Commemorating Canada's First Prime Minister
Bellevue House was once the home of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada's first prime minister. Restored to the 1840s period, and staffed by costumed interpreters, the house and gardens are kept much as they would have been during the time that Macdonald lived here with his wife and infant son. 48. SIR JOHN A. MACDONALD STATUE
Information on the statue of Canada's first Prime Minister erected in Hamilton after his death.
http://collections.ic.gc.ca/wentworth/mac.htm
Cultural Landmarks of Hamilton-Wentworth Sir John A. Macdonald Statue Location: Gore Park, King Street East, Hamilton, Ontario Following the death of Sir John A. Macdonald on June 6, 1891, the Hamilton Board of Trade proposed to erect a permanent memorial to commemorate the former Prime Minister. The Board believed the statue would be a credit to the City of Hamilton, and would also attract thousands of tourists. The city agreed and proceeded to establish the Macdonald Committee. This newly formed committee was responsible for generating money to fund the project. Senator Sanford believed the committee would have no difficulties raising four to five thousand dollars for the cause. Tenders were given and sculptors submitted models of Sir John A. Macdonald. George E. Wade of London, England was the sculptor chosen for the project. His model portrayed Macdonald in a buttoned up Prince Albert coat with his right hand extended. The final statue was cast in bronze and was eight feet and three inches in height. After the completion of the project, the statue was shipped from London, England to Hamilton and arrived on October 30, 1893. The statue was immediately place upon a pedestal of gray New Brunswick granite that stood eleven feet high and was located in the intersection of King and Hughson streets, facing west. Once the statue was mounted, the overall height was nineteen feet and three inches. The statue was then covered by bunting in preparation for the official dedication which was scheduled for November 1, 1893.

John A. Macdonald was many things, a businessman, a lawyer, a politician and the first Prime Minister of Canada. He first moved to Canada in 1820 with his parents where they settled in Kingston, Upper Canada. By the age of 17, the young Macdonald was the sole manager of a branch legal office in Napanee. Early in life as a Private in the militia he participated in the attack on rebels at Montgomery's Tavern and, ironically, later as a lawyer defended several rebels in court. Macdonald had a well publicized drinking problem which often brought him grief, coming under scrutiny for drinking during meetings and sometimes having trouble recollecting the proceedings of the day. His political career began by serving as an alderman in Kingston in 1843. Macdonald began to associate himself with conservative politics in 1844 and he was elected to the legislative assembly in the same year (age 29) for Kingston. During these times government was changing as responsible government was looming and a modern departmental structure was being introduced.

Look up at Sir John A. Macdonald (1815-1891), Canada's first Prime Minister (1867). He is posed as an orator, looking over the city, a stack of books at his feet and the text of a speech in his hand. The sculpture is placed high on a granite pediment. Walk behind the monument to see the sheets of parchment and bound volumes inscribed "Consolidation of British America." Macdonald is remembered for his central role in the unification of the four colonies of Upper and Lower Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia into the confederation of Canada.

On to Part 4
Sir John A. Macdonald and the North-West Mounted Police
Profits were high in the nefarious exchange of goods. The Indians, having no use for white man's money, exchanged their furs for rifles, ammunition and whisky. The sale of whisky realized the greatest profits, and the
Indians who craved the vile concoction sought out the traders who offered the most, often bartering their last possessions for a few cups of "Whoop-Up bug juice". As a result, many Indians were stripped of their pride and possessions; they became debauched and demoralized, and the old tribal institutions began to break down. Life became cheap; murder and robbery went unpunished.

Sir John A. Macdonald
Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, was originally against the idea of Confederation. Then, he became a late convert to the idea. And, with all the zeal of the convert, he became one of Confederation's greatest exponents. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1815, Macdonald's family emigrated to Upper Canada in 1820. By the age of 19, he had established his own Kingston law practice. His introduction to politics came in 1843 when he served as a city alderman. In 1844, Macdonald was elected Conservative representative for Kingston in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada. He served as Joint Premier in 1856-57; 1857-58; 1858-62. Macdonald's vision and constitutional expertise gave him a major role in the drafting of the British North America Act. He excelled at parliamentary leadership and led the Conservative Party for 24 years (1867-91). For all but five of those years, he was Prime Minister (1867-73; 178-91). During his first term as Prime Minister, Manitoba (1870), British Columbia (1871) and Prince Edward Island (1873) joined Canada. The Canadian Pacific Railway, built between 1871 and 1885, which allowed the opening of the West and bound the new country together, was an initiative of the Macdonald government and, in the view of many, its greatest achievement. Shady dealings between the government and the railway syndicate led to the government's defeat in 1874. Returned to power in 1878, Macdonald enacted the National Policy, legislation that guided Canada's development well into the 20th century.
