Tribune November 8, 2001 Editor's note: This is a continuation of an interview with author Frances Mayes Frances Mayes was happy; in fact, she bubbled over with pleasure. She and her husband, Edward, had rented an apartment in Venice, Italy, for a week, where they were preparing for a big celebration: Edward's 50th birthday. Friends from Cortona, in Tuscany, where they live, were traveling by train to join them; the two had been cooking all day to get ready. And cooking in Venice, with its bounty from the sea, was a rare treat for Mayes, as was being in this city of canals. "It's got to be the most romantic place in the world," she said in a phone interview. Mayes, author of the memoirs "Under the Tuscan Sun," "Bella Tuscany" and "In Tuscany," has been in Italy away from her San Francisco home since July. After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Mayeses became instant patriots. "It's been very strange because we, of course, are online so we get CNN News, the New York Times, the Washington Post and everything, and still we feel kind of separated. We felt like we would rather have been there. "But the Americans around where we are rallied together and watched the news together. It was interesting in another way to be here because we have seen the European reaction and have been just so relieved and thrilled that all the Italians have come up to us and said, 'This has happened to us, too, and we're the same and it's the whole world that's affected.' It's the feeling of real solidarity among everyone we've met in Europe," Mayes said.

Kliatt
July, 2002 by Jeffrey Cooper
Harcourt. 494p. index, c2001. 0-15-600762-2. $16.00. JSA Frances Mayes is the author of five poetry collections and former Chair of the Creative Writing Department at San Francisco State University. Her love of language and her skill as a teacher of writing are both abundantly evident in this beautifully written guide to the reading and writing of poetry. Mayes touches the usual bases as she explores in depth the essential nature of poetry. Her insightful discussions of imagery, voice, poetic devices, form, and style are generously illustrated with well-chosen examples of poetry from the ancient to the contemporary. Sprinkled throughout the chapters are intriguing "In Your Notebook" features, which suggest written activities that readers may attempt to enhance their appreciation of the poet's art. The final chapter, entitled "The Poet's Handbook," is chockablock with practical exercises to help the would-be poet unleash his or her own muse. Even those young readers who are less interested in learning how poetry works than in getting their own ideas down on paper will find this chapter to be of immense value. While Mayes's rich prose style may sometimes seem a bit intimidating to less sophisticated younger YAs, this is a book that will be treasured by anyone who aspires to a more profound understanding of how to read and write poetry. Jeffrey Cooper, Writer/Editor, Long Island, NY

Ms. Mayes is a poet who has published five books of poetry plus a textbook, The Discovery of Poetry . For almost 25 years, Ms. Mayes taught creative writing to college students. With Swan , she adds novels to her repertoire, bringing together elements of her American homes in California, Georgia and her beloved Italy. 3:32 secs "Home." It's the place for which we long when we are not there, according to Frances Mayes. For her, that place now is Tuscany, which she introduced to the broader world in memoirs including the perennial favorite, Under the Tuscan Sun . Now Ms. Mayes has written a novel about another home, her childhood one in the American South. The elements common to both the South and to Tuscany are as intriguing to Frances Mayes as what makes her two homes different. Perhaps what they have most in common is odd characters, but it's the Land itself, more than the culture, that is defining in both places, she believes. South Georgia gave this memoirist and poet additional grist for her newest creative outlet. While she wanted to write a portrait of a place and an homage to the people she knew growing up, she also is intrigued by the idea of "will," by secrets and by timelessness. All three play major roles in
