(Wotton 1766 - Bath 1834). Economista politico e demografo britannico.

Malthus, Thomas An Essay on the Principle of Population (1st Edition) . Introduction by Samuel Hollander. Distributed for the Thoemmes Continuum. 1798 Edition. 463 p. 1798 , 1999 Cloth CUSA $120.00tx 1-85506-781-1 An Essay on the Principle of Population by Thomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) is one of the most influential and controversial books in the history of social and economic thought. First published anonymously in 1798, and the result of a discussion with his father on the perfectibility of society, it was originally intended as a response to ideas developed in Godwin's Enquirer and Political Justice . The essay is based around Malthus's famous principle of population: that as population increases geometrically, pressure is placed on the earth's agricultural resources, which can only increase at an arithmetic rate; hence Malthus's prediction of mass starvation. His argument further maintained that population is prevented from increasing beyond the food supply by positive (war, famine and pestilence) and preventive (abortions, infanticides and birth control) checks. The principle was and remains one of the most widely debated of modern economic theories. These volumes reveal all the major and minor changes Malthus made in the Essay in the twenty-eight years that separate the appearance of the first and sixth editions. Considered cumulatively, these reworkings show the progression and modification of Malthus's thinking in the light of the hostile criticism and lively debate it provoked.

Malthus, Thomas Robert (1766 – 1834), political economist He was educated by his father, at Warrington dissenting academy and Jesus College Cambridge : he got an N.A. I 1791. In 1798 he was a curate at Albury, Surrey. He published, in 1798, his “Essay on Population” in which he laid down that population increases in geometrical, and subsistence in arithmetical proportion only, and argued the necessity of “checks” on population in order to reduce vice and misery. He travelled abroad in 1799 and 1802 ( Schweden, Norwegen, Rußland, Lappland). He got a professorship at Haileybury College in 1805 for history and political economy and in 1815 published “The nature and progress of Rent”, in which he laid down doctrines generally accepted by later economists. He became a member of foreign academies. First census 1801. He supported factory acts and national education, disapproved of the poor laws, and generally had a great influence on the development of political economy. (from National Biography, Concise) zurück

    Book Description

As the world's population continues to grow at a frighteningly rapid rate, Malthus's classic warning against overpopulation gains increasing importance. An Essay on the Principle of Population (1798) examines the tendency of human numbers to outstrip their resources, and argues that checks in the form of poverty, disease, and starvation are necessary to keep societies from moving beyond their means of subsistence. Malthus's simple but powerful argument was controversial in his time; today his name has become a byword for active concern about humankind's demographic and ecological prospects.

    Thomas Robert Malthus
    February 13, 1766-December 29, 1834
Perhaps nothing in all of history has had as devastating an impact on social relations as Thomas Malthus's Essay on the Principle of Population , which was published in six editions between 1798 and 1826. Malthus, ironically, was one of eight children born just south of London to an aristocratic family. He studied at Oxford, and subsequently became a parson in the Church of England. He taught political science at Haileybury College, a school established specifically to train public officials for service with the imperial British East India Company.
In his population essay, Malthus made three basic points: first , he claimed human population tends to increase by multiplication; second , he argued that the means of sustenance for human population increases only incrementally, as in addition, thereby having a slower rate of natural increase than population; and, third , he contended that the rate of population growth should be restricted in order that it be balanced with food production, saying that, were this not done, nature would eliminate what he called the "redundant" people through hunger or disease.
Birth control did not exist in Malthus's time, which begs the question as to
