Sir John Alexander Macdonald The Man Who Helped Make Canada The Country It Is Today by Pamela Atwell
Sir John A. Macdonald was one of Canada’s founding fathers. He is most remembered as being Canada’s first Prime Minister, running the government from July 1, 1867 until November 5, 1873. Macdonald would become Prime Minister once again on October 17, 1878 and would stay in this position until June 6,1891. While he was leader of the country he faced his own share of political obstacles, including Confederation, the Metis rebellion and threats of an American he is among the greatest leaders Canada has ever seen and played a significant part in the forming of Canada as a country. John Alexander Macdonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 11, 1815. His family immigrated to Canada (Kingston, Ontario) in 1820; Macdonald was five years old at the time. In 1829 Macdonald ended his schooling; his parents could not afford to send him to university. Macdonald would later say that if he had went to university he would have ended up in literature, not politics. (Waite, John

Biography
"When fortune empties her chamberpot on your head, smile    and say ‘we are going to have a summer shower.’ "
Fortune emptied her chamberpot on Sir John A. Macdonald's head more than once, and his comment is indicative of the humour with which he met life's set-backs. Canada's first prime minister probably had more obstacles to encounter than any other. Finally, external events hastened the acceptance of Confederation. The American Civil War, the Fenian Raids of 1866 and a generally aggressive American foreign policy caused concern about the defence of the British North American colonies. Macdonald played a leading role in promoting Confederation, to the point of making an alliance with his staunch political rival and Opposition leader, George Brown. With his wide-ranging personal vision and constitutional expertise, Macdonald drafted the British North America Act , which defined the federal system by which the four provinces were united on July 1, 1867. Macdonald was appointed Prime Minister of Canada and won the federal election the following month. In his first administration, his primary purpose was to build a nation. Communications between the provinces were essential and to this end, Macdonald began the Transcontinental Railway. It would run from Halifax to the Pacific coast and include Canada's two new provinces of Manitoba and British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories. Under Macdonald's leadership, Canada achieved a certain degree of autonomy from Britain in foreign affairs. He also brought in a system of tariffs to protect Canadian products from foreign imports, especially those from the United States, in order to boost economic growth.

MAIN MENU Short Stories SS Collections Novels McGee Series ... Links John Dann MacDonald gained his fame as the creator of Travis McGee , but he should be remembered for a great deal more than this. Although he was one of the last pulpsters , he was also one of the first of them to successfully write mainstream crime fiction, capitalizing on the paperback publishing phenomenon of the 1950s. He learned to adapt the hard-boiled style, with which he had plied his early trade, into a form of mystery writing that earned critical acclaim, paved the way for future American authors such as Carl Hiaasen and Robert Parker, and, indeed, can be said to have influenced writers the world over. Along with Ross Macdonald (no relation, whom he never met), he was able to return crime fiction to the genre of literature, following the trail blazed by Hammett and Chandler, elevating the detective novel from the miasma of gratuitous violence, and from the depths of the depravity to which it had been sunk by writers like Mickey Spillane. MacDonald evolved from a prodigiously prolific writer of short stories into an accomplished yet still very productive novelist, who also wrote adventures, thrillers, romances and science fiction.

Macdonald, Sir John Alexander Macdonald, Sir John Alexander, Cartier of Lower Canada headed the Liberal-Conservatives (a coalition largely of Macdonald's creating), and he became prime minister in 1857. This government fell in 1858, but he continued as a cabinet minister until 1862. He briefly returned (1864) as prime minister before he was joined by George Brown Pacific scandal , which involved the railroad, broke (1873), and the government resigned. Changing industrial conditions made Macdonald the advocate of a protectionist policy (known as the National Policy), and he was returned as prime minister in 1878 and served until his death. The transcontinental railroad was completed (1885), and other public works were accomplished. Macdonald was knighted in 1867. See his correspondence, ed. by J. Pope (1921); biographies by his nephew, J. P. Macpherson (2 vol., 1891) and D. G. Creighton (1952 and 1956); study by D. Swainson (1971).

Sir John Alexander Macdonald
Sir John A. Macdonald Macdonald was born on January 10 or 11, 1815 in Glasgow, Scotland. When he was five years old his family moved to Kingston in Upper Canada. When he was fifteen he began to study law, and by the time he was nineteen he had opened his own law office in Kingston. He quickly got a reputation for taking hard cases, and for being a skilful lawyer. Macdonald soon started his political career as a councillor for Kingston in 1843. Four years later he moved to provincial politics when he was elected as the Conservative party's member for Kingston in 1847. As a member of the Conservatives, Macdonald managed to unite French and English politicians. This allowed the new Liberal-Conservative party to form the government; after the leader of the party retired in 1856 Macdonald became co-prime minister of the Province of Canada. In order to deal with the Province of Canada's economic and political problems, a group of politicians led by Macdonald came up with the idea of joining with the Maritime colonies to form a larger country. Macdonald was a driving force behind

John Sandfield Macdonald, Ottawa, Ontario
(December 12, 1812 - June 1, 1872)
Called to the Bar of Upper Canada in 1840, John Sandfield Macdonald settled in Cornwall to practice law. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada and remained there until 1867. From the outset of his political career, he associated with reformers and their program. From 1849 to 1851, he held the office of solicitor general in Robert Baldwin 's cabinet and in 1852, was appointed Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Highly critical of Lord Elgin's politics, Sandfield Macdonald moved closer to George Brown as a spokesman for reformers in Upper Canada. But their co-operation was short-lived; George Brown advocated rep by pop and a highly centralized legislative union, while Sandfield Macdonald favoured a double majority, which would better safeguard the distinctive characteristics of United Canada's two regions. He envisioned a more flexible, less centralized federal authority. Sandfield Macdonald was called on to form a government from 1862 to 1864. When his attempt to apply the principle of the double majority failed, he proposed a coalition of the various ideologies within a single government to counter Canada's political instability. This Great Coalition would be the work of George Brown

"The only thing in the world worth a damn is the strange, touching,
pathetic, awesome nobility of the individual human spirit." Attended the University of Pennsylvania 1934-35 but took his BS from Syracuse University in 1938. The next year MacDonald acquired an MBA from Harvard University. The approach of WWII seeming obvious, John enlisted in the US Army in 1940 and served until 1946.
