Joanot Martorell N ovelista valenciano. Su obra Tirant lo Blanc , encomiada por Cervantes en el Quijote, marca un hito en la evolución de la narrativa caballeresca. Descendiente de una noble familia de Gandía (Valencia), ciudad donde nació y falleció, la vida de Joanot Martorell se documenta principalmente a través de los litigios que mantuvo con otros caballeros y que en ocasiones motivaron carteles de desafío, algunos a muerte, que no pasaron del forcejeo verbal. Uno de estos conflictos lo lleva a Inglaterra (1438) donde conoció el poema anglonormando del siglo XII Guy de Warwick, que luego traducirá en prosa con el título de Guillem de Varoic. El espíritu de los carteles de desafío sintetiza con esta traducción y de modo muy especial, con el Llibre de l'ordre de cavalleria de Ramon Llull, en la primera parte del Tirant lo Blanc , donde el protagonista se inicia como valeroso caballero en Inglaterra. El héroe, valiente y tímido a la vez, proseguirá sus hazañas guerreras en Sicilia, Rodas y Túnez; finalmente salva al Imperio bizantino de los turcos y se convierte, tras su boda con la princesa Carmesina, en César del Imperio. Poco después muere de pulmonía: justo final de una obra que hábilmente combina los ideales caballerescos con el más crudo realismo. Joanot Martorell Joanot Martorell werd geboren in Valencia, Spanje, tussen 1405 en 1410 en stierf in 1465. De familie van Martorell was aanvankelijk in dienst van de hertogen van Gandia en later in dienst van het koninklijk huis van Catalonië-Aragon. Voor hun bewezen diensten voor het koninklijk huis verkregen zij een adellijke titel, die hun aanzien en bezit deed groeien. Martorell werd als universeel erfgenaam aangeduid, maar raakte uiteindelijk volledig aan de grond. Tot voor kort werd aangenomen dat het ridderverhaal Tirant lo Blanc het werk was van twee auteurs: Joanot Martorell en Martí Joan de Galba. In 1990, vijfhonderd jaar na het verschijnen van het boek, startte er een documentair onderzoek.
