Mina Loy was born Mina Gertrude Lowy in London, England on 27th December 1882 to a Jewish father and Protestant mother. She grew up in a repressed and volatile household and received only an informal eduaction.
At the age of seventeen Mina moved to Munich in order to study art. She continued her art studies on her return to England and later moved to Paris. It was in Paris that she changed her name to Loy, in an attempt to distance herself from her Jewish heritage. It was also in Paris that she met her husband Stephen Haweis. She and Stephen married on 31st December 1903. They had three children over the years, although their first child died after only a dew days.
During the years Mina and Stephen spent in Paris, Mina met many emerging modernist artists and writers. Among them were Gertrude and Leo Stein, Guillaume Apollinaire, Pablo Picasso, and Auguste Rodin.

1. Ezra Pound, "A List of Books," Little Review , March 1918; rpt. in Ezra Pound, Selected Prose , ed William Cookson (New York: New Directions, 1973), pp. 424-25.
"T HESE GIRLS," wrote Ezra Pound in the Little Review (1918), referring to Marianne Moore and Mina Loy, "have written a distinctly national product, they have written something which would not have come out of any other country." (See note 1.)       A rather surprising statement, at least about Loy, given that this "girl" wasn't American at all. Born in England in 1882 as Mina Gertrude Löwy to a Hungarian Jewish father who had emigrated to England as a young man, and an English mother, Julia Bryan, Loy grew up in London, studied art in Munich (1899-1901), and then, with her English husband, a fellow art student named Stephen Haweis, lived first in Paris (1903-06), and then in Florence (1906-16), where her two children Giles and Joella were born.

No hay vida ni muerte,

no hay mortandad.
No hay amor ni deseo,
Quien quiera poseer

No hay espacio ni tiempo, no tienen inmensidad. No hay vida ni muerte, y en lo absoluto No hay amor ni deseo, Quien poseyera no tiene cuerpo. y quien dominara No hay espacio ni tiempo

Literary Review
Summer, 2003 by Rob Sheffield
In the summer of 1915, Mina Loy was the most scandalous poet in America. She was a star, a glare urban flash writing the language of the future by the "stellectric" light of her own fame. She had never set foot in New York, or for that matter America, but her obscene four-part poem "Love Songs," published in the debut issue of Others, had made her, the magazine, and the entire New York poetry scene instantly notorious. She was the most famous of the New York poets, attacked in tabloid papers and literary journals. For the rest of her poetic career, the scandal of "Love Songs" followed her. Her only book, Lunar Baedecker, was confiscated at U.S. customs as pornography; nobody knows how many copies ever made it into the country. We might have coupled In the bed-ridden monopoly of a moment Or broken flesh with one another At the profane communion table Where wine is spill't on promiscuous lips These days, anybody can look at Mina Loy's poems, in Roger L. Conover's lavish 1996 The Lost Lunar Baedecker, or read her story in Carolyn Burke's heroic Becoming Modern: The Life Of Mina Loy. That's a good thing. Lots of people have written about Mina Loy in the past fourteen years, sometimes well, sometimes not so well, but the point is that people know about her now. Nobody seems to agree on who Mina Loy really is: a poet? A real poet? A great poet? A character? A feminist icon? A well-connected dilletante? A fashion plate? A nice little role model ? A boho scam artist? A mad, bad, and dangerous-to-know psycho drama-vampire lampshade pimp? But that's a good thing, too. Mina Loy is enjoying such a vibrant afterlife because she's all these things. The more light shines on her, the more there is to see.

Small Press Traffic's Talk Series continues with this presentation by Carolyn Burke, who will discuss her new biography of the
enigmatic modernist poet Mina Loy, and discuss as well the travails of her twenty-year research project, over four continents, on the trail of Loy. London-born Mina Loy (1882-1966) was the intimate of William Carlos Williams, Marcel Duchamp, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, Joseph Cornell, Marinetti, Djuna Barnes and Man Ray; yet despite her genius, beauty and pizzazz she hasuntil quite recentlybeen almost forgotten, except for a few dedicated "Loy"-alists. Her biographer, Carolyn Burke, holds a Ph.D. in literature from Columbia and is well known for her translations and critical work on post-modern French feminisms, particularly Irigaray, Cixous, Kristeva. A native of Australia, she now splits her time between Santa Cruz and Sydney.

The Lost Lunar Baedeker: Poems of Mina Loy > Customer Review #1: a must for poets

I came across Loy in reading about the women of Paris. I have never come back to any book more than this one. Her craft of wordsmith continues to inspire and always make me feel like im reading the most interesting book of poetry.
The Lost Lunar Baedeker: Poems of Mina Loy > Customer Review #2: The most neglected talent of the century. As an English major at a respected private college, I did not encounter this phenomenal womans work. Five years later, I ask myself why. Stunning, intelligent, ground-breaking verse. Mina Loy did not pursue literary fame (though she hobnobbed with the best), and it is, perhaps for this reason that I find her work so intriguing. Unhampered by criticism, Loys work evokes a rare liberty. It is both poised and raw.
