For Mailer is part of a post-World War II generation of U.S. writers — along with Gore Vidal, Truman Capote and others — who became known as widely for their media appearances as for their literary works. But Mailer has also produced a very large body of work. Will some of it stand the test of time as well as have the works of the famous American expatriate writers from Callaghan's time earlier in the century? Mailer himself once measured himself against Hemingway although his style is quite different. Normal Mailer was born in New Jersey and studied at Harvard. He was drafted in 1944 and served in the Pacific during the war. He used his battle experience to create his first novel The Naked and the Dead (1948) which became a bestseller, making Mailer one of the first big American writers to emerge from the war.

The Naked and The Dead
Norman Mailer's Greatest Work - First Edition Mailer, Norman
NAKED AND THE DEAD New York Rinehart and Co 1948 First edition, later issue. 8vo, original black cloth printed in white, in the original pictorial dustjacket. 721. A very handsome and bright copy with only minor or occasional light rubbing or edgewear to a few of the jacket edges. Arguably, Mailer has never surpassed the artistry exhibited in this, his first book. Long considered one of the best novels to come out of World War II, it caused a sensation on its initial publication; critics compared the 25-year-old author to Tolstoy and catapulted him to instant literary celebrity.
Mailer uses extensive flashbacks and brutally frank battle scenes to tell the story of General Cummings' invasion of a Japanese-held island in the South Pacific. Believing that "the morality of the future is a power morality," Cummings runs into opposition from Lieutenant Hearn, who refuses to fit into the general's "fear ladder."
This is a highly desirable first edition of an American classic, complete with original dustjacket and in unusually nice condition.

American Prose Since 1945: Realism and Experimentation: Norman Mailer (1923- )
Index Norman Mailer is generally considered the representative author of recent decades, able to change his style and subject many times. In his appetite for experience, vigorous style, and dramatic public persona, he follows in the tradition of Ernest Hemingway. His ideas are bold and innovative. He is the reverse of a writer like Barth, for whom the subject is not as important as the way it is handled. Unlike the invisible Pynchon, Mailer constantly courts and demands attention. A novelist, essayist, sometime politician, literary activist, and occasional actor, he is always on the scene. From such "New Journalism" exercises as Miami and the Siege of Chicago (1968), an analysis of the 1968 U.S. presidential conventions, and his compelling study about the execution of a condemned murderer, The Executioner's Song (1979), he has turned to writing such ambitious, heavyweight novels as

Mary V. Dearborn
"Hemingway gets the first half of the century, [Mailer] gets the second." interviewed by Ron Hogan
Mary V. Dearborn's Mailer is the first major biography of Norman Mailer in about a decade; it's also one of the best, period. Dearborn is equally adept at discussing the significance of Mailer's prodigious literary output and delineating the narrative of his life and, as is particularly necessary in Mailer's case, showing how the two intertwine. Her portrait of Mailer ultimately flatters his uncontested significance, but does not skimp on its depiction of his darker side. Having written about Mailer and Henry Miller, Dearborn envisions an eventual book about Ernest Hemingway. "I guess the common denominator is fairly obvious; I want to look at [20th-century American literature's] three most macho men through the eyes of a woman and a feminist. But these are not feminist screeds. You can't just write Miller or Mailer off as sexists. In most cases, it's much more complicated than that." But she says that she'll need a break before taking on the Hemingway book, just as, between Miller and Mailer, she shifted gears to write about Louise Bryant. " Queen of Bohemia is my favorite of my books," she reminisces. "She's definitely not a major figure. People know who she was, because she was popularized as the Diane Keaton figure in

Norman Mailer, Gary Gilmore, and the Untold Stories of the Law
Simon Petch Early in the morning of Wednesday July 21 1976 Gary Gilmore was arrested in Provo, Utah, on suspicion of the murder of a motel owner in Provo on the previous Tuesday evening, and of a gas station attendant, in nearby Orem, on the Monday night. At the time of the killings Gilmore was on parole from a twelve-year sentence for armed robbery, and was being harboured by relatives. He was effectively turned in by his cousin Brenda Nicol, who told him, by way of explanation: "You commit a murder Monday, and commit a murder Tuesday. I wasn't waiting for Wednesday to come around". In October of the same year Gilmore was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. Offered a choice as to the mode of execution, he opted to be shot. Both victims had been Mormon, and, in the opinion of his brother Mikal, Gary exercised his choice in knowing fulfillment of the Mormon doctrine of Blood Atonement. The sentence was carried out six months after the murders: on Monday January 17 1977, a few minutes after 8am local time, Gary Gilmore was executed by firing squad in a disused cannery in Utah State prison. It was the first judicial homicide in the United States for ten years, and it had not, from a legal point of view, been easy to organise.

Picasso som ung
Biografi och personlig tolkning
Denna titel har utgått. ISBN: Utkom:
Men trots hans framskjutna plats i konsthistorien har kritikerna sällan lyckats riktigt fånga in honom.
