Biography garners awards and a musical score
By Barbara McKenna Carolyn Burke's biography of Mina Loy has been well-received by critics The most common thing Carolyn Burke used to hear about her book on Mina Loy was, "Don't you mean Myrna?" Happily, Burke, a research associate in humanities, heard a different tune once the book was released in 1996. Burke's book, Becoming Modern: The Life of Mina Loy (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1996; University of California, 1997) has received glowing praise in media and academic circles. And this past spring the book won a prestigious academic award and was also adapted as a musical. Although an obscure figure now, Mina Loy was a force in the literary world of Paris in the 20s and 30s, on the literary front lines with such artists as Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, and Ezra Pound. Born in London in 1882, Loy was an accomplished poet and painter who, in her open expression of her sexuality and independence, became one of the early voices of feminism as well as an influential experimental poet. Burke's book has been recognized by reviewers across the board as definitive and engaging. Praises have been printed in publications from the

82. From "Parturition" By Mina Loy
I am the centre. Of a circle of pain. Exceeding its boundaries in every direction. The business of the bland sun. Has no affair with me.
http://wso.williams.edu/~cbirtche/mpm/loy2.html
I am the centre Of a circle of pain Exceeding its boundaries in every direction The business of the bland sun Has no affair ... me In my congested cosmos of agony From which there is no escape On infinitely prolonged never -vibrations Or in contraction To the pinpoint nucleus of being Locate an irritation without It is within Within It is without. The sensitized area Is identical with the extensity Of intension Pain is no stronger than the resisting force Pain calls up in me The struggle is equal

We might have lived together. In the lights of the Arno. Or gone apple stealing under the sea. Or played. Hide and seek in love and cobwebs.

We might have lived ... In the lights of the Arno Or gone apple stealing ... under the sea Or played Hide and seek in love and cobwebs And a lullaby on a tin pan
And talked till there were no more tongues To talk with And never have known any better

Sketched the uneven valley groves
The apostle gave alms to the

In fusive sulfur and hurled
Rocks and ore into the air

And now! What hath the Orient’s page? Whose script - can weigh ink of ancient noble volumes We call curious - to bare, our interest with us Who will not gather tales, that fly as feather Plants Which wind doth carry into blossom here? The grey bearded philosopher and his faded books That counsels, rare consolation, like an Old Painting looks A common wealth of joy - no matter!
