Like many of Lowry's publications, the novel is highly autobiographical. Lowry spent his post- Volcano years drinking and planning a cycle of novels built around his masterwork. He lived from 1940 until 1954 in a primitive cabin in Dollarton, British Columbia, and from 1954 until his death in Italy and then England. I wrote: in the dark cavern of our birth.
The printer had it tavern, which seems better:
But herein lies the subject of our mirth,
Since on the next page death appears and dearth.
So it may be that God's word was distraction,
Which to our strange type appears destruction,
Which is bitter.

('Strange Type' from Selected Poems of Malcolm Lowry Malcolm Lowry was born in Birkenhead, Chesire, England, as the son of Arthur Lowry, a wealthy cotton broker, who owned plantations in Egypt, Peru, and Texas. His grandfather from his mother's side was a Norwegian sea captain. Like his three brothers, he attended public boarding schools. Lowry was educated at Caldicote School, Hertfordshire, and at the Leys school, Cambridge. At the age of fifteen he won a championship in golf in junior series. Rebelling against his bourgeois upbringing, Lowry interrupted his academic studies. He went to sea to work as a deckhand on a freighter bound for China and on a ship sailing to Oslo. One of Lowry's affairs in Norway was to meet the writer

The novel had been a full and difficult decade in the making including a desperate and ultimately fatal struggle with alcohol that would at one point drive him to drink olive oil in the mistaken belief it was hair tonic but the critics thought it comparable to Thomas Wolfe, or better than Hemingway, or second only to Joyce. top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR Sursum Corda!: The Collected Letters of Malcolm Lowry, 1926-1946

The novel can be read simply as a story which you can skip if you want. It can be read as a story you will get more out of if you don't skip. It can be regarded as a kind of symphony, or in another way as a kind of operaor even a horse opera. It is hot music, a poem, a song, a comedy, a farce, and so forth. It is superficial, profound, entertaining, and boring, according to taste. It is a prophecy, a political warning, a cryptogram, a preposterous movie.

We hope it will provide a source of information and ideas about the novel and the author for both new readers and old aficionados. Similar to Lowry's concept of "The Voyage That Never Ends," we expect the site to be proteanexpanding and contracting, altering its shape and content, and continually exploring the diversity of one of the great novels of the twentieth century. Lowry, Malcolm E Pronunciation Key Lowry, Malcolm (Clarence Malcolm Lowry), , English novelist, b. New Brighton, Wirral. Lowry is widely recognized as an important writer who effectively articulated the spiritual desolation of the individual in the 20th cent. While still a student at Cambridge he wrote his first novel, Ultramarine (1933), later reworked and published in final form in 1962. His reputation is founded on his second novel, Under the Volcano (1947), a subtle and complex study of the dissolution of an Englishman's character. Set in Mexico, the novel is highly autobiographical. Like his hero Geoffrey Firmin, Lowry was an alcoholic whose addiction all but destroyed his family life and caused him to seek peace in such disparate locales as the United States, British Columbia, and Mexico. Lowry's other works, all published posthumously, include Selected Poems (1962); two volumes of short stories

Malcolm Lowry
