Undefined RSS content type: not the user's fault
0 comments permalink Rogers Cadenhead is a new member of the RSS 2.0 Advisory Board who is patiently taking on some issues that affect RSS. The current issue he is working through is that of element content types Mark Pilgrim sums up the content issue may conclude something , where something is undefined. Rogers' states, converting the content to "text/html". A fourth alternative is that my blog software accepts anything the user enters and passes it straight on to the browser or the syndication feed unaltered, but in no way can it be construed that this is the user's fault! In contrast, Atom provides a mechanism for producers to declare the content type of content their software produces, irrespective of the producer's user interface for the user to enter that data and most definitely not without the ability to provide the user feedback on their content. Rogers also writes, The default media type for Atom content elements is "text/plain". I suspect that many weblog authors would balk at being required to compose entries as well-formed XML such as XHTML. This is red herring. Users use a user interface to enter their content. If a software developer requires the user to enter well-formed XHTML they will be in competition with software developers that do not. Whether or not both products produce well formed XHTML (or plain text, or entity encoded tag soup) has no a priori bearing on what the user is entering.

    Prevalent Continuations
0 comments permalink What do Prevalence persistent storage libraries and Continuation-based web frameworks have to do with each other? Nothing, other than you should immediately take a moment to familiarize yourself with these techniques so that you can know if either of them will save you tons of effort and complexity and if they are currently available to you. Prevalence, most well known by its 350-line reference implementation, Prevayler , is an ACID/database-quality, transaction-safe, easily replicatable, object persistence technique for small to medium size applications of up to several hundred megabytes of data. Continuation-based web frameworks let you write complex, modeless, interactive web applications in a top-down, linear fashion as simple as writing command-line based applications that prompt for input.
    Prevalence
Prevalence is a technique named and popularized by Klaus Wuestefeld that combines the ability to serialize data structures with the "command" design pattern for capturing transactions that change those data structures, and which themselves can be serialized and replicated as transaction logs. Most languages these days have libraries that allow you to marshall or serialize your objects to disk, very simply. The problem with "just" marshalling your data are twofold: you must either snapshot all your objects very often or snapshot each object as they change. If you need to replicate those objects, over a web server farm, for example, you've doubled the complexity again.

Doctorow Complete archives for Books An engine of anarchy Ken MacLeod talks about his rebellious youth, his political paradoxes and the visionary power of cyberpunk. By Andrew Leonard July 27, 1999 K en MacLeod is the greatest living Trotskyist libertarian cyberpunk science-fiction humorist. It's a safe claim to make, because he is undoubtedly the only such creature. The 44-year-old Scot and former computer programmer imagines futures full of both socialist unions and libertarian enclaves, warring with each other and within themselves. You don't often find communist mercenaries working for capitalist insurance companies in science fiction. In Ken MacLeod's future, such political incongruities are a joyous fact of life. Add your regular cyberpunk ingredients machine consciousness, post-human trickery, cool gadgets and lots of good drugs and rock 'n' roll and you have a heady, rollicking brew. MacLeod's political fiction is no pose. He's a former Communist Party member who has won two Prometheus awards for best libertarian science fiction novel. After his American editor told me that MacLeod was a regular "trenchant" contributor to Internet-based discussion groups, I decided to do some cyberspace stalking. Where does he hang out? The bulk of his contributions are in the Usenet newsgroup "rec.arts.sf.written." No surprise there r.a.s.w. is one of the oldest watering holes on the Net quite a few authors congregate there with their fans, critics and peers. But his next most favored spot is "alt.politics.socialism.trotsky" and after that, a little down the list, "talk.politics.libertarianism." One of MacLeod's hobbies, it seems, when he's between books, is plunging into the Internet fray to argue about what Marx and Engels really intended, and to engage in the endless hair-splitting dear to libertarians.

It had to happen! Scottish media love object, Iain Banks, the UK's best selling author of the Culture series gives us the low down on his science fiction space operas par excellence. Fellow Jock, Ken McLeod, author of the rather fab Stone Canal snuck in too. Interviewing them was Stephen Hunt, author of For The Crown and The Dragon , the WH Smith New Talent Award novel that kicked off the flintlock fantasy genre in the early '90s. Our Hunty is only 50% Scottish on his mother's side, but when cornered at a party, he can do a fine slurring Sean Connery accent.
SH. Can you give us a quick potted history of your careers for readers who might not be familiar with your works? IB. For me, it was spending the first 14 years trying to get published and writing about a million words. Finally I did a second draft of the Wasp Factory which was accepted in 1983, then published in 1984. Since then it has been about a book a year published, and for the last few years I have been alternating between a mainstream novel and science fiction work. The famous M.
