Translation and the Oulipo: The Case of the Persevering Maltese
Harry Mathews These pages were first presented at the French Institute in London in October, 1996, as the third of the St. Jerome lectures, a series devoted to the topic of translation. The word "Oulipo" is the acronym of the Ouvroir de littérature potentielle , or Workshop for potential literature, a group founded in 1960 by Raymond Queneau and François Le Lionnais. The group was created to explore what becomes possible when writing is subjected to arbitrary and restrictive procedures, preferably definable in mathematical terms. Since many have found this undertaking preposterous, it seemed useful to turn to translation and its attendant problems in making the interest of Oulipian methods clearer to skeptical writers and readers, as well as in examining the Case of the Persevering Maltese. A Problem in Translation S Starting from Tagota at the mouth of the Fly, Botherby traversed the river by steam launch to a point over five hundred miles inland, whence he proceeded in more modest craft almost to its headwaters. After establishing a base camp, he traveled across the plains into the mountain forests, finally arriving at the unexplored region he was looking for, a complex of valleys lyingto use the toponymy of the timebetween the Kaiserin Augusta, the Victor Emmanuel Mountains, and the continuation of the Musgrave Range. In one of these valleys Botherby discovered, as he had hoped, his first archaic tribe. He designates it as that of the Ohos. This community, numbering no more than a few hundred, lived a peaceable existence in conditions of extreme simplicity. They were hunter-gatherers equipped with rudimentary tools. They procured fire from conflagrations occurring in forests nearby but were incapable of making it otherwise. They also used speech, but a speech reduced to its minimum. The Oho language consisted of only three words and one expression, the invariable statement, "Red makes wrong." Having patiently won over the tribal chiefs, Botherby was able to verify this fact during the many weeks he spent with them. Other needs and wishes were communicated by sounds and signs; actual words were never used except for this unique assertion that "Red makes wrong."

Tlooth
Harry Mathews
Dalkey Archive Press 1998 Amazon A book review by Danny Yee Wildly inventive and original, Tlooth combines linguistic games, parodies of different forms, puzzles, and strange narrative twists, in excursions antiquarian, ethnographic, salacious, and fantastic. The story begins in a prison camp in Siberia, with a baseball game between the Defective Baptists and the Fideists; there follows an escape through Central Asia, a sojourn in Venice, and a whirlwind chase through India, Morocco, and France. The plot involves attempts to take revenge against a surgeon for accidentally removing the left-hand index and ring fingers of the narrator who had previously been a violinist. The individual vignettes and episodes in Tlooth are, however, more memorable than the framing story. Some of the prison camp inmates are involved with the production and international distribution of maple syrup, using it as cover for smuggling illegal Chinese medicine. An esoteric history of a feud between the families of the Chavenders and the Allants includes a two page document in a mish-mash of languages. There is a passage describing a sexual encounter in which the orthography degrades as the encounter progresses: "She lay on her knack and i lelt straddling her, my bees in her armpits, heading over her lean, my rest head and onds owning on the floor beyarmed her." (A useful device for evading censorware, though also guaranteed to give spell-checkers the fits.) An account of a flood in Rajasthan, in which ants help to rescue cattle, falls half-way between fable and ethnography. And so forth.

Note: The rule of the chronogram is that when all letters corresponding to Roman numerals (c, d, i, l, m, v, and x) are added together, they produce a sum equivalent to a specific year of the Christian calendar.
January starts: sun here, stars there.
  • In the Irkukst penitentiary ironworks the night shift is finishing its stint, skirting weighty pig-iron ingots as it regains the prison interior. In Pienza, Ernestina is heating tripe fiorentina for thirteen. In Brighton Ignatius is getting high quaffing his fifth straight Irish whisky. Arising at eight in Brisbane, Ian, aspiring historian of propitious intuitions, enjoys the benign aberration that, by getting a grip on his utopian fusion of Augustinian with Einsteinian reasoning, he is attaining a genuine gnosis. In Etrurian Tarquinia, Gigi is eating spaghetti with pepperoni. Bobbie is sitting with Bert in a Parisian bistro, in whose noisy interior untiring opportunists are satisfying pretentious ninnies with inferior white wine. Heroin originating in Iquitos is winning first prize with tertiary bargaining arbitrators in Tijuana.

