Description
Celebrating the 400th anniversary of John Marston’s debut as a professional playwright, this collection of critical essays on his work by leading scholars in the early modern field discovers, in the de-centred, hilarious, but unsettling work of this idiosyncratic Renaissance dramatist, an uncannily post-modern voice. Always at odds with his contemporaries, the censor and sometimes his own audience, Marston is shown to be a deeply conflicted figure but the qualities which estranged him from previous critical eras are precisely those that are now instantly accessible. This volume’s essays, the themes of which coincide both in contemporary currents in literary theory and criticism and in the plays of John Marston, reveal at every turn the full extent of his ambiguity towards politics, gender and the very medium he wrote for and in.

Katherine Armstrong Possets, pills and poisons: Physicking the Female Body in Early Seventeenth-Century Drama No. 61 (April 2002), pp. 43-56 INDEX TERMS 1) Drama 4) Middleton, Thomas 7) Drugs 2) Marston, John 5) Rowley, William 8) Source criticism 3) Webster, John 6) Gender The Malcontent The Duchess of Malfi The Changeling (1623). Whenever women in these plays come into contact with drugs, whether involuntarily or by choice, the results are unpredictable and dangerous, reflecting fears about the inadequacy of contemporary epistemologies to explain, control or contain female sexuality. Indeed, these epistemologies, the new science of empiricism and the old science of the occult, are actually gendered as female in contemporary discourse, since like women they are considered apt to cozen and mislead. Furthermore, male playwrights typically seek to assuage the misogynistic fears raised by the juxtaposition of women and drugs in their plays by representing the female body itself as a kind of poisonous substance which must be expunged in order to effect the catharsis on which the resolutions of their tragedies depend. Kahan, Jeffrey. "Reassessing the Use of Doubling in Marston's Antonio and Mellida ." Early Modern Literary Studies http://purl.oclc.org/emls/02-2/kahamars.html
  • Scholars have long pointed out that doubling is a prime feature of Antonio and Mellida . The feature is even mentioned in the text. In the Induction to the play, the actor playing Alberto states that "The necessity of the play forceth me to act two parts: Andrugio the distressed Duke of Genoa, and Alberto a Venetian gentleman enamoured on the Lady Rossaline . . ." (Induction 21-24). But recent scholars of the play are mistaken in believing that this isolated instance of doubling is proof of its widespread practice within the entire play. Moreover, the play's lack of doubling may yield valuable insights concerning Marston's company, the Paul's Children.
In a recent of the study of the Paul's Children, Reavley Gair points out that the Antonio and Mellida begins with eight boys discussing their parts. According to Gair, "They must double some parts" (Gair

    John Leslie Marston (Jack)
    A Son's Memography
    Ancestors
Before going overseas in 1976 I heard that if going to England it was handy to have proof that a Grandparent was born in England. I knew my Grandfather on Dad's side fell into this category so I got a series of official copies of birth and marriage certificates. From these are deduced the following ancestory.
John Leslie Marston was born in Dunedin on the 2nd of September 1913 to Annie Mary Jane Marston (nee Smith) aged 29 and her husband George Ernest Marston, Wireworker, aged 31. George Ernest Marston was the son of John Marston, Iron Plate Worker and Fanny Marston (nee Stephens) of Bethnal Green in the County of Middlesex and was born on the 8th of July 1882 at 4 Baudon Road. It is interesting to note that Jack's occupation was Boilermaker and that one of his sons, Jim, became a Fitter and Turner. The iron working trades was carried on for 4 generations as was the names John and Ernest in the youngest son of Jack - Jon Ernest Marston. I inherited the name Leslie as my middle name. Jim, the eldest son appears to have got Jim from Jack's brother and Robert from Mom's brother. Alan was imported new from I don't know where.
    1913 To 1946
Jack Marston grew up in various locations from North Dunedin to South Dunedin, as the family shifted several time in this period. St Kilda, where the Marston family finally settled was the most heavily populated part of New Zealand and a staunch working class area dominated by the Hillside Railway Workshops to the West, the shopping area to the North, St Kilda and St Clair Beaches to the East and the hills of South Dunedin to the South. Jack was the second of three sons and the youngest child a daughter; in order Ernie, Jack, Jim and Maire. That's Jack on the left in the photo below.
