    The Scourge of Villainy
    (Excerpt: Proemium in Librum Tertium)
In serious jest, and jesting seriousness, I strive to scourge polluting beastliness; I invocate no Delian deity, No sacred offspring of Mnemosyne; I pray in aid of no Castalian Muse, No nymph, no female angel, to infuse A sprightly wit to raise my flagging wings, And teach me tune these harsh discordant strings. I crave no sirens of our halcyon times, To grace the accents of my rough-hew'd rhymes; But grim Reproof, stern Hate of Villainy, Inspire and guide a Satire's poesy. Fair Detestation of foul odious sin, In which our swinish times lie wallowing, Be thou my conduct and my Genius, My wits-inciting sweet-breath'd Zephyrus. O that a Satire's hand had force to pluck Some floodgate up, to purge the world from muck! Would God I could turn Alpheus river in, To purge this Augean oxstall from foul sin! Well, I will try; awake, Impurity, And view the veil drawn from thy villainy! Notes ] This is from three books of satires, first published in 1598, followed by a second edition in 1599.

JOHN MARSTON (c. 1575-1634) English dramatist and satirist
JOHN MARSTON On the 28th of September 1599 Henslowe notices in his diary that he lent unto Mr Maxton, the new poete, the sum of forty shillings, as an advance on a play which is not named. Another hand has amended Maxton to Mastone. The earliest plays to which Marstons name is attached are The History of Antonio and Mellida. The First Part; and Antonios Revenge. The Second Part (both entered at Stationers Hall in I6o1 and printed 2602). The second part is preceded by a prologue which, in its gloomy forecast of the play, moved the admiration of Charles Lamb, who also compares the situation of Andrugio and Lucia to Lear and Kent, but the scene which he quotes gives a misleading idea of the play and of the general tenor of Marstons work. About Marston and The Plot of the Malcontent
John Marston's career first started in 1598 with the publishing of The Metamorphosis of Pigmalions Image and Certaine Satyres and The Scourge of Villanie. Then, between 1599 and 1606, Marston wrote all of his self-written plays, including Histriomastix, Jack Drum's Entertainment, Antonio and Mellida and Antonio's Revenge, What You Will, The Fawn, The Dutch Courtesan, Sophonisba, and The Malcontent. It is the last of these plays that is of importance to this particular study of Marston's work.
In The Malcontent, Marston outlines an essentially moral, Christian pattern. As Geckle points out, avarice, envy, wrath, lechery, and pride are all sins of the world that several characters in the play allow themselves to be overtaken by. Pietro, Mendoza, Ferneze, Aurelia, and Maquerelle let fortune control their lives and are doomed for unhappiness. Pietro, however, taking the protagonist Altofronto's advice, is saved after developing a moral sense and accepting God's will. Mendoza, learns too late that there is no contentment in earthly things after placing all his hope in fortune and fate. As Geckle suggests, the element of Providence in the play "does not lead the sinners to death but either to spiritual regeneration or to rejection from the new society." In this play, Marston creates a plot in which the themes and ideas are morally explicit and comment on the life of the people of the sixteenth century.

John Marston; His Family, and His Career Introduction John Marston was an extremely successful Victorian manufacturer who's goods helped to make the name Wolverhampton synonymous with quality. He became one of the country's largest manufacturers of japanware, and later made bicycles, motorcycles and cars, that were second to none. He also had an active public life and became Lord Mayor of the town. The Early Years
The Oaks In 1865 John married Ellen Edge, who was seven years his junior. Their first son Charles was born on April 6th 1867. The business prospered and when Edward Perry died in 1871, John purchased Perry's Jeddo works to become one of the major manufacturers of japanware in the town. John and Ellen lived at the Oaks in Merridale Road and had another nine children. The eldest girl and youngest boy died at an early age. In 1877 the works were extended into Paul Street. The product range included bread dishes, dish covers, pots, pans, kettles, spirit lamps, foot warmers and black enamel ware. John even invented a machine for melting snow, but it was not successful. The company became one of the two largest makers of black enamelled ware in the country. John also became a member of a local school board, and then a local councillor for St. Paul's ward in 1885.
John in his early 50's During the same year Charles entered the business at the age of 18. He was unpaid, and in the mornings worked on clerical duties such as invoicing. He then caught the 11.38 train to Birmingham, to attend a part-time chemistry course at Mason College, which is now part of Birmingham University. On his arrival in Birmingham he would have lunch with friends at Pattison's or Benson's and after his lecture would catch the 1.40 North Western train back to Wolverhampton. Back at the works he would work in the dispatch department, sending off the orders. He arrived home at about 6 o'clock and after tea would have a singing lesson, practice the organ or play whist with his sisters.

    Key to Symbols and Numbers
The number before a name or group of names indicates location of the house on the map. Note that it was common for different families to occupy the same residence. A number after a name (1, 2 or 3) indicates generation. An asterix * before a name indictes involvement in the witchcraft trials.
On the map, these residences are marked with a black roof.
