His mother, Pamela Lyttelton, was a keen amateur musician playing at various times piano, recorder and, late in her life, the guitar. His father took up the cello while at Cambridge, but put it down again after a university magazine article revealed 'When George Lyttelton practises the cello, all the cats in the district converge upon his rooms in the belief that one of their members is in distress.' Humphrey began playing the trumpet in 1936, and formed a school quartet the same year. After serving as an officer in the Grenadier Guards during World War II, in 1949 he started working as a cartoonist at the London Daily Mail, where he remained until 1956. Much of his spare time was spent with his own band, which he formed in 1948, and has led continuously up to the present day. Humphrey recorded prolifically for Parlophone Records in the 50s, and now appears on his own label - Calligraph Records. He has written seven books, including two volumes entitled The Best of Jazz.

Sanders Cup History - Part 4 Related Topics: Sanders Cup Sanders Cup Part 1 Part 2 ... Home Part 4 - George Andrews and Betty The furore surrounding George Andrews and Betty's win in the 1926 Sanders Cup contest in Dunedin, did not so much die down as simmer (See Vintage Viewpoint November 1998). Rumour and innuendo, sometimes of a personal nature, continued to bubble up from the South. Betty, was `not a true Rona-Jellicoe', she was `too fine', `too full'. If there were any genuine irregularities, they were not obvious and her detractors could only speculate on some vague `unfairness' about her, to rationalise her successes. To them, it seemed well nigh impossible for an amateur to design such a boat, let alone build her; sail her and so comprehensively beat the professionally built hulls. She had to be illegal, for nothing else made any sense. Aucklanders largely remained above the debate, which was essentially a southern affair, but were quite taken aback by its intensity. AYMBA members, E.J. `Manny' Kelly and Charles Palmer, on their return to Auckland following the contest deplored the criticism levelled at Betty and her owner-skipper, who had been dubbed `a farmer'. In the parlance of the old style Edwardian yachtsmen, to be called a `farmer' was a most derogatory term indeed and implied a sort of uncultured, unseamanlike approach to the noble sport of yachting.

LYTHAM pleasant promenade and drive along the shore, and other appointments of a seaside resort, but it is less wholly devoted to holiday visitors than Blackpool, which lies 8 m. N.W. A Benedictine cell was founded here at the close of the I2th century by the lord of the manor, Richard Fitz-Roger. 1889 succeeded, by the death of the 3rd duke of Buckingham and Chandos, to the viscounty of COBHAM, in which title the barony of Lyttelton is now merged. Other distinguished sons were Arthur Temple Lyttelton (d. 1903), warden of Selwyn College, Cambridge, and bishop-suffragan of Southampton; Edward Lyttelton (b. 1855), headmaster of Haileybury (1890-1905) and then of Eton; and Alfred Lyttelton (b. 1857), secretary of state for the colonies (1903-1906). It was a family of well-known cricketers, Alfred being in his day the best wicket-keeper in England as well as a fine tennis player. For the ist baron see Sir R. Phillimore's Memoirs and Correspondence of Lord Lyttelton, 1734-1773 (2 vols., 1845). LYTTELTON, a borough of New Zealand, the port of Christ-church (q.v.) on the E. coast of South Island, on an inlet on the north-western side of Banks Peninsula. Pop. (1906) 3941. It is surrounded by abrupt hills rising to 1600 ft., through which a railway communicates with Christchurch (7m. N.W.) by a tunnel if m. long. Great breakwaters protect the harbour, which has an area of no acres, with a low-tide depth of 20 to 27 ft. There is a graving dock accessible for vessels of 6000 tons. The produce of the rich agricultural district of Canterbury is exported, frozen or preserved. Lyttelton, formerly called Port Cooper and Port Victoria, was the original settlement in this district (1850).
