Course Description
This course examines a prominent—yet largely critically neglected—Canadian literary genre: the long poem. From Oliver Goldsmith’s early 19 th Century depiction of Maritime colonial life and traditions in The Rising Village to Robert Kroetsch’s late 20 th Century exploration of Prairie experience in Field Notes and Stephen Scobie’s “speculative biography” of Bob Dylan in And Forget My Name , the Canadian long poem has been a resilient and challenging genre. Key questions to be raised in this course will be why the long (or narrative) poem or poem sequence seems to be somewhat over-represented in Canadian literary history and why literary critics have had difficulties categorizing the long poem generically. The representative Canadian narrative poems on the course reading list are meant to help students place the long poem in a Canadian historical context (both literary history and social/political history). The focus, however, will be on the close reading, analysis and interpretation of the texts themselves.
Course Objectives By the course conclusion, the student will

Taken
by Daphne Marlatt
Ananasi Press,132 pp. However we may pass each moment, our lives become filled with an eclectic mix of experiences and scattered stimuli which vary from the mundane to the sublime. The complete spectrum of these sensations pervade Taken. This short novel deals with women and war. The Gulf War becomes a catalyst to the revelation of scenes of the Pacific theatre in the Second World War. Though interesting, the modern sequences are not as compelling as the mesmerising, though dehumanising, anguish of women captured by the Japanese. Marlatt leads into the latter with fractured but hypnotic passages, triggered at the opening of the novel by the incomplete second sentence. "And she begins to coalesce somewhere behind my eyes, behind the hand over my mouth (my mouth, as if i should not say anything, not yet, not now) staring at space through which those leaves glimmer, alder and fern in the wet earth...." Unfortunately, the idiosyncrasies create sporadic reading difficulties. An author so accomplished at drawing us into her world would have been better served by laying aside some of the obvious, unnecessary, distracting affectation. In the brief second section she simplifies the flow, stays consistent in her approach, and achieves her intent with alacrity. Whenever, in creating strong images in quick succession from multiple directions, Marlatt overcomes obstacles she has set in her own path, the reader is left reeling in a type of trance.
