Because the plot deals realistically about a fractured family and a teen's struggle for control, students can better grasp what Etta May herself finally comes to understand: while we cannot control life, we can affect parts of it. Bits of humor lighten what could be a heavy tone as it asks readers to think about family, separation, and loss. Thematic Links Friendship Ask students to describe Etta May and Quentin's friendship. Etta May calls him her best friend. What are the qualities in Quentin that she says, "made me forget the rough edges?" Both of their mothers have left for different reasons. How might this strengthen their friendship? At first Etta May doesn't trust her neighbor Mrs. Moreles who she thinks is a snoop. How and when does her attitude change?

Summer Song
By Susan Rowan Masters
137 pages
Fiction
Main Characters: Etta May - a young teenage girl. Gent - grandfather. Claire - mother. Summary of Story: Etta May was left when she was a baby to live with her grandparents. Her mother was young and never visited her regularly. After her grandmother died, she was responsible for taking care of Gent and the trailer house where they lived. Gent's latest medical check-up results showed there was a problem. He continually tells Etta May that he does not want to end up in the hospital like her grandmother. Claire returns home to help take care of things but she and Etta May do not get along. When Gent is taken to the hospital because of breathing problems, Etta May is faced with the realization that Gent has to be placed in a long-term care facility. Etta May and her mother make plans to ease this transition by moving Gent's bed to his new room. After a heartfelt talk, Etta May and her mother reconcile. Claire makes plans to stay with Etta May. She confesses her mistakes and promises to make everything right this time around. Opinion: I likes this book because of Etta May. She was a very responsible, loving, and determined young lady. I think her qualities are a good role model.

THE SECRET LIFE OF HUBIE HARTZEL
Submitted By Susan Rowan Masters
for grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 Date submitted : 31 Oct 2000 "With its likable characters and funny scenes, Masters's light and breezy saga is eminently appealing." Publisher's Weekly Teaching Ideas The Secret Life of Hubie Hartzel is a fast-paced story about the perils of life in the fifth grade. Humor is one of the themes that helps lighten the story as Hubie deals with family, school, a class bully, and the eventual loss of the family pet. Thematic Links Bullying Ask students to describe Marucci’s behavior toward Hubie and Frank. Then ask them to recount other ways in which an individual or a group can bully someone. Help them recognize the wide range bullying can take: from teasing or leaving an individual out of a social gathering on purpose to serious verbal/physical attacks. What would they do if they found themselves in with a group of kids who were bullying another student? Have them explain the statement: it takes courage to stand up to peer pressure and do what’s right. Ask them to think of a time they might have been bullied. Was it deeply hurtful? Lead students to understand that it is not only the action taken but the effect it has on the victim that counts. Discuss what they should do if they witness someone being bullied (i.e., talk to a teacher/parent). What if the person they witness doing the bullying is a friend? Should they tell an adult about their friend’s behavior? Is there a point in which they should let an adult know?
