Interview with David Malouf
Helen Daniel talks to David Malouf about The Conversations at Curlow Creek
and other matters such as God and paganism and the sacred.
HELEN DANIEL: In his review of Curlow Creek in Australian Book Review Nick Jose talks about the operatic qualities of the novel. Were you conscious of this operatic form while you were writing? DAVID MALOUF: Operatic is probably not the word I'd first have used. Musical, I think that's certainly true. But I think that's true of the way all my books are shaped. I don't usually think of the forward drive of the book as having to do with plot, but with exploration of things which are announced first, sometimes almost like metaphors in a poem, say. You then explore both ends of the metaphor and let those spawn other oppositions, other comparisons, and then explore those. I think that's the way almost all my books work, and I think I learned really to shape a novel the way I'd learned to shape a poem. I sometimes referred in the past to the books therefore having a kind of poetical structure in that kind of way, or musical, if one wanted to say that. Certainly in this book there are a number of operatic references. Adair's parents have been opera singers and I was deliberately, playfully, dealing with that to this extent that he doesn't see any relationship between his own temperament and what he assumes must have been their artistic and operatic temperament. That's a little bit of play about where character comes from, the extent to which we are determined or separate and self-shaping.

Dream Stuff
- Book Review, by Malouf, David
Amazon.com

The Australian writer David Malouf, best noted for An Imaginary Life and Remembering Babylon, is a master of restraint. In Dream Stuff, he gives us a cast of lost Antipodeans. "Sally's Story" features a kind of homey prostitute to American GIs during the Vietnam War. She offers soldiers not just sex but "an illusion of domestic felicity in the form of a soft-mouthed girl and the sort of walk-up city-style living that is represented by an intercom and a prohibition against the playing of loud music after eleven o'clock." Sally does not think this arrangement "would be damaging," but, the author tells us, "she was wrong." No further commentary is granted us, nor is this woman allowed much more interiority. Malouf falls firmly into the show-don't-tell camp. In the end, what he shows us is Sally doing just what her GIs do: she seeks refuge in a strange man's domestic arrangements. Another refugee is Colin, the novelist protagonist of the title story. Upon his mother's death, this Londoner returns to his native Brisbane. In "half a dozen fictions," he has recalled the Brisbane of his youth, "the density of tropical vegetation, timber soft to the thumb, the drumming of rain on corrugated-iron roofs." Alas, what he finds instead, is a "new addiction to metal and glass." The home he has plundered for his writing is gone, except, of course, in his writing. He is further displaced by circumstance: he lands, improbably, in jail. Malouf writes again and again of the way adult life necessarily distances us from the dream stuff of childhood. His characters ping back and forth between past and present, unable to rest. Maybe this is a theme especially haunting in Australia, with its literal watery distance from everywhere else. At any rate, Malouf's Australians demand careful reading. When we pay attention, we start to feel unsettled too. Claire Dederer

What the critics say about David Malouf
“An exceptionally diverse writer, Malouf is concerned with certain fundamental, consistent, and unifying themes: the relationships between past and present, continuity and change, animal and human, and the role of language as a mediator of experience. Drawn by the force of his own early experience, and regional in his preoccupations in that much of his poetry and fiction recreates his childhood in Brisbane, Malouf is nevertheless thoroughly European in
his interests and attitudes.” The Oxford Companion to Australian Literature . Eds. William H. Wilde, Joy Hooton, and Barry Andrews. Oxford: Oxford UP, 1985.
About Remembering Babylon
“Despite his love of the sensible universe, Malouf explores how we wither into meaning, if not truth. This stripping action takes an uncanny turn in Remembering Babylon (1993). A historical incident again provides the cue: a blond English boy, raised by Aborigines for sixteen years, rejoins colonial society . . . He had appeared at the edge of a white settlement, a spindly scarecrow thing, shouting: “Do not shoot. I am a B-b-british object.” Subject and object in the novel, self and other, all those lines that language draws, cross and recross in a haunting fictional meditation, colored by the harsh sublime.” Ihab Hassan
