Somerset Maugham —
World Traveler, Famed Storyteller
By Craig Showalter
Caxtonian , September 1997 September 1997 marked the 100th anniversary of the publication of W. Somerset Maugham's first novel, Liza of Lambeth . Written during his final year of medical school, the realistic novel draws upon his experiences in treating patients from the Lambeth slums of London. The book achieved modest public acclaim—even notoriety—sufficient, in fact, for Maugham to abandon his medical career to become a full-time writer. A year after his publishing debut, he left London for Capri in Italy, beginning a lifelong pattern of travel and story-telling that became the Maugham persona for millions of readers. Over the next 60 years, he became one of the most successful writers of all time. When Maugham was born—in the British Embassy in Paris in 1874—he was destined to become a lawyer. His father and grandfather had been prominent attorneys, and his oldest brother went on to become England's Lord Chancellor. However, Maugham had a severe stammer, which left him afraid to speak; so there were no plans for him to following the family tradition. Furthermore, he was orphaned by the age of 10 and was sent to England to be raised by an uncle, a clergyman. These circumstances led the young Maugham to be shy and withdrawn; consequently he became an observer rather than an active participant, but he was able to turn this to his advantage as a writer. The unhappiness and anxiety of his early life were recounted in his autobiographical novel

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback W(illiam) Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) British novelist, playwright, short-story writer, highest paid author in the world in the 1930s. Despite his popularity, Maugham did not gain serious recognition. This was expressed in his autobiography THE SUMMING UP (1938), that he stood 'in the very first row of the second-raters'. Maugham's skill in handling plot has been compared by critics in the manner of Guy de Maupassant . In many novels the surroundings are international and the stories are told in clear, economical style with cynical or resigned undertone. "I have never pretended to be anything but a story teller. It has amused me to tell stories and I have told a great many. It is a misfortune for me that the telling of a story just for the sake of the story is not an activity that is in favor with the intelligentsia. In endeavor to bear my misfortunes with fortitude." At the age of 10 Maugham was orphaned and sent to England to live with his uncle, the vicar of Whitstable. Educated at King's School, Canterbury, and Heidelberg University, Maugham then studied six years medicine in London. He qualified in 1897 as doctor from St. Thomas' medical school but abandoned medicine after the success of his first novels and plays.

At the age of 10, Maugham was orphaned and sent to England to live with his uncle, the vicar of Whitstable. Educated at King's School, Canterbury, and Heidelberg University, Maugham then studied medicine in London for six years. He qualified in 1897 as doctor from St. Thomas' medical school but abandoned medicine after the success of his first novels and plays. Maugham lived in Paris for ten years as a struggling young author. His first novel, Liza of Lambeth appeared in 1897, and drew on his experiences of attending women in childbirth. His first play, A Man of Honor , was produced in 1903. Four of his plays ran simultaneously in London in 1904. Maugham's breakthrough novel was the semi-autobiographical Of Human Bondage (1915), which is usually considered his outstanding achievement. Disguised as a reporter, Maugham worked for the British Intelligence in Russia during the Russian Revolution in 1917, but his stuttering and poor health hindered his career in this field. He then set off with a friend on a series of travels to eastern Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Mexico. His most famous story, which became the play Rain and was made into several movies, was inspired by a missionary and prostitute among his fellow passengers on a trip to Pago Pago. In the 1928 he settled in Cape Ferrat in France.

Aus dem Leben von W.S. Maugham
William Somerset Maugham (1874 - 1965)

...the Wanderling.

Obeah, as practiced in Jamaica and the Caribbean, takes the USE OF and KNOWLEDGE OF ancient occult powers orginally handed down over the centuries by word of mouth from the remnants of a once very powerful and celebrated religious order in remote ages, now lost in the mist of time, and combines it with Shamanism - as practiced mostly by tribal people who spoke Ashanti from West Africa - Sorcery, Voudon (Voodoo), and witchcraft. It is a dying breed shrouded in secrecy known and practiced only by a select few. Even fewer ever truly enter the ranks of Obeah and able to successfully wield its will and awesome scope unscathed. An Obeahman can use ANY system and fuel it with the power of Obeah without the danger of disrespect FOR the gods, but, depending on circumstances, not necessarily without repercussions

    How The Razor's Edge Got It's Name
    WILLIAM SOMERSET MAUGHAM opens his novel The Razor's Edge with the following quote:
    The sharp edge of a razor is difficult to pass over;
    the the wise say the path to Salvation is hard.
    The quote is followed with a line below it containing the hyphenated words Katha-Upanishad citing Maugham's original source, while elsewhere it is stated that the actual title of the book was derived from that exact same quote. But what is the Katha-Upanishad? How does the quote fit into IT'S source? The quote is found below at PART ONE, Chapter III, Verse 14 (1.iii.14). The whole of the Katha-Upanishad follows, but you can go to the specific quote by clicking HERE if you like. When Maugham needed to translate that particular passage of the Katha Upanishad for The Razor's Edge , he sought out Chistopher Isherwood , a follower of Swami Vivekananda and a member of the Vedanta Society of Southern California as well as being an author in his own right. Because of his input, after the book became a runnaway best seller, Isherwood was regarded by many as Maugham's model for Larry Darrell , the novel's main character who gives up a privileged life in search of spiritual Enlightenment. Maugham, well known for inserting aspects of friends and foes in real life into his books remained mum, but Isherwood himself emphatically denied he was the character's source, and, of course, in actuality, he wasn't. At one time Isherwood became so identified with Larry Darrell that he wrote Time magazine to set the record straight when his book
