Malthus, Thomas Robert
born Feb. 14/17, 1766, Rookery, near Dorking, Surrey, Eng.
died Dec. 23, 1834, St. Catherine, near Bath, Somerset English economist and demographer, best known for his theory that population growth will always tend to outrun the food supply and that betterment of the lot of mankind is impossible without stern limits on reproduction. Malthus was of a prosperous family. His father, a personal friend of the philosopher and skeptic David Hume, was an ardent disciple of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose book The opinions and teachings that Malthus developed reflect largely a reaction, amiably conducted, to his father's views and to the doctrines of the French Revolution and its supporters. The English radical philosopher William Godwin , for example, was being widely read for such works as Political Justice (1793), which took for granted the perfectibility of mankind and foresaw a millennium in which rational men would live prosperously and harmoniously without laws and institutions. Unlike Godwin (or, earlier, Rousseau), who viewed human affairs from a theoretical standpoint, Malthus was essentially an empiricist, and he began from the harsh realities of his time. His reaction developed in the tradition of British economics, which would today be called sociological. In 1798 he published anonymously the first edition of An Essay on the Principle of Population as it affects the Future Improvement of Society, with Remarks on the Speculations of Mr. Godwin, M. Condorcet, and other Writers.

His fame rested on what was in effect a long pamphlet, An Essay on the Principle of Population, As It Affects the Future Improvement of Society (1798), in which he observed that the growth of population is ultimately limited by the food supply. He supported this common thesis with the metaphor that population, when allowed to increase without limit, increases in a geometrical ratio, while the food supply can at best increase in an arithmetical But the powerful impact of the Essay derived as much from its stark implications as from the thesis itself. Poverty had its roots, not in social and political institutions, but in the unequal race between population and the food supply. Nothing could stem the tide of numbers except the voluntary limitation of family size by the poor themselves. Thus, at one stroke, Malthus accounted for the existence of poverty and provided a touchstone for every question of policy relating to the labouring poor

Malthus, Thomas Robert English economist. His Essay on the Principle of Population 1798 (revised 1803) argued for population control, since populations increase in geometric ratio and food supply only in arithmetic ratio, and influenced Charles Darwin's thinking on natural selection as the driving force of evolution.
Malthus saw war, famine, and disease as necessary checks on population growth. Later editions of his work suggested that 'moral restraint' (delaying marriage, with sexual abstinence before it) could also keep numbers from increasing too quickly, a statement seized on by later birth-control pioneers (the 'neo-Malthusians').
Malthus was born near Dorking, Surrey, studied at Cambridge and became a cleric. In 1805 he became professor of history and political economy at Haileybury College.
Now it is accepted that Malthus was probably correct up to a point. Populations throughout the plant and animal kingdoms also tend to increase faster than the resources to support them until some check builds up sufficiently. After reading Malthus's work, Darwin postulated that the transformation or extinction of species depends on their response (a function of variability) to changing environmental factors.
Malthus's main books on economics are An Inquiry into the Nature and Progress of Rent 1815 and Principles of Political Economy 1820.
