Brief biography.

Christopher Marlowe Born the same year as Shakespeare , Christopher Marlowe was to become the first great poet of the theatre's second great age. His life, much like the lives of his characters, would be short and violent. The son of a shoemaker, Marlowe attended King's School, Canterbury and Corpus Christi College where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1584 and his Masters degree three years later. According to university records, Marlowe disappeared frequently during his last years at school, exceeding the number of absences permitted him by statute and putting his degree in jeopardy. Apparently, much of this time was spent in Rheims among the Catholics who were plotting against Queen Elizabeth's protestant regime. Because of his absences and the fact that he refused to take holy orders, the university refused, for a time, to confer his degree, but the authorities intervened, and the degree was eventually granted. Although we cannot be certain, Marlowe may have fought in the wars in the Low Country after graduation. What we can be certain of is that he settled in London in 1587 and began his career as a playwrightalthough he may still have been in the employ of the secret service as well. The young poet plunged himself into a social circle that included such colorful literary figures as Sir Phillip Sidney and Sir Walter Raleigh. He shared a room with fellow playwright

It is difficult to underestimate the poetic and dramatic achievements of Marlowe. Although his career was short, Marlowe wrote plays that applealed to an emerging popular audience and strongly influenced other dramatists. During Marlowe's stay at Camberidge and London he wrote many plays and poems including "Tamburine 1 and 2"," The Jew of Malta "," Edward II", "The Passionate Shepard to his love", "Hero and Leander", "The Tra0gical History of Doctor Faustus", and others.

English dramatist. His father was a shoemaker and his mother was the daughter of a clergy man. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury until he was 15, and then he took a scholarship at Benet (Corpus Christi) College, Cambridge. His Tamburlaine the Great was a considerable improvement on any tragedy that had been produced in England. Although blank verse had been used before he gave it strength and variety. He prepared the way for William Shakespeare. While at Cambridge Christopher Marlowe met Thomas Watson who was visiting the university. They became close friends and made plans to live together after Marlowe's studies. Thomas Watson introduced Christopher Marlowe to Sir Francis Walsingham, the Secretary of State, who operated a network of spies throughout Europe. Marlowe offered his services and he was sent to Rheims where he spied on the Roman Catholic seminary and sent back information on the priests and students who were secretly planning to return to England. Also while at Cambridge Marlowe met Francis Walsingham's nephew, Thomas, who was then about 17. They became close friends and they often spent time together at Thomas's country house, Scadbury, near Chislehurst, Kent.

Doctor Faustus
Doctor Faustus provides an especially interesting example of some of the ways that electronic publication expands the opportunities for scholarly research while increasing access to the play's various editions. Doctor Faustus
From the title page of the 1616 edition In producing this version of Doctor Faustus , we have revised W. W. Greg's 1950 parallel text edition of the two extant versions of Doctor Faustus , the 1604 A text and the 1616 B text. Also included here is the primary source for Doctor Faustus , entitled The English Faust Book and translated from German in 1592 by P. F. Gent. This site allows users with diverse interests and differing degrees of familiarity with Renaissance literature to examine these texts and the intricate relationships between them. Electronic publication makes it possible to view this information in various ways; through its multiple hypertextual links, this site provides immediate access to modernized spelling and punctuation, glossary definitions of terms, scholarly notes, and, in time, will display textual variants in printing. Especially interesting here is the display of the relationships between each version of Doctor Faustus and between the plays and their source.

Don't miss Much Ado Sunday 8.30 pm. April 18th. 2004 ABC TV Much Ado About Something, Mike Rubbo's feature documentary, takes on the controversial Shakespeare authorship question.
Four years of filming and research lead him to propose that Christopher Marlowe might have been the hidden hand behind William Shakespeare. Marlowe as Shakespeare is not a new theory. It was first proposed by Calvin Hoffman in the 1950s.
Mike Rubbo gives it a new lease of life, bringing to the screen: Jonathan Bate, Stanley Wells, Mark Rylance, Andy Gurr, John Baker, John Michell and Charles Nicholl to argue the case with him.

Christopher Marlowe
Born in the same year as William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe was one of the first great dramatists and poets of the Elizabeth Age. After attending Cambridge University, he came to London in 1587, where he joined the Lord Admiral’s Company as an actor and playwright and met such literary figures as Sir Phillip Sidney and Sir Walter Raleigh. The same year he wrote Tamburlaine the Great, a play in blank verse. His other well-known dramas include Dr. Faustus, The Jew of Malta, and Edward II. He also authored the long poem Hero and Leander, which was completed by George Chapman, and “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love.” All of his works are distinguished for their heroic themes, passion, and poetic language. However, none of them brought him much profit, and he grew frustrated with his situation in life. In 1593, at the age of twenty-nine, Marlowe was suspected of heresy but was found dead before he could be brought before the Privy Council. He had been stabbed in a tavern in Deptford, reputedly over a quarrel about the dinner bill. However, some scholars believe that the murder might have been a deliberate plot connected to Marlowe’s activities as a secret government agent. Whatever the case may be, Christopher Marlowe’s contribution to Elizabethan drama was already complete. During his short life, he was able to bring high poetry back to the English stage and pave the way for William Shakespeare himself.

    Marlowe, Christopher
(baptized Feb. 26, 1564, Canterbury, Kent, Eng.d. May 30, 1593, Deptford, near London), Elizabethan poet and Shakespeare's most important predecessor in English drama, who is noted especially for his establishment of dramatic blank verse.
    Early years
Marlowe was the second child and eldest son of John Marlowe, a Canterbury shoemaker. Nothing is known of his first schooling, but on Jan. 14, 1579, he entered the King's School, Canterbury, as a scholar. A year later he went to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Obtaining his bachelor of arts degree in 1584, he continued in residence at Cambridgewhich may imply that he was intending to take Anglican orders. In 1587, however, the university hesitated about granting him the master's degree; its doubts (arising from his frequent absences from the university) were apparently set at rest when the Privy Council sent a letter declaring that he had been employed "on matters touching the benefit of his country"apparently in Elizabeth I's secret service.

OR THE TRAGICAL FATE OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE?
    by
Alfred Barkov To the contents W hen the text of William Shakespeare Hamlet is read attentively, and no details are disregarded, it becomes evident that William Shakespeare included in it something quite different from what has been traditionally interpreted. According to the text, prince Hamlet was not a son to king Hamlet, king Hamlet has never been poisoned, pregnant Ophelia was drowned by prince Hamlet's half-brother. Though that might sound odd, the facts Shakespeare included in the text suggest that the plot of Hamlet has been perceived erroneously. In what we traditionally consider to be the plot of Hamlet , there exist multiple contradictions and discrepancies which cannot be explained within the established interpretation. Even the age of the hero is not known for sure: Hamlet of the Act I is around twenty while in the Act V he appears to be thirty years old. If we really rate Shakespeare's talent that highly as we use to proclaim, we have to exercise a different approach to the contradictions in
