Add to a Notebook Osip Mandelstam Born in January, 1891, in Warsaw, Poland, Osip Emilievich Mandelstam was raised in the imperial capital of St. Petersburg, Russia. His father was a prominent leather merchant and his mother a teacher of music. Mandelstam attended the renowned Tenishev School and later studied at the Sorbonne, the University of Heidelburg, and the University of St. Petersburg, though he left off his studies to pursue writing. He published his first collection, Kamen, or Stone (1913), when Russian Symbolism was the dominant persuasion. Like Mayakovsky and Khlebnikov, who cleared the ground for Russian Futurism, Mandelstam departed from this old mode of expression in favor of a more direct treatment of thoughts, feelings, and observations under the aegis of Acmeism, a programme that included Nikolay Gumilev and Anna Akhmatova . As translator Clarence Brown observes, Mandelstam's variant of Acmeism was a mixture of poetics and moral doctrine, the former based on an "intuitive and purely verbal logic of inner association" and the latter on a kind of "democratic humanism." His second book, Tristia (1922), secured his reputation, and both it and

Nadezdha and Osip Mandelstam
Nadezhda Mandelstam
Nadezhda means "hope" in Russian, and for the wife of one of the greatest Russian poets of the 20th century, Osip Mandelstam, Nadezhda needed to hang on to it for survival. Her memoirs, published as Hope Against Hope, are a harrowing account of the years in which her husband, Osip, was persecuted by the Soviet authorities.  She recreates the atmosphere of intense paranoia that enveloped Russia's literary intelligentsia. In 1933 Osip had written a poem ridiculing Stalin. It proved to be a 16-line death sentence. Osip was arrested, interrogated, exiled and eventually re-arrested.
Osip Mandelstam
Most of Osip Mandelstam’s works went unpublished in the Soviet Union during the Stalin era (1929-53) and were almost unknown outside that country until the mid-1960s. Mandelstam grew up in St. Petersburg in a cultured Jewish household. Together with Nikolay Gumilyov and Anna Akhmatova, Mandelshtam founded the Acmeist school of poetry, which rejected the mysticism and abstraction of Russian Symbolism. During the Russian Civil War (1918-20), Mandelstam spent time in the Crimea and Georgia. In 1922 he moved to Moscow, where his second volume of poetry appeared. He married Nadezhda in 1922.

Simon Karlinsky
The New York Times Book Review In Mandelstam, Russian poetry at last has a poet of stature comparable to Pushkin's a claim that even the most fanatical admirers of Blok, Mayakovsky or Pasternak would not dream of making. Robert Kelly
author of Russian Tales and The Scorpions It is not enough to say that McClelland's translations of Mandelstam are American poems, and good ones. Good translations are possibly only in, and become interesting evidence of, powerful phrases in the history of poetry. McClelland the poet knows how to reveal Mandelstam the poet through these fresh translations, that are strong in themselves because they manifest the rich complexity of means and meanings discovered by the new American poetics. Harlow Robinson
author of Sergie Prokofiev: A Biography Bruce McClelland's sensitive and scrupulous translations of some of the most important poems of the twentieth century exhibit considerable poetic talents as well as an affectionate understanding of the Russian language. Mandelstam himself would be gratified to read them. Titles and Authors in this Catalogue are arranged in Alphabetical Order.

‘Only to read childrens’ books’ ‘On the pale-blue enamel’ ‘What shall I do with this body they gave me,’ ‘A speechless sadness’ ... Index by First Line
‘Only to read childrens’ books’
Only to read childrens’ books,
only to love childish things, throwing away adult things, rising from saddest looks. I am wearied to death with life. There’s nothing it has that I want, but I celebrate my naked earth, there’s no other world to descant. A plain swing of wood; the dark, of the high fir-tree, in the far-off garden, swinging; remembered by feverish blood.
‘On the pale-blue enamel’
On the pale-blue enamel, that April can bring, birch branches’ imperceptible sway, slipped towards evening. A network of finely etched lines, is the pattern’s finished state, the carefully-made design, like that on a porcelain plate, the thoughtful artist set, on the glazed firmament, oblivious to sad death, knowing ephemeral strength.
‘What shall I do with this body they gave me,’
What shall I do with this body they gave me,
so much my own, so intimate with me?

Osip Mandelstam and the Modernist Creation of Tradition
Clare Cavanagh
Shopping Cart Reviews Table of Contents If modernism marked, as some critics claim, an "apocalypse of cultural community," then Osip Mandelstam (1891-1938) must rank among its most representative figures. Born to Central European Jews in Warsaw on the cusp of the modern age, he could claim neither Russian nor European traditions as his birthright. Describing the poetic movement he helped to found, Acmeism, as a "yearning for world culture," he defined the impulse that charges his own poetry and prose. Clare Cavanagh has written a sustained study placing Mandelstam's "remembrance and invention" of a usable poetic past in the context of modernist writing in general, with particular attention to the work of T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. Cavanagh traces Mandelstam's creation of tradition from his earliest lyrics to his last verses, written shortly before his arrest and subsequent death in a Stalinist camp. Her work shows how the poet, generalizing from his own dilemmas and disruptions, addressed his epoch's paradoxical legacy of disinheritanceand how he responded to this unwelcome legacy with one of modernism's most complex, ambitious, and challenging visions of tradition. Drawing on not only Russian and Western modernist writing and theory, but also modern European Jewish culture, Russian religious thought, postrevolutionary politics, and even silent film, Cavanagh traces Mandelstam's recovery of a "world culture" vital, vast, and varied enough to satisfy the desires of the quintessential outcast modernist.