Harry Mathews at Penn
Harry Mathews did a wonderful reading last night at Penn at the exhibit Composing. I got to introduce Harry. There was a great turnout, which included - besides the usual suspects from around campus and the friends of the library - Fernando Pereira, the chair of the computer and information science department; Scott, who came in from New Jersey despite grades being due today; Marie Chaix, Harry's wife; artist Trevor Winkfield, who also was publisher of Harry's first book, The Ring ; and Tina Packer, founder and artistic director of Shakespeare and Co. Harry Mathews, born 1930, is an American writer who divides his time between the United States and France. He has composed an extraordinary range of literature: five novels ( The Conversions, Tlooth, The Sinking of the Odradek Stadium, Cigarettes, and The Journalist ), several collections of poetry, shorter fiction (collected in The Human Country, Dalkey Archive Press, 2001) and eclectic nonfiction (collected in The Case of the Persevering Maltese, Dalkey Archive Press, 2002). He has done many translations from French, has written original literary works in French, and has written about and in conjunction with art and music. Mathews is also the creator of several works that defy simple classification. He is now completing a book called My Life in CIA.

Calibrations of Latitude
by Harry Mathews
I.
On a sunny Wednesday morning in early May, rigorous of mind and sound of body in spite of advancing years, Sir Joseph Pernican set forth on his quest. He felt, in addition to confidence, a provocative unease. The familiar man who had provided his instructions had signified that the clues he would find on his way would take unexpected guises; divining them would depend on his accepting them attentively and without prejudice. Sir Joseph was sure at least of his starting-point. He had also chosen what impressed him as the most likely (because most eastwards) path. But although he had been informed of the principles that must guide him, he had no certainty as to how those principles should be applied, nor did he know what he was meant to find, except for this: its discovery would provide an explanation, and a definitive one. As he stepped onto the sidewalk, he turned to the right, thereafter crossing several streets on the way to his first stopping place: a street that once led to a sand pit; a street commemorating yet another Napoleonic general; a market street that despite change still retained an old-fashioned image of its earlier self; bordering a cemetery, a street renamed for a heroic fireman. He entered a large circular square, which he partially skirted. A crowd of people some distance away was packing itself into a subway entrance. He left behind a temple-like building, whose one remaining function was to serve as gateway to a domain hidden beneath him, a world of cloudy hewed chalk. He did not bother to consider, at the center of the square, a shrunk bronze beast.

Writers' Workshops - January 11-14, 1999 HARRY
MATHEWS

MR. MATHEWS will be leading one of our writers' workshops this year. HARRY MATHEWS was born in New York on Valentine's Day 1930. His parents did all they could to give their only son a best education. To an extent they succeeded: he learned to work efficiently enough so as not to have to learn much else. He graduated from Harvard highly uneducated. He did know one thing: in 1952, his comfortable Waspish world made him feel like a foreigner. He decided to become an honest-to-God foreigner. With their daughter Laura, he and his wife, Niki de Saint Phalle, moved to France to study what they thought were their respective crafts (music and theater). They there soon discovered their true vocations: writing and art. They stayed on. A son, Philip, was born in 1955. In 1958 they settled in a mountain village near Grenoble; there their marriage came to a difficult but necessary end. Photo: Marie Chaix Back in Paris, Mathews distractedly looked after his children for many years. Several crucial encounters took place: in 1956, with John Ashbery, a witty mentor who radically expanded Mathews's views of writing and introduced him to a new and agreeable New York; with Maxine Groffsky, who jubilantly guided him through and beyond the explosive 60s; with Georges Perec in 1970, who until his death in 1982 was Mathews's closest friend, introducing him the the Oulipo and its brilliant members, keeping his mind on an acceptably uneven keel, supporting his writing with ingenious resolution; finally, in 1976, with Marie Chaix, whose stupendous first novel Mathews just happened to translate and with whom he has lived ever since (the two were married in 1992).
