24. Thomas Mann - Autobiography
thomas mann – Autobiography. I was born in Lübeck on June Biographical note on thomas mann. thomas mann (18751955) moved to Switzerland
http://www.nobel.se/literature/laureates/1929/mann-autobio.html
When I was fifteen, my father died, a comparatively young man. The firm was liquidated. A little later my mother left the town with the younger children in order to settle in the south of Germany, in Munich.
After finishing school rather ingloriously, I followed her and for the time being became a clerk in the office of a Munich insurance company whose director had been a friend of my father's. Later, by way of preparing for a career in journalism, I attended lectures in history, economics, art history, and literature at the university and the polytechnic. In between I spent a year in Italy with my brother Heinrich, my elder by four years. During this time my first collection of short stories, Der kleine Herr Friedemann Little Herr Friedemann ], was published. In Rome, I also began to write the novel Buddenbrooks , which appeared in 1901 and which since then has been such a favourite with the German public that today over a million copies of it are in circulation.

    Mann, Thomas Death in Venice
Genre Novella (73 pp.) Keywords Aging Body Self-Image Death and Dying Epidemics ... Sexuality Summary Gustave Aschenbach, renowned German scholar and historian, reaches a crisis in his previously austere and celibate life. Exhausted from the pressures and the seemingly sterile quality of his aesthetic endeavors, he seeks respite and pleasure. Through a series of misadventures, he eventually arrives in the summer city of Venice, a city he knows and has always longed to visit again. The reader observes the progressive moral alteration in the rigidly self-controlled man as he succumbs to his long repressed desire to experience the types of passion that art, rather than reason, allows. His transformation extends to the worship of a beautiful young boyAschenbach's vision of a doomed Greek god. As Aschenbach becomes progressively obsessed with his longing, he assumes the role of a lover gone amok. Venice is under siege by a plague, and given the chance to escapeand to warn his object's Polish family of his knowledge about the dangers facing them allhe chooses to take the ultimate risk of death rather than give up his passionate obsession.

Mann, Thomas (1875-1955) German novelist and critic, one of the most important figures in early 20th-century literature, whose novels explore the relationship between the exceptional individual and his or her environment, either the environment of family or of the world in general. Mann, the younger brother of the novelist and playwright Heinrich Mann, was born into an old merchant family in L[[cedilla]]beck on June 6, 1875. After his father died, the family moved to Munich, where Mann was educated. He was a clerk in an insurance office in Munich and served on the staff of the Munich satiric journal Simplicissimus, before taking up writing as a career. He was influenced by two German philosophers, Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche, although he rejected the ideas of the latter. In one of his later critical works, Essays of Three Decades (1947), he discussed his literary themes as influenced by these thinkers and other artists. Mann's fiction is characterized by accurate reproduction of the details of both modern and ancient life, by profound and subtle intellectual analysis of ideas and characters, and by a detached, somewhat ironic, point of view combined with a deep sense of the tragic. His heroes are often of the bourgeois class, undergoing a spiritual conflict. Mann explored also the psychology of the creative artist. Source: Encarta 1994
