  • 30. Terra Seetch - HEMP FACTS
1857 fritz hugh ludlow writes the first popular book about cannabis use,The Hasheesh Eater. Nineteenth century readers are hungry for more.
    http://www.terraseetch.com/hemp.htm
Hemp played a vital role in world commerce for 8,000 years. However, in the 1930's, a number of U.S. based industrial companies wiped out their competition by allegedly launching a smear campaign linking industrial grade hemp to the drug marijuana. Although it is probably the most useful plant known to mankind, heavy restrictions were imposed on hemp farmers which led to the industry's collapse.

1629 - Colonists introduced hemp into New England
1765 - George Washington, in his diary, discusses separating male and female hemp plants, which makes them more psychoactive ("Historians" believe that was probably not his intent).
1857 - Fritz Hugh Ludlow writes the first popular book about cannabis use, The Hasheesh Eater. Nineteenth century readers are hungry for more. The plant, which is widely grown, remains unregulated.
1915 - El Paso, Texas bans marijuana, noting that it is used by Mexicans, Negroes, prostitutes, pimps and other undesirables. Congress has passed the Harrison Act, which bans narcotics except by perscription.
1937 - Congress passed the Marijuana Tax Act, regulating the sale of marijuana for the first time.

    Clark Ashton Smith
H ailed as "The New Keats" by the San Francisco press, he drew the serious attention of Ambrose Bierce, George Sterling and Jack London when his first poems were first published in 1911. Despite this early literary success and the fact that he lived a mere hundred miles from the vibrant metropolis, he chose a quiet, solitary life in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains. There he would pass his years in relative obscurity, though he gained some small fame as a key contributor to the legendary Weird Tales pulp magazine in the early 1930s. From his cabin on Boulder Ridge, Clark Ashton Smith evoked distant times on earth such as Poseidonis and Hyperborea of the past and Zothique of the far future and conjured up new worlds with a magical melding of science fiction with fantasy and prose with poetry.

Albert Bierstadt is best known for his monumental, panoramic scenes of the American West. Executed with dramatic flair, these paintings captured the vastness and raw power of a still unfamiliar landscape. In the 1860s and early 1870s, Bierstadt's landscapes of the American West were widely exhibited and commanded high prices both nationally and internationally. Bierstadt's family moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1832. Early in life Bierstadt earned local success and by 1850 he exhibited independently. Eager to enhance his skills, Bierstadt spent several years in Dusseldorf, Germany in the 1850s. In 1859, he traveled to the South Pass region of Wyoming with the survey team of Colonel Frederick Lander. The numerous sketches Bierstadt made along the route served as sources for his later paintings. Four years later, in 1863, Beirstadt and the writer Fritz Hugh Ludlow journeyed to Oregon and the Columbia River area of Northern California. That same year, his first major painting

    Harm Reduction
View/Print pdf version with Adobe Acrobat Reader
a talk presented by Michael R. Aldrich, California AIDS Intervention Training Center August 21, 1993 Harm reduction means reducing the harm of drug use to the user and society. Harm reduction recognizes the reality of the world rather than trying to operate in myths and fantasies. It recognizes that people in all societies have used drugs in many different ways for many thousands of years. It recognizes that a "drug-free society" is a myth. It sets up goals that are practical, workable and achievable, unlike the unachievable goal of a drug-free society. Harm reduction asks, What do users want? It is based on the perspective of the user, rather than missionary work, trying to force the perspective of the missionary on the user. It means ethnography rather than law enforcement. Harm reduction means outreach, taking social and health services to people on their own turf and on their own terms. It also means making the system more accessible and more user-friendly rather than defining the user as an enemy be defeated. Harm reduction is future-oriented, rather than past-oriented. It involves real drug education for young people about the benefits as well as the harm of drug use, education about how to use drugs intelligently. It means making safer drugs for future users rather than trying to keep them from using drugs at all.
