Some girls want out
Hilary Mantel
The Voices of Gemma Galgani: The Life and Afterlife of a Modern Saint The Disease of Virgins: Green Sickness, Chlorosis and the Problems of Puberty A Wonderful Little Girl: The True Story of Sarah Jacob, the Welsh Fasting Girl We are living through a great era of saint-making. Under John Paul II an industrial revolution has overtaken the Vatican, an age of mass production. Saints are fast-tracked to the top, and there are beatifications by the bucket-load. It seems a shame to have all the virtues required for beatification, but not to get your full name in the Catholic Almanac Online . When the blessed are turned out at such a rate, the most they can hope for is a listing by nationality. In the current listings there are 103 Korean martyrs, 96 Vietnamese martyrs, 122 left over from the Spanish Civil War (with another batch of 45 in their wake), and a hundred-plus who have been hanging around since the French Revolution. And for the canonised, the site lists nine full saints for 2002 alone, though this is a considerable fall-back from the glory days of 1988, when more than a hundred came marching in.

'To Write Myself Into Being': A Profile of Hilary Mantel
Article # : Section : BOOK WORLD Issue Date : 2,751 Words Author : Linda Simon
In her native England, Hilary Mantel is as acclaimed a writer as, for example, Margaret Atwood is on this side of the Atlantic, and for similar reasons: impressive versatility of form and subject matter; gracefully distilled, remarkably incisive prose; and stunningly observant characterizations. Since her first novel, Every Day Is Mother's Day, appeared in 1985, Mantel has published seven other novels; a collection of short stories, essays, reviews; and, most recently, a memoir. All have generated effusive admiration and earned Mantel some of England's most coveted literary prizes: among them, the Shiva Naipaul Memorial Prize (1987), the Winifred Holtby Prize (1990), and the Sunday Express Book of the Year Award (1992).
Although the settings of her fiction have been as diverse as revolutionary France, eighteenth-century Ireland and England, Saudi Arabia and Botswana in the 1960s, and contemporary Britain, Mantel has focused on a few recurring themes: the nature of evil and the problem of faith; the complexities of cultural conflict; the prescience and vulnerability of the outsider; and the connection between a woman's identity and her body. Her interest in these themes is hardly theoretical or arbitrary but instead personal and even urgent. One senses in all of her works that she is exploring unresolved, and perhaps unresolvable, questions generated from the contexts and experiences of her own life.

HILARY MANTEL.
Hilary Mantel, an excellent writer, is the subject of a review by Joyce Carol Oates (not an excellent writer) in the Oct. 23 NYRB ; from it I pluck two excerpts from Mantel's memoir Giving Up the Ghost to show why I like her so much. In the first she is responding to Orwell's "good prose is like a windowpane": The second needs no annotation: Writing about your past is like blundering through your house with the lights fused, a hand flailing for points of reference. You locate the stolid wardrobe, and its door swings open at your touch, opening on the cavern of darkness within. Your hand touches glass, you think it is a mirror, but it is the window. There are obstacles to bump and trip you, but what is more disconcerting is a sudden empty space, where you can't find a handhold and you know that you are stranded in the dark. The first section of the book, about her early childhood, is online here . Enjoy. Posted by languagehat at November 6, 2003 02:21 PM
