The White Man Unburdened
By Norman Mailer
Exeunt: lightning and thunder, shock and awe. Dust, ash, fog, fire, smoke, sand, blood, and a good deal of waste now move to the wings. The stage, however, remains occupied. The question posed at curtain-rise has not been answered. Why did we go to war? If no real weapons of mass destruction are found, the question will keen in pitch. Or, if some weapons are uncovered in Iraq, it is likely that even more have been moved to new hiding places beyond the Iraqi border. Should horrific events take place, we can count on a predictable response: "Good, honest, innocent Americans died today because of evil al-Qaeda terrorists." Yes, we will hear the President's voice before he even utters such words. (For those of us who are not happy with George W. Bush, we may as well recognize that living with him in the Oval Office is like being married to a mate who always says exactly what you know in advance he or she is going to say, which helps to account for why more than half of America now appears to love him.) The administration, however, was concerned only with how best to expedite the war. They hastened to look for many a justifiable reason. The Iraqis were a nuclear threat; they were teeming with weapons of mass destruction; they were working closely with al-Qaeda; they had even been the dirty geniuses behind 9/11. The reasons offered to the American public proved skimpy, unverifiable, and void of the realpolitik of our need to get a choke-hold on the Middle East for many a reason more than Israel- Palestine. We had to sell the war on false pretenses.

"I Am Not For World Empire" A conversation with Norman Mailer about Iraq, Israel, the perils of technology and why he is a Left-Conservative.
The vagaries of literary reputation are not the main beat of The American Conservative, What follows is a conversation about what most interested the four of us on that day, as well as an addendum Mailer wrote later. We spoke of the present and future more than the past: a mixture of politics (Iraq, the imperial urge, styles of conservatism) and more typically Maileresque themes (the problem of technology). After several hours of talk and the gracious hospitality of Norris Church Mailer we made our way back to normal life, not doubting that we had spent an extraordinary afternoon with the greatest living American writer. AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE: NORMAN MAILER: (Terry Quinn, co-author) in six capitals over two visits. I think that is a part of it. Americans need mythos, certainly, in the literary world. Nationally, we have Abraham Lincoln and George Washington and FDR and Camelot, and in some quarters I fear there is Ronald Reagan, but nonetheless, in the literary world, it is probably Hemingway and Fitzgerald and Zelda, the nearest thing to a literary mythos within living reach. People take to it. AC: Why do you think so? Because they are good, but not necessarily the best.

Mailer, Norman Mailer, Norman, The Naked and the Dead (1948), one of the most significant novels to emerge from the war. His next two novels, Barbary Shore (1951) and The Deer Park (1955), were generally considered failures. More successful was An American Dream (1966), an exploration of sex, violence, and death in America through the experiences of his semiautobiographical protagonist. The Armies of the Night Miami and the Siege of Chicago A Fire on the Moon (1971), an account of the Apollo 11 moon flight, and The Executioner's Song (1979, Pulitzer Prize), on the life and execution of killer Gary Gilmore. The Prisoner of Sex Oswald's Tale (1995), a study of the life of President Kennedy's assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald , and Portrait of Picasso as a Young Man (1995), on the youth of Pablo Picasso Several recent novels have been long and intricate and have met with decidedly mixed reviews: Ancient Evenings (1983) is set in pharaonic Egypt; Harlot's Ghost (1991) is a complex cold-war spy novel. A shorter detective novel, Tough Guys Don't Dance (1984), was made into a film in 1985. Among his other works are

E-Mail This Article Published on Tuesday, February 25, 2003 by the International Herald Tribune Gaining an Empire, Losing Democracy? by Norman Mailer LOS ANGELES There is a subtext to what the Bushites are doing as they prepare for war in Iraq. My hypothesis is that President George W. Bush and many conservatives have come to the conclusion that the only way they can save America and get if off its present downslope is to become a regime with a greater military presence and drive toward empire. My fear is that Americans might lose their democracy in the process. By downslope I'm referring not only to the corporate scandals, the church scandals and the FBI scandals. The country has gone kind of crazy in the eyes of conservatives. Also, kids can't read anymore. Especially for conservatives, the culture has become too sexual. Iraq is the excuse for moving in an imperial direction. War with Iraq, as they originally conceived it, would be a quick, dramatic step that would enable them to control the Near East as a powerful base - not least because of the oil there, as well as the water supplies from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers - to build a world empire. The Bushites also expect to bring democracy to the region and believe that in itself will help to diminish terrorism. But I expect the opposite will happen: terrorists are not impressed by democracy. They loathe it. They are fundamentalists of the most basic kind. The more successful democracy is in the Near East - not likely in my view - the more terrorism it will generate.

NORMAN MAILER DECLARES: 'AMERICA IS SO VAIN'
**Exclusive**
In an 8,000-wordish polemic to be published in this weekend's London SUNDAY TIMES [9/8/02], Norman Mailer sounds what he hopes to be a "wake up call for America," the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.
DRUDGE can reveal more of the coming rant, which is sure to ignite controversy on both shores.
Mailer claims:
"This century is going to be the most awesome of all centuries to contemplate - there is a real question whether human kind will get to the end of it... America's so big, so powerful, and so vain, ... I get angry when I see it being less than it can be.
"The British have a love of their country that is profound. They can revile it, tell dirty stories about it. But deep down their patriotism is deep. In America we're playing musical chairs - don't get caught without a flag or you're out of the game. Why do we need all this reaffirmation? It's as if we're a three hundred pound man who's seven feet tall, superbly shaped, absolutely powerful, and every three minutes he's got to reaffirm the fact that his arm pits have a wonderful odor. We don't need compulsive, self-serving patriotism. It's odious...
"When you have a great country it's your duty to be critical of it so it can become even greater...

Norman Mailer
A Literary Lion Roars
By Carolyn T. Hughes
ORMAN Mailer rarely gives interviews anymore; they distract from his writing. Instead, the father of five daughters and four sons lives a quiet life with his sixth wife, Norris Church Mailer, dividing his time between homes in Brooklyn Heights and Provincetown, on Cape Cod. Once Mailer does consent to talk for the record, however, he holds nothing back. Both delightful and fierce, Mailer drives a conversation like Coney Island's notorious Cyclone roller coaster. And as he looks back on the highs and lows of his colorful career, you realize it's been one hell of a ride.
Like Byron, Mailer awoke one morning to find himself famous. In 1948, just four years out of the army, the 25-year-old Mailer published The Naked and the Dead (Rinehart), the best-selling novel considered the premier fictional treatment of World War II. Mailer metamorphosed from struggling writer into legitimate contender for the title of the best postwar novelist—heir apparent to Ernest Hemingway.
