Yee Bow Notes on Life and Works Edgar Lee Masters was born August 23, 1868, in Garnett, Kansas, and spent his youth in Shipley Hill, Petersburg, and Lewistown, Illinois. Masters in 1915-16 depicted the latter two communities in his Spoon River Anthology . Educated at Knox College in 1889-90, Masters went on to study the law and was admitted to the bar in 1891. He practised law and from 1903 to 1911 was partner with Clarence Darrow in Chicago. After his great success with the Spoon River Anthology and winning Poetry magazine's Levinson Prize in 1916, Masters took up writing novels, biographies, and poetry full-time, but his later work was less successful with readers. In 1942, however, Masters won both the Award in Literature from American Academy and the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and the medal of the Poetry Society of America. Two years later he merited the Shelley Memorial Award, and in 1946 a fellowship from the American Academy of Poets. He died March 5, 1950, in Melrose Park, Pennsylvania. He had three children by his first wife, Helen Jenkins (married 1898, divorced 1923), and one child by his second wife, Ellen F. Coyne, an English teacher. Masters is buried in Petersburg, Illinois.

Internet Research Guide Textbook Site for: The Heath Anthology of American Literature , Fourth Edition Paul Lauter, General Editor Edgar Lee Masters Edgar Lee Masters is best-known for his internationally acclaimed Spoon River Anthology (1915), a book which prompted Ezra Pound to conclude that “at last America has discovered a poet” and British critic John Cowper Powys to call Masters “the natural child of Walt Whitman.” The Spoon River graveyard epitaphs spoke not only to the heart of America but to the anxieties and triumphs of humanity everywhere. Masters’s later works have not received the critical acclaim they deserve. In spite of his popularity with the public, his poetry and fiction have been slighted by many critics who complain that he wrote too much too quickly. Masters was raised in Petersburg in western Illinois—an area he celebrated often in his hymns to the eternal energy of the midwestern prairies. A lawyer by profession, he admitted to having read Shelley and Browning on the side camouflaged by law books in his office. His poetry was influenced by the tightness of the Greek Anthology and the expanse of Beethoven. He felt “lifted and strengthened” by Emerson; he was influenced by Whitman’s native genius, Browning’s dramatic monologues, Goethe’s epic yearnings, Shelley’s liberating imagery. Masters was also an astute critic of American culture.

Chicago was also the home of Harriet Monroe's Poetry , the most important literary magazine of the day. Among the intriguing contemporary poets the journal printed was Edgar Lee Masters, author of the daring Spoon River Anthology (1915), with its new "unpoetic" colloquial style, frank presentation of sex, critical view of village life, and intensely imagined inner lives of ordinary people. Spoon River Anthology is a collection of portraits presented as colloquial epitaphs (words found inscribed on gravestones) summing up the lives of individual villagers as if in their own words. When Masters is relatively simple in form and message, that throws them. To address this issue, talk about popular arts, the oral tradition, the enormous popularity of Spoon River , and the fact that all poetry need not be academic. Masters provides a good chance to talk with students about what they think poetry is or ought to be and how the literary establishment can or cannot control popular opinion. Use some multimedia presentations, reading out loud. Bring in some actors from university theater. Students are interested in events from the poet's life and factors that led him to write this kind of poetry. They wonder how any book of poems could have been that popular. No TV back then, they suspect.
