Jose Marti, uniting figure of Cuba CUBA GLOSSARY Revolution monument in Havana. Both the Castro regime and its right-wing opponents based in Miami have claimed Jose Marti as their own. If Fidel Castro divides Cubans around the world into pros and antis, Jose Marti, the hero of the country's independence struggle against the Spanish, unites them
The thin, frail, intellectual who was shot dead in his first battle, early in the campaign that would actually lead to Cuban independence in 1898, strikes a very different image to Castro and Guevara, whose image is of epic heroes who fought dozens of battles while chomping on Havana cigars.
But he had done all the hard work by then - 15 years of night and day campaigning , fundraising, speechgiving and agitation in the United States, where he had fled after a prison term in Cuba for treason.

History of Cuba 2. Jose Marti 1853-1895 and the War of Independence by Hannah Caller Jose Marti is the national hero of Cuba, his revolutionary writings studied by every child in the country. In yet another attempt to insult the Cuban Revolution, the US radio and TV channels specially created to broadcast subversive and hostile propaganda into Cuba from Florida are called Radio and TV Marti.
  • Jose Marti, political activist, poet, journalist and teacher, was born in Cuba. His father was Spanish and his mother was from the Canary islands. From a young age he was politically involved and came into conflict with the government, doing 6 years hard labour at 16 years old for anti-government activity, and then being deported to Spain.
  • He spent time in the USA where he mobilised support for the Cuban revolution amongst Cuban exiles. He was against the annexation of Cuba to the US, being proposed in the 1880s mostly by middle class Cubans and supported by the USA. 'In the USA, the causes of unity instead of coalescing, have become dispersed; humanity's problems, instead of being solved, have been increased, democracy has been corrupted and indermined and has given birth to menacing poverty and hatred.'
  • Jose Marti believed that the Cuban liberation struggle could only be built by the working class. During the 10 Year War, some leaders had relied on rich Cuban emigres and ignored the black working class. In the US, much of his work was based amongst the black Cuban tobacco workers who had emigrated to find work. He said, 'There is no danger of war between the races in Cuba. Man means more than white man, mulatto or black man. The souls of white men and negroes have risen together from the battlefield where they have fought and died for Cuba.'

[1869] Ultramar. La Habana, mayo de 1946.

Woman donates note written by Jose Marti to UM By FABIOLA SANTIAGO
Herald Staff Writer For most of her life, Carmen Alea Paz has treasured a fraying caramel-colored piece of paper scribbled with the thoughts of a great man. The author was Cuban Independence War hero Jose Marti and the writing a reflection on the flag is believed to be one of his celebrated pensamientos. Paz, now a Cuban exile who lives in California, won the rare original and a certification of its authenticity at a Havana writing contest in 1948. ``It's a little piece of my heart,'' Paz said Thursday afternoon as she donated her Jose Marti note to the University of Miami's Cuban Collection, the largest compilation of publications, documents and historical memorabilia outside of the island. Paz's gift is the fifth original Marti writing the library has obtained. ``I have loved it deeply,'' a teary-eyed Paz said. ``It is a miracle how it came to be in my hands. Now it is where it belongs.'' ``It's a beautiful thought on the flag,'' said Esperanza B. de Varona, curator of UM's Cuban archives. ``A treasure.''

Jose Marti was born in 1853, in Havana to a soldier of the Spanish garrison who had retired to become a watchman. Rafael Maríía Mendive (1821-1886), educational reformer convinced Marti’s father to let Marti study at a secondary school. Jose later attended the Instituto de Havana (1866-1869) where he worked on the underground periodicals El Diablo Cojuelo and La Patria Libre . At the age of sixteen, Marti was arrested for subversion and his sentencing was six years of hard labor in a chain gang. Within a year he was exiled to Spain, where he studied at the University of Madrid (1873) and University of Saragosa where he received a law degree in 1873. A year later he received a degree in philosophy and letters. While in Spain in 1871 he published El presidio de Cuba. His three major collections of poems were
