[O]ne only reads well when one reads with some quite personal goal in mind. It may be to acquire some power. It can be out of hatred for the author. Paul Valery (2) Deep art implies a destruction of order for the sake of reordering. There is something incorrigible and anarchic lurking in art. Robert Penn Warren (3) 1. Background In his essay, Eliot concentrates on Marston's plays and considers the satires only in their secondary relationship to the plays. According to Eliot, it is the plays that win for Marston any claim to power or genius. In fact, if Marston may justly be called a poet, he merits this title not because of his satires but because of his plays. Marston is very competent, and perfectly perfunctory. He wrote satires, as he wrote Pygmalion, in order to succeed; and when he found that the satire was more likely to lead him to the gaol than to success, he seems to have taken up, in the same spirit, the writing of plays. And however laboured the first two tragical plays may be, there is more poetry in them than in anything he had written before. (166)

Instead Goltzius focused primarily on the human figure because the painting is at the moment right before Galatea comes to life. The Roman Numerals below the painting state the following:

Satirist and dramatist. It was Marston's lack of critical control and the bad taste of his extravagance which caused the satirical attacks on him by Jonson. His violent revulsion from sensuality and worldly vice inspired some of his best passages as well as his worst ones. Bibliography

http://www.luminarium.org/sevenlit/webster/webbio.htm
Very little is known about the life of John Webster. He was the son of a London carriage maker, John Webster, who was a member of the Merchant Taylors' Company before being made free in 1571. His father married on November 4, 1577, to Elizabeth Coates. It is assumed that John Webster was born soon after, but since the parish records were destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666, no accurate date exists. It is possible that John Webster attended the respected Merchant Taylors' School, but there is no evidence to the same. There is a record of a John Webster entered at Middle Temple, one of the Inns of Court, in 1598, but it is not certain that he was John Webster, the playwright. It is, however, likely, considering Webster's connections with Templars Sir Thomas Overbury John Marston , and John Ford , as well as his knowledge of law as evidenced later by his plays. Yet whoever this Webster was, he was never called to the bar.
Webster started in the theatre working for Philip Henslowe . The first mention of Webster as a writer comes in 1602 when Anthony Munday Michael Drayton Thomas Middleton , and John Webster were paid an advance for a now-lost play titled Caesar's Fall (or Two Shapes Webster's first known work dates from 1604. In 1604 Webster wrote an Induction for the revival of

I was from England, and I lived from 1575-1634. Print or Buy my poetry? View comments Add to favorites? John Marston was born about 1575. He came of good family and was considered a gentleman. His father was a lawyer who became a member of the Middle Temple in London but who practiced in Coventry. John Marston was presumably educated in the grammar school in Coventry; in 1591, when he was sixteen we know that he entered Oxford and completed his bachelorÂ’s degree two years later. It is likely that he began the study of law. He apparently did little in that career but he was buried in the Middle Temple and was registered there as "sometimes of the Middle Temple," so he seems to have qualified to practice law.
He was mainly interested in literature, however, especially in satiric poetry and over the course of his literary career he was often embroiled in some kind of literary dispute with other writers, first a man named Joseph Hall, the author of some satiric verses who later became a bishop, and then with Ben Jonson. Today this is of little interest to any except specialists in the field of Elizabethan drama, but at the time the conflict developed into what became known as the War of the Theatres; it also inspired a series of plays in which Jonson attacked Marston who would then answer in a play of his own which Jonson would then respond to in his next play and so on. Later the two men reconciled. Morse Allen summarizes this quarrel as follows:

After both these works were burned in 1599 by order of the archbishop of Canterbury, Marston began writing for the stage. His most notable plays are the love story Antonio and Mellida (1599); its sequel, the revenge tragedy Antonio's Revenge (1599); his masterpiece, The Malcontent (1604), a tragicomedy that derides aristocratic behavior; and The Dutch Courtezan (1605), a bitterly anti-female comedy. Marston was involved in the war of the theaters against Ben Jonson from 1599 to 1601, while both playwrights were writing for rival companies of child actors. Later, the two men became friends and collaborated with George Chapman in writing Eastward Ho!

    http://www.umpi.maine.edu/~ricer/research/marstonrevisions.htm
Review: T. F. Wharton, ed. The Drama of John Marston: Critical Re-Visions . Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2000. For a dramatist with at least three canonically important works ( The Dutch Courtesan The Malcontent , and Antonio’s Revenge ) contemporary critics have been especially chary of addressing John Marston’s plays. Of those three works, one ( Antonio’s Revenge ) finds general mention only as a spectacularized and stylized foil to Hamlet . Indeed, only a single work— The Dutch Courtesan —today receives attention approaching any degree of regularity: Susan Baker, Donna Hamilton, and Jean Howard have each written outstanding materialist/feminist appraisals. This continuing paucity of critical regard is especially surprising given the astonishing generic range and inventiveness of Marston’s plays as well as their incisive representations of a particularly volatile period in Early Modern culture. Marston collaborated brilliantly with some of the most distinguished dramatists of the period (Ben Jonson and George Chapman on Eastward Ho!

    The Malcontent by John Marston
Simon Trussler and William Naismith (ed)
A student edition of Marston's classic play The Malcontent is a tragicomedy deriving from the tradition of the revenge play. The verbal ingenuity of Malevole, the "malcontent", and the extravagance of the drama, push the relentlessness of intrigue to its logical conclusion, exposing the basically comic aspect of the genre. The conventional function of the climactic masque is inverted, leading to the essential resolution of the comedy. This edition comes with full commentary and notes, together with photos of Jonathan Miller's acclaimed 1973 production at the Nottingham Playhouse.

Far worthier lines in silence of thy state
Do sleep securely, free from love or hate,
