Just before enrolling in the Sorbonne, in Paris, he wrote The Naked and the Dead(1948) based on his personal experiences in World War II, it was both a critical and commercial success and hailed by many as one of the finest American novels to come out of WWII. Other highlights in a long and distinguished career include : The White Negro , a sociological and semi-autobiographical essay, one of his best pieces, in the authors own opinion. Advertisements for Myself , a collection of the best of Mailer's essays, stories, interviews and journalism from the 40's and 50's.

Norman Mailer His Life And Works Quotes From Norman Mailer On Booze : "People drink to restore their egos." On Boxing : "I respect most boxers because they're violent people who learned to discipline themselves ... a good boxer is an artist ... Boxing is existential - some fights are better than others." On Celebrity : "I understand one element of celebrity, which is the unreality of it. At the age of 25 I went from being the kid-next-door ... to being called a major American writer - that's a role you just don't fit at 25 ... I use to feel I was secretary to someone named Norman Mailer, to meet him you had to meet me first." On Critics : "I care about reviews - they affect your wallet in the most direct fashion." On Failure : "The last chapter of Marilyn, where I speculated on the possibility of her being murdered. It was not good journalism." On Fears : "I fear decrepitude." On Humanity : "We're all divided souls, we've got two natures in us, You measure schizophrenia not by the fact that you're divided but how well the divisions speak to one another." On Ideologies : "This notion of the women's movement that women are good and men are evil is about as useful as Hitlerism or Communism or Political Correctness or any kind of ideology that is limiting or constricting."

Excerpts from the testimony of norman mailer and Allen Ginsberg.

The Boston Trial of "Naked Lunch."
Boston, Mass., once the scene of such famous censorship trials as those involving Forever Amber, God's Little Acre, and, more recently, Tropic of Cancer, again attracted a distinguished gathering of literary luminaries on January 12, 1965, when "A Book Named Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs" found itself the defendant in Boston Superior Court before Judge J. Hudson. The witnesses who testified on behalf of Naked Lunch included Norman Mailer, Allen Ginsberg, John Ciardi, Paul Hollander, Gabriele B. Jackson, Norman Holland, Stanley E. Eldred, John B. Sturrock, and Thomas H. Jackson. The attorney appearing in behalf of the book and its publisher, Grove Press, Inc., was Edward de Grazia, assisted by Daniel Klubock. As we go to press the court has still to hand down its decision. What follows are excerpts from the testimony of Mr. Mailer and Mr. Ginsberg, concluded by a statement from Mr. de GRAZIA. EDWARD DE GRAZIA: Mr. Mailer, you have referred to the fact that in some of your writings you deal with political matters. Would it be unfair to say that in much of your writing, both as a novelist and as an essayist, you deal with moral questions and moral matters? NORMAN MAILER: Well, I try to. It's like saying

, novelist and journalist. Mailer first gained prominence with his novel of World War II, The Naked and the Dead . He used fictional, autobiographical, and journalistic styles to present his sharp views on the violence and corruption of social values in American society. Mailer won two Pulitzer Prizes, one in 1968 for The Armies of the Night , a journalistic account of the 1967 anti-Vietnam War demonstration at the Pentagon, and the other for The Executioner's Song , about the life and death of murderer Gary Gilmore. In 1969 Mailer ran unsuccessfully for mayor of New York City on a platform calling for the city to become the fifty-first state in the Union.

Norman Mailer Réalisateur, Acteur, Chef monteur, Producteur, Scénariste américain
Né(e) le 31 Janvier 1923 à Long Branch - New Jersey (Etats-Unis)
