Archibald MacLeish
[From October 27, 1942 until August 20, 1945 the Lee Boyhood Home was owned by Ada Hitchcock MacLeish and her husband, the American poet Archibald MacLeish. Mr. MacLeish's son has published an account of his 'life with father.' The following is an appreciation of Archibald MacLeish by poet Dana Gioia which appeared as part of a review of the book in the Washington Times of February 25, 2001]. No American writer of distinction has ever played as important a roll in public service as Archibald MacLeish. After a distinguished early career in law, journalism, and literature, the eminent poet became the Librarian of Congress in 1939. A member of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "Brain Trust," MacLeish went on to head the World War II defense information bureau, the Office of Facts and Figures, as well as the Committee on War Information and the Office of Censorship. MacLeish also joined a secret government committee in 1943 to plan the postwar world and helped draft the design for the United Nations. Appointed assistant secretary of state for cultural and public affairs in 1944, he led the publicity effort to sell the American electorate on the U.N. He also wrote a substantial portion of the organization's charter and headed the first US. delegation to UNESCO. Meanwhile he also wrote speeches for FDR, including most of the 1941 inaugural address, and gave regular radio broadcasts championing administration policies. It was no wonder that his Library of Congress associates referred to him as Roosevelt's "Minister of Culture."

    Archibald MacLeish
Archibald MacLeish was born in Glencoe, Illinois, and educated at Yale, Harvard, and Tufts universities. After World War I, in which he served as a captain in the artillery, MacLeish returned to teach in the Harvard Law School. Subsequently, he left teaching to practice law in Boston, but gave up a successful practice because "he never could believe in it." He wanted to write poetry. In 1923 he left for Paris with his wife and children in order to submerge himself in the literary atmosphere of that city and to write his own poetry in his own way. "I speak to my own time/To no time after," he wrote, and dated the beginning of his life from the year 1923. While in France, MacLeish produced three volumes of poetry¡X Streets In The Moon The Hamlet Of A. MacLeish (1928), and New Found Land (1930)¡Xthe success of which was assurance that his decision to turn from law to poetry had indeed been a wise one. After he returned to the United States in l928, MacLeish went to Mexico, where he retraced Cortes' route from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to the valley of Tenochtitlan. The result was a narrative poem, Conquistador , based on Bernal Diaz's True History Of The Conquest Of New Spain, published in l932. The following year it received the Pulitzer Prize. Shortly after publication of

Letter to Harriet Monroe 4 June 1931 Conquistador
Why didn't it [ Conquistador ] ring your bell? I have had plenty of cracks. Pound wrote me that it was damn bad and Tate informed the world that although I was skillful enough I was morally obsolete. And neither comment disturbed me much because I know myself that the poem isn't damn bad and I also know why Pound says (but does not think) it is. While as for Tate I simply have to confess that that I don't understand his vocabulary. He apparently means that the poem was written in past tense.
. . . the comment of the socialogues that it isn't about OUR TIME hasn't made much of a dent in my convictions because whether they know it or not it is a lot more about OUR TIME than most of the daily papers. . . Letter to H. Phelps Putnam c. June 1932 Land of the Free

    Karren L. Alenier
    on ARCHIBALD MACLEISH
(May 7, 1892 - April 20, 1982) So what is a Gertrude Stein aficionado doing writing about Archibald MacLeish? The two poets would seem very different: she an experimenter, he a formalist; she a Harvard grad, he a Yalie (though MacLeish also graduated from Harvard law school at the top of his class), she with her limited public service activities, he a statesman, government leader, and soldier. I attribute my interest in MacLeish to serendipity, curiosity, and a willingness to challenge myself by exploring the work of a poet I believe few would be interested in reading today. The day MacLeish died, I wandered into Bridge Street Books in Georgetown and purchased a copy of his verse play J.B. , winner of one of three of MacLeish's Pulitzer Prizes. (How is it possible that a poet wins three Pulitzer Prizes and is not read any more? More on this below.) Thinking I would read the play later, I put the book into my collection of poetry and it sat for 20 years, until serendipitously Kim Roberts asked me if I could write about MacLeish for this special edition of Beltway . I figured it was time for me to act on my original impulse to know something about MacLeish, with whom I share the same birthday, and so I raided the shelves of McKeldin Library at my alma mater, the University of Maryland.
