A Welsh writer who spent much of his adult life in London, Machen devoted many of his supernaturalist works to an exploration of a mythic vein of the post-Gothic. His works have frequent recourse to the idea that some vestige of a primitive, malefic, pre-Christian "Little People" has survived into the present, and Machen explores the metaphysical implications of this possibility with gusto. Largely eschewing the mid- to late-Victorian interest in the psychological implications of the supernatural, Machen set the stage for the Cthulhu horrors of Lovecraft and others at the same time that his work testifies to the demise of Victorian complacency.

  • The Hill of Dreams - Semi-autobiographical, this recounts a young man's dreamy childhood in rural Wales, and his attempts to make a living as an author in the City. Generally thought to be Machen's greatest work. The Great God Pan (1894) - A woman has her mind destroyed by an attempt to enable her to see the god of nature. Years later, a young woman, Helen Vaughn arrives on the London social scene, disturbing many young men; it transpires that she is the monstrous offspring of the god Pan and the woman of the experiment. The White People - a young girl's diary, recounting tales told her by her nurse, and her increasingly deep delvings into magic. Often described as one of the greatest of all horror short stories. Machen's work, both fiction and non-fiction, enjoyed high prestige both in Britain and America in the early part of this century, but the rise of modernist taste in fiction led to something of an eclipse of his reputation. Many today have come to his writing by chance, through an interest in horror and the supernatural, or in the writers of the 1890s, and have come to believe he should be recognized as a canonical writer, his reputation equal to that of currently more famous contemporaries such as Arthur Conan Doyle and Robert Louis Stevenson. The Friends Of Arthur Machen is a fellowship which exists to foster interest in Machen and his work, to aid research, and for the pleasure of its members.

B orn Arthur Llewellyn Jones in Caerleon-on-Usk, Wales, Machen was the author of "The Great God Pan" (1894), The Three Imposters (1890) (an episode novel containing "The Novel of the White Powder", "The Novel of the Black Seal," and others), The Hill of Dreams The Terror (1917) and other supernatural horror. His adopted surname is pronounced mack'n (rhymes with "blacken"). He was also an essayist, a journalist, a Shakespearean actor, an occultist (he was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn along with Blackwood, Yeats, and Aleister Crowley), and a translator (of Cassanova's Memoirs , Beroalde de Verville's Moyen de Parvenir (Fantastic Tales) , and the Heptameron of Marguerite, Queen of Navarre). His autobiography was issued in three volumes beginning with Far Off Things in 1922 (the title is borrowed from Wordsworth). By the estimate of many, Machen deserves a premier place among the best of his field. Lovecraft counted him foremost of the four "modern masters" of supernatural horror (with Algernon Blackwood, Lord Dunsany, and M. R. James): "Of living creators of cosmic fear raised to its most artistic pitch, few if any can hope to equal the versatile Arthur Machen, ... master of an exquisitely lyrical and expressive prose style." Lovecraft ranked Machen's story "The White People" a close second to Blackwood's "The Willows" as the best weird story ever written. On the other hand, Carl van Vechten considered the highly autobiographical Hill of Dreams to be Machen's masterpiece; Machen said he had intended it to be "a Robinson Crusoe of the mind" and "an interior tale of the soul and its emotions." Fantasy connoisseur Lin Carter called Machen "one of the noblest stylistic masters of the English language in our century." And genre historian E. F. Bleiler listed him as "probably the outstanding British writer of

Machen's Life and Times
Childhood in Wales He was born in Caerleon on Usk, in the county of Gwent, South Wales, in 1863, and christened Arthur Llewellyn Jones. His father, John Edward Jones (Machen was his mother's maiden name), was an Anglican priest, Vicar of the tiny church of Llandewi, near Caerleon, and the boy was raised at the rectory there. A solitary child, he learned first to love the gentle slopes of the nearby Soar Brook, then later the more awesome fastnesses of the Black Mountains which lay to the north, the ancient forest of Wentwood and the remoter Severn Valley. Though he returned only rarely to Gwent in later life, his work continually evoked its darker landscapes, often as a prelude to either wonder or terror. The child was awed, too, by the findings of local archaeologists, who in those days were digging up strange pagan sculptures from the time of the Roman occupation of the region. Machen's grandfather had found Roman inscriptions and carving in his own Caerleon churchyard, and the boy's imagination was captured early by the sense that the ground itself was haunted with a tangible strangeness - an intuition on which he drew for much of his best fiction writing. The Romano-British god Nodens, whose temple was excavated at nearby Lydney Park in his boyhood, turns up in some of his most memorable horror fiction. At the age of eleven he was sent to Hereford Cathedral School, where he received the standard classical education appropriate to a middle class boy. He was an able pupil, but remained an aloof one, interested already in the strange and arcane byways of literature and history. Despite his evident scholarly ability, his parents were not rich enough to send him to Oxford in his father's footsteps. After some false starts and after his (anonymous) first publication of
