Explorations in Arthurian Legends A Literature Review Part 6: Sir Thomas Malory One author who definitely echoed the signs of his times in his Arthurian writings was Sir Thomas Malory. Arthur looks a bit like Henry V, who was king at the time Malory was writing; and Arthur's route through France echoes Henry's moves toward Agincourt. The action, of course, takes place against the backdrop of King Arthur's Court, which Malory places at Winchester . The ideas of chivalry and courtly love are in full flower here, as they were in other stories in England in the 15th century. Did he intend his tales to be one cycle, echoing the styles of Robert de Boron and the Vulgate authors, or did he write tales one at a time and then decide later on that an effort at unification was necessary? No one knows for sure. Another raging debate among scholars is which Thomas Malory wrote the works? Four men of that name are possible suspects; the one from Warwickshire (despite his prison convictions) is believed to be the author. Whoever he was and whatever his intentions, "Malory" left us with a large body of work, which, taken together, comprise quite possibly one of the finest works ever written in the English language. Malory was writing in the right place at the right time. The printing press was just making its way to England, and a man named

65. SIR THOMAS MALORY
malory, SIR thomas, translator and compiler of the famous English classic, the Morte dArthur. Previous to Kittredges mono. SIR thomas malory.

SIR THOMAS MALORY
MALORY, SIR THOMAS It is interesting to note that the career of the earl of Warwick in France was maFked by certain picturesque and chivalric features which might well impress the imagination of a young retainer. John Rous, in his Life of Richard Earl of Warwick, tells us that at a certain tourney held near Calais at Christmastide, Earl Richard appeared three days running in different armour, overthrowing his adversary on each occasionan exploit obviously imitated from the chivalric romances of the period. From the point of view of matter it must be admitted that the Monte d Arthur does not represent the Arthurian cycle at its best, but rather in the period of its decadence; nor does Malory in any way endeavour to overcome the difficulties caused by the juxtaposition of a number of independent (and often contradictory) versions. This is especially noticeable in his treatment of Gawain; in the section derived from the Lancelot and Mort Artus he is a good and valiant knight, a ful noble knyghte as ever was borne1 in those derived from the Tristan and the Queste, he is treacherous, dissolute, and a murderer of good knights. The great charm of Malorys work lies in his style; stately, earnest and dignified, it has lent to the relations between Lancelot and Guenevere a character of truth and vitality in which the French original is wholly lacking. Malory achieved a remarkable feathe took the Arthurian story in its worst and weakest form and he imparted to it a moral force and elevation which the cycle, even in its earlier and finer stage, had, save in the unique case of Von Eschenbachs Parzival, never possessed. While genuine lovers of the Arthurian cycle must regret that the romances should only be known to the great majority of English readers through the versions of Malory and Tennyson, it isimpossible to withholdfrom the Monte dArt hut the admiration due to an imperishable monument of English language and literature.

England's first printer was more than a printer: in his preface to The Order of Chivalry , a practical book on knight-errantry to go with Malory's Romance, Caxton complains that the knights of his day are altogether too un-Arthurian, spending far too much time at brothels, dice and "taking ease." top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR No books are presently listed for Sir Thomas Malory in this category. According to Caxton, "Le Morte Darthur" was written while Malory was in prison. It is known that a rebel, Sir Thomas Malory of Newbold Revel in Warwickshire, was confined at London's Newgate prison after his disputes with the local priory, related to Lancastrian-Yorkist politics. Indeed, early in the text of "Le Morte Darthur", the author refers to himself as a knight-prisoner. He also mentions that he loves chivalry, hunting, tournaments, and had read an extensive collection of Arthurian romances. Of Le Morte d'Arthur, edited by Claxton, only one complete copy is left. A manuscript, edited by Eugene Vinaver in 1947, was discovered at Winchester College in 1934. This Author's titles If you wish further information about this author, please enter

So whichever Malory wrote the Morte d'Arthur , he was certainly working in the unsettled years of the War of the Roses , in which the great ducal families of York and Lancaster battled for control of the English throne. As one family gained dominance, adherents of the other were often jailed on flimsy charges. The spectacle of a nation threatening to crumble into clan warfare provides much of the thematic weight of the Morte Darthur, while the declining chivalric order of the later fifteenth century underlies Malory's increasingly elegiac tone. Whether he gained his remarkable knowledge of French and English Arthurian tradition in or out of jail, Malory infused his version of these stories with a darkening perspective very much his own. Malory sensed the high aspirations, especially the bonds of honor and fellowship in battle, that held together Arthur's realm. Yet he was also bleakly aware of how tenuous those bonds were and how easily undone by tragically competing pressures. These include the centuries-old Arthurian preoccupation with transgressive love, but Malory is more concerned with the conflicting claims of loyalty to clan or king, the urge to avenge the death of a fellow knight, and the resulting alienation even among the best of knights. Still more unnerving, agents of a virtually unmotivated or unexplained malice have ever more impact as the
