The literature of any period neccesserily reflects society around it, and through much of history tables has been an integral part of society. So to try and get some information via this method I started by going through hundreds of works of English literature trying to trace reference to the game, and this page is the result of the first step in that process. As this information might prove usefull to others doing research I decided to put it up on thw web.

John Lydgate, 1370-1449
The illustration is from the Sege of Thebes ; it shows Lydgate, arm extended, telling his tale on the return journey from Canterbury to London, described in the Prologue to his Sege of Thebes John Lydgate, Chaucer's most prolific admirer, was born in Suffolk in 1370 in the village of Lydgate near the abbey of Bury St. Edmund's, which he entered as a postulate when he was about fifteen years old. He remained a monk the rest of his life, though he travelled outside his cloister (to Paris at least once, in 1426), and his patrons were powerful aristocrats and courtiers. Over 100,000 lines of his verse survive, much of it in enormous works of translation The Troy Book (over 30,000 lines) [Widener 11473.97], The Pilgrimage of the Life of Man (24,000 lines) [Widener 11473.77], and The Fall of Princes (26,000 lines) [Widener 11473,121]. These were all written to order, for powerful patrons. Lydgate did better when he was writing for himself, as seems to have been the case in his many short poems [see The Minor Poems Widener 11473.107], and perhaps even

JOHN LYDGATE'S PROLOGUE TO THE SIEGE OF THEBES : INTRODUCTION
John Lydgate's Prologue to the Siege of Thebes
Edited by John M. Bowers
Originally Published in The Canterbury Tales: Fifteenth-Century Continuations and Additions
Kalamazoo, Michigan: Medieval Institute Publications, 1992
INTRODUCTION
John Lydgate was born c. 1370 when Chaucer was completing The Book of the Duchess ; he was admitted to the monastery at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, in 1385 when Chaucer was finishing Troilus and Criseyde ; and he was ordained a priest in 1397 when Chaucer was in the final phase of The Canterbury Tales . Probably while studying at Oxford in the late 1390s, he made contact with Thomas Chaucer, who resided at Ewelme in the neighboring Oxfordshire countryside (Schirmer 59-65). The conjunction of these two rising stars, the one with political ambitions and the other with poetic aspirations, led to a great outpouring of Chaucerian versifications spanning the entire first half of the fifteenth century, until Lydgate's death c. 1450 (Pearsall 1970, 49-82). The Siege of Thebes falls about midway in Lydgate's career. An allusion near the end of the poem to the Treaty of Troyes means it was concluded after May 1420; its general address to Henry V indicates it was completed before the monarch's premature death in August 1422. The Prologue's portrayal of Lydgate as a monk adhering to the strict regulations of his order seems to be a direct, almost point-by-point reply to the king's formal list of complaints against laxness among the Benedictines, leading to a special convocation of Black Monks at Westminster in May 1421 (Pantin 98-134). It is possible that Lydgate wrote the

JOHN LYDGATE'S PROLOGUE TO THE SIEGE OF THEBES: NOTES
The opening is an elaborate imitation of Chaucer's CT I, 1-11 with its description of springtime based on astrology and planetary positions in the Zodiac; yet the first sixty-five lines can scarcely be punctuated, since this wayward sentence never quite manages to yield a main clause. The Middle English encyclopedia On the Properties of Things provides traditional lore concerning the Sun (pp. 484-89), Saturn (pp. 479-80), the Moon (pp. 489-97), and Jupiter (p. 480) as well as the workings of the zodiacus (pp. 460-73). An exact date of April 27, 1421, has been calculated by Johnstone Parr, "Astronomical Dating for Some of Lydgate's Poems," PMLA 67 (1952), 253-56. "Olde colde Saturnus" is mentioned in Chaucer's Boece (IV, m 1), though more fully described in The Knight's Tale ( CT I, 2443-69) as a destructive force, here befitting Lydgate's Theban tragedy that will follow.
Lydgate recalls the mixed company of Chaucer's original pilgrims and the variety of their tales, some courtly, some religious, and some bawdy, told at various stages in their journey from Southwark to Canterbury.
The Miller, the Reeve, and the Cook offered a trio of low-brow fabliaux following the Knight's account of Thebes's defeat at the hands of Duke Theseus, an account which Lydgate will supplement in his own tale for the homeward journey.

The heathland around Aldeburgh , the little houses facing the sea and the quay at Slaughden with its marshes and mudflats, were the inspiration for Suffolk's greatest poet, George Crabbe (1754-1832). In the elegant seaside resort of today, famous for its music festival, visitors are scarcely likely to meet 'A wild, amphibious race / With sullen woe display'd in every face', but Crabbe, whose early life was hard, experienced the depression and brutality of a poor fishing settlement. In his great poems, The Village and The Borough he drew on that experience to become one of the first landscape poets to write realistically about humble people. His story of Peter Grimes, included in The Borough , inspired a later son of Suffolk,
Benjamin Britten, to compose his opera based on it.
