Marlowe, Christopher

http://64.1911encyclopedia.org/M/MA/MARLOWE_CHRISTOPHER.htm
CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE
MARLOWE, CHRISTOPHER Marlowes career as a dramatist lies between the years 1587 and I 593, and the four great plays to which reference has been made were Tamburlaine the Great, an heroic epic in dramatic form divided into two parts of five acts each (1587, printed in 1590); Dr Faustus (1588, entered at Stationers Hall 1601); The Famous Tragedy of the Rich Jew of Malta (dating perhaps from 1589, acted in 1592, printed in 1633); and Edward the Second (printed 1594). The very first words of Tamburlaine sound the trumpet note of attack in the older order of things dramatic From jigging veins of riming mother wits And such conceits as clownage keeps in pay Well lead you to the stately tent of war, Where you shall hear the Scythian Tamburlaine Threatening the world with high astounding terms And scourging kingdoms with his conquering sword. It leapt with a bound to a place beside Kyds Spanish Tragedy, and few plays have been more imitated by rivals (Greenes Aiphonsus of Aragon, Peeles Battle of Alcazar, Selimus, Scanderbeg) or more keenly satirized by the jealousy and prejudice of out-distanced competitors. (T. SE.) It is now a commonplace of criticism to observe and regret the decline of power and interest after the opening acts of The Jew of Malta. This decline is undeniable, though even the latter part of the play (the text of which is very corrupt) is not wanting in rough energy; but the first two acts would be sufficient foundation for the durable fame of a dramatic poet. In the blank verse of Milton alonewho perhaps was hardly less indebted than Shakespeare was before him to Marlowe as the first English master of word-music in its grander formshas the glory or the melody of passages in the opening soliloquy of Barabbas been possibly surpassed. The figure of the hero before it degenerates into caricature is as finely touched as the poetic execution is excellent; and the rude and rapid sketches of the minor characters show at least some vigour and vivacity of touch.

CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE
"Them that love not tobacco and boys are fools." Birthplace

Canterbury, England
Education
The son of a shoemaker, he won a scholarship to Corpus Christi, Cambridge (history, philosophy, theology). His MA was delayed by long absences, possibly spying abroad, and suspicion over his religion.
Other jobs
He was expected to take holy orders after university, but plunged into London's dramatic circle instead - and also, some scholars insist, secret service work abroad for Walsingham, Elizabeth I's secretary of state. He may also have fought in the Low Countries.

Marlowe, Christopher Marlowe, Christopher, , English dramatist and poet, b. Canterbury. Probably the greatest English dramatist before Shakespeare, Marlowe was educated at Cambridge and he went to London in 1587, where he became an actor and dramatist for the Lord Admiral's Company. His most important plays are the two parts of Tamburlaine the Great (c. 1587), Dr. Faustus (c. 1588), The Jew of Malta (c. 1589), and Edward II (c. 1592). Marlowe's dramas have heroic themes, usually centering on a great personality who is destroyed by his own passion and ambition. Although filled with violence, brutality, passion, and bloodshed, Marlowe's plays are never merely sensational. The poetic beauty and dignity of his language raise them to the level of high art. Most authorities detect influences of his work in the Shakespeare canon, notably in Titus Andronicus and King Henry VI. Of his nondramatic pieces, the best-known are the long poem Hero and Leander See his Works and Life The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia,

Christopher Marlowe
British Spy
The celebrated English dramatist Christopher Marlowe was born in Canterbury, the son of a shoemaker. A brilliant child, he was allowed to attend the King's School . He went on to Cambridge University where he graduated in 1584. He then began to pursue his master's degree but his studies were mysteriously interrupted in 1587. That interruption was the undertaking of an espionage assignment. Marlowe had met and befriended Francis Walsingham , who served as secretary of state to Elizabeth I. Walsingham was a crafty, cunning man who established a vast and effective spy network for the protection of his sovereign. He detected many conspiracies and smashed plots to overthrow Elizabeth , including the Throckmorton Conspiracy of 1583, the Anthony Babington plot of 1586, and through his spies he the planned invasion of the Spanish Armada in 1587. In that same year, when Marlowe vanished from Cambridge Walsingham was attempting to detect another conspiracy against Elizabeth headed by her own sister
