    Description
G.R. MacDonald of Woodend was educated in Christchurch and then Oxford University, and subsequently returned to Christchurch after serving in the First World War. He farmed at 'Lowry Hills' near Cheviot and at 'Hambleden' at West Eyreton. Married to Arawina, daughter of Sir George Clifford, he was director of the Christchurch Press Company and was also on the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club. The material comprises 12,000 handwritten cards giving biographical information on assisted immigrants to Canterbury for the period 1850-1900, compiled by MacDonald and presented to the Canterbury Museum in 1964. The index has been published on microfiche as 'The G.R. MacDonald index of Canterbury biographies'.
