Eyes of a Blue Dog
by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Now, when she finished speaking, I remained in the corner, sitting, rocking in the chair. 'Every day I try to remember the phrase with which I am to find you,' I said. 'Now I don't think I'll forget it tomorrow. Still, I've always said the same thing and when I wake up I've always forgotten what the words I can find you with are.' And she said: 'You invented them yourself on the first day.' And I said to her: 'I invented them because I saw your eyes of ash. But I never remember the next morning.' And she, with clenched fists, beside the lamp, breathed deeply: 'If you could at least remember now what city I've been writing it in.' We had been seeing each other for several years. Sometimes, when we were already together, somebody would drop a spoon outside and we would wake up. Little by little we'd been coming to understand that our friendship was subordinated to things, to the simplest of happenings. Our meetings always ended that way, with the fall of a spoon early in the morning. Now, next to the lamp, she was looking at me. I remembered that she had also looked at me in that way in the past, from that remote dream where I made the chair spin on its back legs and remained facing a strange woman with ashen eyes. It was in that dream that I asked her for the first time: 'Who are you?' And she said to me: 'I don't remember.' I said to her: 'But I think we've seen each other before.' And she said, indifferently: 'I think I dreamed about you once, about this same room.' And I told her: 'That's it. I'm beginning to remember now.' And she said: 'How strange. It's certain that we've met in other dreams.'

Gabriel Garcia Marquez and His Approach to History in One Hundred Years of Solitude by Maria R. Estorino Biography In 1965, Gabriel Garcia Marquez recovered from his three-year bout of writer's block and practically locked himself up in the study of his Mexico City home. Eighteen months later, he emerged with a thirteen-hundred page manuscript and faced his ten thousand dollar debt. Soon, however, his financial troubles would be over, for One Hundred Years of Solitude the manuscript he produced, went on to become an international success, eventually garnering the author a Nobel Prize in 1982. This work was not the beginning of Garcia Marquez's literary process, but rather a step in the author's career. On the sixth of March in either 1927 or 1928, Gabriel Jose Garcia Marquez was born to Luisa Santiago Marquez and Gabriel Eligio Garcia in Aracataca, a small town just south of Santa Marta, the capital of the department of Magdalena in Colombia. Garcia Marquez's mother was the daughter of Tranquilina Iguaran and Colonel Nicolas Marquez, first cousins who had been in Aracataca since the end of the War of a Thousand Days in which Colonel Marquez fought under the Liberal general Rafael Uribe Uribe. These maternal grandparents had opposed the marriage of their

was born in 1928 in the small town of Aracataca, situated in a tropical region of northern Colombia, between the mountains and the Caribbean Sea. He grew up with his maternal grandparent - his grandfather was a pensioned colonel from the civil war at the beginning of the century. He went to a Jesuit college and began to read law, but his studies were soon broken off for his work as a journalist. In 1954 he was sent to Rome on an assignment for his newspaper, and since then he has mostly lived abroad - in Paris, New York, Barcelona and Mexico - in a more or less compulsory exile. Besides his large output of fiction he has written screenplays and has continued to work as a journalist. Bibliography Cien anos de soledad. Buenos Aires: Ed. Sudamericana, 1967. Gabriel José Garcia Márquez
Gabriel García Márquez, b. March 6, 1928. Colombian novelist, journalist, publisher, and political activist. He has lived mostly in Mexico and Europe. While García Márquez is often considered the most famous of writers of magical realism, and while much of his writing has elements which are strongly associated with magical realism, García Márquez's writing is simply too diverse to be bound within categories. García Márquez got his start as a reporter for the Colombian daily El Espectador , and later worked as a foreign correspondent in Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Caracas, and New York City. His first major work was The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor (Relato de un náufrago) , which he wrote as a newspaper series in 1955. The book told the inglorious true story of a shipwreck that had been glorified by the government. This resulted in the beginning of his foreign correspondence, as it was unsafe for him to remain in Colombia. It was later published in 1970 and taken by many to have been a novel. Several of his works have been classified as both fiction and non-fiction, notably Chronicle of a Death Foretold (Chrónica de una murete anuncida) (1981), which tells the tale of revenge killing in his hometown of Aracataca, and Love in the
