THE SILENT BOY

Lois Lowry
From the time I was eight or nine, I wanted to be a writer. Writing was what I liked best in school; it was what I did best in school.
I was a solitary child, born the middle of three, who lived in the world of books and my own imagination. There are some children, and I was this kind of child, who are introverts and love to read who prefer to curl up with a book than to hang out with friends or play at the ball field. Children like that begin to develop a feeling for language and for story. And that was true for me that's how I became a writer.
My books have varied in content and in style. Yet it seems to me that all of them deal, essentially, with the same general theme: the importance of human connections. A Summer to Die , my first book, is a fictionalized retelling of the early death of my sister, and of the effect of such a loss on a family. Number the Stars , set in a different culture and era, tells of the same things: the role that we humans play in the lives of our fellow beings.
The Giver takes place against the background of yet another very different culture and time. Though broader in scope than my earlier books, it nonetheless speaks to the same concern: the vital need for humans to be aware of their interdependence, not only with each other, but with the world and its environment.

Aesthetic teaching allows for literature to be read and experienced as art through the reader's personal transaction with the text which focuses on one's own interest to create and understand the meaning. This paper examines sixth graders' responses to literature as they undergo reader response theory in the language arts classroom using "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. The case study takes place over a 3-week period in which the teacher recorded student discussions and kept a journal. Findings indicated that the reading experience must always include an aesthetic reading. However, the complete and thorough study of literature requires a balance between both aesthetic and efferenta balance that begins with the aesthetic and slowly moves, when the students are ready, to the efferent. It's fun to write about Lois Lowry but not as much fun as it is to be with her. She's a witty, clever, interesting woman with lots of facets to her life. She's a great conversationalist, she knits, is an avid and eclectic reader and movie-goer, and besides that, she likes to play bridge and garden. She's an excellent cook and her cookbook collection is enormous and varied. Her home is full of bookshelves which, of course, are full of books and, since she has a great need for order, her books are carefully arranged with her own rather eccentric system with no apologies to Dewey. As a child whose father was in the military, she moved around a lot and spent the years of World War II with her mother's parents in central Pennsylvania before joining her father in post war Japan. You can find out more about that house and town in Pennsylvania for she used it as the setting for
