Clarence Major and His Art

Portraits of an African American Postmodernist
Edited by Bernard W. Bell
Introduction.
Although Clarence Major's poetry is known in some circles and his novels in others, the full range of his work is neither widely known nor generally taught, even in black institutions. Poet, novelist, essayist, editor, anthologist, lexicographer, and painter, Major is one of the most compelling, challenging, prolific, and multitalented contemporary American artists of African descent. Inspired as a teenager by the impressionistic paintings of van Gogh and the symbolist poetry of Rimbaud, as well as by such black writers as Jean Toomer, Richard Wright, Chester Himes, and Willard Motley, Major has produced a collection of art whose trajectory suggests the complex dynamics of his transgressive voice and double consciousness as an African American postmodernist artist. By transgressive I mean boldly moving beyond traditional literary limits and cultural boundaries in experimenting with different, occasionally multiple, narrative voices. Although

Bell Poet, novelist, essayist, editor, anthologist, lexicographer, and painter, Clarence Major is one of the most challenging, prolific, yet underappreciated contemporary African American artists. This collection combines poetry, prose, and art by Major with critical essays by leading scholars that showcase Major's aesthetic movement across literary, cultural, and political boundaries and illuminate the complex relationship between the artist's writing and painting. Although Major's artistic vision is grounded in the historical experiences of black and Native American peoples, he boldly experiments with crossing boundaries of all types. His use of different narrative voices is evidence of what editor Bernard Bell calls Major's "double consciousness" as an African American artist. This collection highlights the breadth of Major's work, his transformation into a postmodern artist, and the hybrid voices of his literary and visual productions. By presenting Major's poetry, novels, and paintings alongside critical interpretations of these works, this book makes possible a long-overdue examination of a multitalented artist.

African American Review
Summer, 1999 by Linda Furgerson Selzer
I. "Hope, Hope, Fallacious Hope / Where is Your Market, Now?" - J. M. W. Turner, from a poem displayed with his painting The Slave Ship (1840)(1) . . . Mfu, like a tree, is totally without judgment or ambition, suspended between going and coming in no need of even nutrition - gray, eternal - and therefore able to see, hear and know how to shape memory into a thing of wholeness (13) Assuming the positionality of a mid-Atlantic suicide who preferred death to slavery, the implied author attempts to make "a thing of wholeness" out of the fragmented past of the black diaspora. The attempt itself is suggestive of a tenuously held hope that the individual need not be overwhelmed by the weight of slavery's history. Indeed, from his unique mid-Atlantic position, Mfu is able to look "generously in all directions" in search of a "festive reason / something that might have slipped" (11). The African searches, essentially, for a reason to affirm life in the face of the historical reality of slavery - a reason he might have overlooked before.

African American Review
Summer-Fall, 2003 by Jerome Klinkowitz
Jackson: UP of Mississippi, 2002. 193 pp. $46.00 cloth/$18.00 paper. In his talks with college students during the 1970sparticularly with white, middle-class students from nonurban areas of the Middle WestClarence Major would warn them of how writing by African Americans had often been accepted into America's literary canon for well intentioned but essentially wrong reasons. Yes, these sincere young readers knew about Jean Toomer, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, and James Baldwin. But wasn't that all they knew? Could it be that their culture was letting them experience just one black writer at a time? And didn't it seem like any African American who wrote a book was regarded, however sympathetically, as an "anthropological curiosity"oh, how he must have suffered! In working the campuses so effectively thirty years ago, Major succeeded in knocking down these stereotypes and many others, including those of a single "black aesthetic" and a monological approach to subject and form. Over these same three decades he built up his own canon of literary work that has qualified him as one of the most important writers of our era. Which leads any good interviewer to a key question: Now that the author has it made, with many of the causes he fought for won, is there less to fuel his imagination and more to make him comfortable with the status quo?

Conversations with Clarence Major
Edited by Nancy Bunge
"I like to create dreams in fiction and I think that writing good fiction can be a way of constructing interesting dreams."
Photo credit: Lynda Koolish For over forty years, Clarence Major (b. 1936) has engaged several artistic and literary pursuits, garnering acclaim for his paintings, edited anthologies, poetry collections, essays, and novels. His work within literature ranges from his popular dictionary of slang, Juba to Jive: A Dictionary of African-American Slang (1994), to such experimental novels as Emergency Exit Reflex and Bone Structure (1975), and My Amputations (1986). He has gained a reputation as one of America's most visionary and experimental African American writers. In Conversations with Clarence Major , the author comments thoughtfully on the diverse nature of his work. Major explores his influences, the methods he applies to the different types of writing he does, and his childhood in Atlanta and Chicago's South Side. The same openness and curiosity that make his work so various and rich allow Major to focus on and respond to each interviewer's concerns. Journalists, scholars, and show hosts pose questions about particular works, about the different ways Major creates, about his teaching of writing, about his views of nature, and about youth.
